  1. Hello, I would like to hear your suggestions/opinions how to go best about my requirements for my gear. This could end up as a very long rant, I will divide it into BACKGROUND and ISSUES/SOLUTIONS categories. BACKGROUND So back in 2015 I bought my (what turned out to be a project) PC. CPU: Intel 6600K paired with Asus Z170-P GPU: ASUS 960GTX STRIX (4Gb) RAM: HyperX 2x4GB (low end should be 2133Mhz, upgrade might be in near future) STORAGE: NVME SSD for that matter + HDD vault. Case, CPU coller, PSU and everything else generic. While choosing the components one of the store employees asked me if I am going to overclock. I did not have the confidence to assemble everything by myself so not ready to do any OC. Then got a comment that I should go with B or H motherboard and nonK processor. Well I did not give in to that. Two years later I am ready to overclock the heck out of this thing. Ordered nice CoolerMaster case, a couple of bequiet! fans, as well as beefy CPU cooler and 80+ bronze certified PSU. Managed to sync all CPU cores to sustain 4600MHz boost and got around 20 % better results from that old GTX960. The graphics card was a hard decision at the time, but decided on this one and upgrade later. For a while I was targeting used 1080ti (preferably EVGA FTW3) for less than 400euros - never happened. To make it simple I bought 2070 Super last week. Last year I had to change my monitor and decided that 1080p is just right for me and 60Hz is ok. (Going higher i would need some better components). Basically I capped myself by a monitor not to go and spend thousands on new computer components. Now you would say 2070 Super + 6600k + 1080p60fps? Why waste money?! Couple of reasons: I don't buy components frequently and I like them to last, 2070 should not be maxed out for a few years (I hope!). Anything higher than 1080p or 60fps I call vanity, no competitive online stuff for me. (I have a 90Hz phone, my eyes can't pick up the difference compared to 60Hz.) I've played with some benchmarking, CPU is a definite bottleneck at this resolution. So i was quite happy with a smooth gameplay with Vsync enabled. That meant that CPU goes about at 60-80% utilization and GPU is less than 50%. Quite a nice overhead for those upcoming new titles. ISSUES/SOLUTIONS I would like to keep CPU and GPU on lowest loads as possible while maxing out the graphics. I will give some examples from GTA V benchmarking since I am most familiar with it and it can point out the different bottlenecks of the system. (VINEWOOD scene shows GPU bottleneck if draw distance is maxed out, Bridge where jet flies under usually points out GPU bottleneck for quality and City drive is CPU bound.) So Vsync in my case is a bliss capped at 60fps gives buttery smooth experience GPU and CPU trade blows in different scenes but neither goes over 80 % at any point of time. If I disable Vsync the 1 % fps lows worsens and I can see stutters from time to time, CPU is at 100 % and chokes on explosions and whatnot. I've heard about different types of sync (G or free is not an option for me). But Fast-sync would be nice to get those inputs will low latency. But then my CPU would be a toast most of the time. Here are the solutions that I am looking into, give your own, criticize or vote on one of them: 1. No Vsync - possible tearing, low input latency, but CPU is a toast. 2. Vsync ON - No tearing, relatively high input latency, but CPU and GPU are chillin'. 3. FastSync ON - No tearing, low latency, CPU is a toast. 4. FastSync + RTSS cap 120 - No tearing, low latency, sometimes CPU is a toast. 5. FastSync + RTSS cap around 60 - No tearing, low latency, everything chillin'.
  2. Hey, Linus I am a new subscriber to your channel on youtube including "LinusTechTips" and "TechQuickie" i enjoyed your content so much. I would have some comments on that "whole room water cooling" given, that i am Molecular Biologist going into Bioinformatics. So my idea for this christmas is to present my fiance a Shit stack (Schiit Stack) The name is fabulous. Recently i bought her ATH-M20x (Audio-Technika) headphones and she found her music all over again. Given she was going through some rough paches in her life recently i was very happy to give her a gift of music. My idea is to amplify her experience of her favourite music with one, and only - Schiit Stack.
