  1. I posted here a few weeks about not being able to get my system POST after a few months of not using it and two or three moves. I’ve stripped the issue down to either the motherboard or the CPU, and recently I decided to take a look at the CPU to see if I could see anything out of place such as bent pins. When I removed the heatsink the CPU came with it, stuck to the bottom of the heatsink with thermal paste. The socket’s locking mechanism was down, so it seems to me that the CPU shouldn’t have been able to move. I couldn’t see any bent pins on the CPU or anything else of note on the socket. I did note that upon reinstalling the CPU it would not budge. Note that the system still does not boot after reinstalling the CPU. Check my profile if you’re interested in seeing the other post. I’ve been in touch with ASUS and Amazon and they’ve arranged a full refund (for some reason the Amazon seller won’t do an RMA, but agreed to refund me the whole amount) but I’m curious what you guys think might have happened here. Currently I’m not convinced that it’s the motherboard which is defective. I’ve ordered the same one, so I will install the cpu into that when it arrives and see if the issue is fixed.
  2. I have a 2018 Macbook Pro and an iPhone 14 Pro, my partner has a windows laptop and a Pixel 5a. Ever since we moved to our current house I've been having loads of issues with the internet connection. Speeds would alternate between 1-20Mbps regularly, often slowing down to a complete stop. My partner's devices have never had any issues. If you've had some experience similar to this, here's what I did to solve it. iPhone: Reset network settings. Mac: Update to latest version of MacOS. I don't know what was happening, it seemed to be mostly remedied when I booted in safe mode, but will still happen from time to time. I also followed this Apple support page on recommended router settings, and changed the channel to a less congested one after using NetSpot (free wifi analyser) to see which bands were most congested. Obviously this is far from comprehensive but I'm writing this for the person who is having this issue and can't find any other support links online, in the hopes that it might help you.
  3. I'm having issues getting my PC to post after not using it for a while. It's been the better part of a year and 2-3 moves since I last turned it on. When I went to turn it on over christmas, it wouldn't turn on. I've tried a lot of troubleshooting steps but the behaviour hasn't changed: When I connect my PC to power, the decorative RGB LEDs (not troubleshooting ones) light up but it doesn't respond to the power button on my case or to shorting out the pwr or reset pins on the motherboard. Here's what I've tried: I've cleared the CMOS RTC RAM data and replaced the battery. I've taken the motherboard out of my system and onto a cardboard box, leaving only the CPU, its fan+heatsink, one stick of ram (in the correct slot according to the manual), and the PSU connected. I've tried to use my NAS' PSU to power the X570. I've successfully used my main PC's PSU to power my NAS (confirming that both PSUs are in working condition). I've reseated the 24 and 8-pin connectors from both PSUs. I've reseated the RAM. I've tried different plug sockets and different IEC cables. I've also followed the "No POST" forums here and on TomsHardware entirely Despite all of this, I can still only get the RGB LEDs to light up and cannot get the system to do anything else. No fans spin up, no output to any display (I've connected to a monitor via onboard graphics while shorting the pwr pins to check this). To clarify about the LEDs, my motherboard has two sets of LEDS: 1) QLEDs - ASUS' name for diagnostic LEDs and 2) decorative RGB LEDs. The diagnostic LEDs do not light up, only the decorative ones do. The only thing I've thought of but haven't done yet is to look at the CPU because I'm hesitant to handle it if not necessary. My specs are: ASUS X570 Plus (wifi) Ryzen 9 3950x Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W (main PSU) Be Quiet! Pure Power 10 400W (PSU from my NAS) I've contacted ASUS about this but haven't received a reply yet.
  4. Did you replace the ribbon cable? I think that the screen connector is the issue and so am looking to replace that, but I'm not entirely confident I know what to look for. Do you know if a 30-pin lcd connector cable is what I should be looking for? It seems to be correct for the replacement panels I have found online but I'm not sure if I should be looking for anything more detailed/specific.
  5. A friend of mine has given me their laptop in the hope that I might be able to recover it from what they called a "white screen of death". The issue seems to be with the screen, as when it turns on there is nothing but white and the image changes if I rotate the screen back and forth on its hinges. I imagine it has something to do with the screen connector. The laptop is a Lenovo G50-46 (80E3). I've never seen it while it was functioning, so I'm unsure of the operating system but I don't think that should be of concern for this issue anyway, as it seems to be a hardware fault. In my googling, I found this forum page which asks for help (on a similar, but different model) on blind-booting the laptop on an external monitor. Following the steps detailed here, I didn't manage to get any different results. TL;DR: The Issue: Upon booting the laptop, the screen is fully white. Earlier, when I first booted it, I could see a faint image of the Lenovo logo and the Windows 8/10 loading dots, however, now I can't see even this. What I've tried: - Played around with the screen, moving back and forth on hinges: changes the image slightly; the placement of white and black bars, suggests it is a hardware fault. - Connected to a basic 1080p monitor via HDMI and booted; no luck, same result as before, laptop screen is white, external monitor doesn't detect a signal. - Following instructions from here (for slightly different model) to change bios options to boot from the external monitor; no luck either. In summary, what I'd ideally like to do is change the bios settings so I can boot from an external monitor but as I can't see the bios menu, I don't know how to. If there is anyone on here with the same laptop, I would be infinitely grateful if they could walk me through the exact steps required to change the boot order.
  6. So I wanted to build a NAS for my dorm room as I have lots of movies/tv show files on my laptop, but it's getting very full and I don't want to carry them all around with me wherever I go. I decided a NAS would be the answer as I could stream the files when home, and I can use plex to stream them if I'm not at home. Below is my parts list for the NAS, it excludes a 16gb flash drive which I'm thinking of using for freenas, unless you can suggest a better way of installing/running FreeNAS. Are these parts appropriate for a NAS? 7. No, I'm using two KRK 5's, which are powered speakers connected to the desktop through my soundcard via RCA cables. http://www.krksys.com/krk-studio-monitor-speakers/rokit/rokit-5.html
  8. I'm already using an external sound card. I use the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which plugs into my desktop by usb and to the speakers via RCA cables. Could it have something to do with the sockets I'm plugging the desktop into? I've got the main PC power coming from an extensions cable plugged into the wall, but it also has another extension coming out of it. The speakers are plugged into a completely separate extensions cable connected to a different wall socket. If need be I could plug the third extension I'm using into another separate wall socket? Would that help? Otherwise, if it's do with the physical distance between the soundcard and the gpu (which I don't think makes much sense) then I could move the sound card away from the desktop? But even that wouldn't be very far. Or I could plug the soundcard into a different usb? I currently have it plugged into the top usb in the front of my case, but I could try plugging it into a rear usb or even from my powered usb hub? Do you think any of this might work?
  9. Just a little update for anyone interested: I was testing out the buzzing after reinstalling drivers and I noticed that the loudness of the buzzing is dependent on the intensity of the gpu calculation. Basically, I was playing GTA V and the noise would get louder when there was more to render and quieter when there was less. I don't know if this helps but I guess it narrows down the issue to the graphics card? Here are my specs: Asus Z170 Pre Motherboard Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980 Windforce 16gb RAM Windows 10 64bit I7 6770k Latest drivers for everything. Thanks again.
  10. So I have my setup with my desktop and two krk 5's. The sound is usually great, like when I'm on my browser or listening to music. But whenever I play any games, I get this low buzzing noise from the speakers. It even goes away if I tab out. I've tried updating my GPU and Audio drivers and that didn't help. I thought it might be a problem with the power arrangement, where I previous had 3 extensions running off one socket (I know bad idea). But now I've changed it and the desktop and speakers recieve power from different extensions that are powered from different sockets. It might also be useful to mention that when I turn off v-sync in games, the noise is reduced significantly, but still not completely gone. So basically I have no idea why this is happening so I thought I would ask here. Thanks for any help.
  11. I checked out the 27UD88-W and it is way out of my price range. I was thinking of something roughly half of that price. Just so you know, I don't need any fancy features like Freesync. I would be happy with any monitor that has an HDMI input, thin bezels and 1440p/4K/21:9.
  12. While I don't have a specific cut-point, I don't want to spend £500/$650 pounds on a monitor. Ideally it would be around £200/$260 maximum.
  13. So I've just upgraded most of my PC and I've gone for a much cleaner, minimal overall look with the system. The problem I have no is that I don't know what monitor to choose. I love the bezels on the Dell XPS 15 and I've always had a thing for making things as minimal as possible. What I'm hoping is that you guys can recommend a few monitors that have very thin bezels and ideally are a higher resolution than a standard 1080p monitor. I would be happy with a 1440p, 4k or an ultrawide if it's bezels are thin enough. For reference here are my current specs after the upgrade; Case: NZXT S340 Keyboard: Ducky One White LED Mouse: Razer Mamba TE Wireless Water Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 (The following don't affect the way the system looks but I thought I'd include them anyway) CPU: i7 6700K GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980 Motherboard: Asus Z170 Premium Storage: 2x240GB SSD + 1TB HDD + 3TB HDD I hope that's enough info, but please ask if I've left anything out.
  14. I think you may have misunderstood me slightly. My starting point is that I want an i7 6700K CPU. I have decided that I want to build the rest of my case around that CPU. So my question was that should I stick with X99, or are there any other better/compatible motherboards out there that I should be looking at? I just want to de-profile my setup. I want it to attract lots of attention, it should be classy and quiet. So for this I want to switch to a smaller case because that way I'm not wasting all that space. I was just wondering, maybe there are some particular motherboards that you could recommend and they would have features suited to the type of work I want to do on them. Thanks again for the answer.
  15. TLDR; I'm upgrading my CPU, Motherboard and Case. I'm thinking about an i7 6700K but I'm not set on it yet. I don't know how to chose a motherboard but I might continue with the Asus X99 series, however, I do need help picking one out from the series. And finally, I would like to change cases to one that's a little smaller. I currently have a Define R5 which I need to fit my Gigabyte G1 980 at 296mm long, so the new case must be able to fit the card. (I've copied this to the bottom of the text also). I'm looking at upgrading my computer soon and I want to change my CPU, Motherboard and Case. I just watched Linus' CPU guide that came out 2 days ago and I've chosen the i7 6700K, although I do need a CPU cooler. My main issue is the motherboard. I know essentially nothing about motherboards but I've been using an X99 for around 4 years and I haven't had any issue so I'm thinking of continuing on with the series. The problem is don't know how to choose a motherboard from the series so I'm hoping someone here can help me out with it. Also I want to change my case to something a little smaller and more low profile. I currently have a Fractal Design Define R5 case. It's very low profile but it's also really big and I just don't think I need that much space. I also want to transition from gaming oriented to more of a workstation vibe with the entire station. That's why I'm switching from an ROG PG279Q 144Hz gaming monitor to one of LG's ultrawides, but that's beside the point. So I'm looking for a smaller case that can still fit a full ATX motherboard and a rather big GPU. The last point is very important as I have a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980 which is very long (L=296mm). So to conclude; I'm upgrading my CPU, Motherboard and Case. Thanks to everyone that helps out. Just so you know, I live in London so I'll be responding to comments according to GMT time, which is 8 hours ahead of West Coast time and 5 hours ahead of East Coast time.
