Secure boot basically just checks whether your boot loader is signed with a cryptographic key. If it isn't, then it refuses to boot.

i'm gonna look past all that is software specific because i dont know what the sotfware is or what it does..

but your error message when starting the service, is because the service doesnt exist.
'doesnt exist' here means the service file isnt where it needs to be, it has a typo in the name, or you made a typo in the command.

mrchow19910319 reacted to powertoys in intel's 12th gen i7 VS amd 6000 series
It's difficult to say without knowing the 2 laptops in question. Two laptops with the exact same CPU can have wildly different performances, the main reasons behind that being the cooling solution of the laptop + how much the laptop manufacturer allows the CPU to unleash it's power.

mrchow19910319 reacted to Darkseth in intel's 12th gen i7 VS amd 6000 series
Those missing 2 Cores can be countered by the 8 E-Cores.
4 E-Cores take the same space away as 1 P Core, but have more Multicore Performance.
So even Multicore will be higher. But all those Cores need Power, that's why 12th gen scales great with more than 45w TDP in terms of how much Multicore Performance comes out.

Also, Single Core Performance is faster.

But for all that we're talking about Benchmark numbers.
You should ask yourself, how much that matters? You'd be surprised how similar 2 Computers can feel in usage, when their benchmark numbers are so vastly different.
Ryzen 6800H and 12700H, you won't feel a difference. You can measure it when you stop time for rendering, or look at pure Benchmark Numbers.
But blind you probably won't be able to guess whihc CPU is inside.
Those few % more or less Performance don't matter much. Both are the newest and among the best x86 CPUs that exist right now. Both of them are monsters, especially the Intel one, if you allow it do drain 100+ Watt.
If those 2 aren't fast enough for your workflow, No Laptop on the Market will be.
If that's not enough, you have to wait a few years for next gen CPUs.

VM: Depends on what you do within those VMs?
My old 4-Core i7 6700k can also run 4 or 5 Linux VMs and navigate through the OS, test Desktops etc, zero issues. Even if i only 4 Cores for each VM. My 32gb Ram will run out before the CPU does. Even if i update the whole System in 5 different VMs, no issues.
But if you use heavy Multicore Applications, it will be different.

The Question here is NOT, if CPU x is enough for VMs. Thgge Question is: Do you need every single % Performance for what you do, and are willing to sacrafice Efficiency?
Or are you fine with 10% less benchmark numbers for better heat and battery life?

mrchow19910319 reacted to Darkseth in M2 macbook pro VS M2 macbook air VS M1 macbook pro 14 inch which one to choose for longevity as well as future proofing ?
I'll make it short: 24gb M2 models are useless. Nobody needs them.

If you don't need much performance or Specs, you can get the M2 base models, or maybe MAX 16gb Ram. Or better, M1 models, not much slower, a bit more efficient, cheaper, do the job just well, since you don't need performance.

If you need performance, and you need 512/16gb Configuration, you're already at the Price of the better 14" Pro. Take the 14" Pro, it's the better Device.

Since you want longevity and futureproofing as best as possible, you get the 14" Pro. You want the Mini LED Display, the better Speakers, higher performance, HDMI Out.

M2 MacBook Pro is a computer for almost nobody, so I wouldn't consider that one.

M2 Pro/Max 14" macbook pro's are probably coming out this month-- so if you're going 14", probably makes sense to wait (even if it's just to get the M1 14" cheaper).

IMO you need to decide if you care more about the better screen/speakers of the 14" or the smaller size/weight of the Air. Or, if the speed difference matters to you.

mrchow19910319 reacted to Sorenson in M2 macbook pro VS M2 macbook air VS M1 macbook pro 14 inch which one to choose for longevity as well as future proofing ?
I have the M2 MacBook Pro and my mom has the M2 Air, both are great. The M2 Air is better screen/speakers if you aren’t going to constantly use it for heavy video editing (not that the M2 Air can’t be used for video editing). You’re fine with the MBA on any storage, but the 256gb is slower then the 512/1tb models. I wouldn’t go with the MBP 14 unless you’re a power user since it is a lot bulkier and most people won’t need the power.

The only reason I didn’t go with the M2 Air is my mom got the MW MBP through work rewards points. She wanted the Air so I ended up grabbing her the Air and taking the MBP. With that said, the M2 MBP is an amazing computer.

yes and no , hackintosh is past tense , you can now just install the official version from apple on any PC, using opencore:
you can find a guide for it here: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/
the github for opencore is here : https://github.com/acidanthera/OpenCorePkg
you will also need gibMacOS from github (this is needed to download the official ISO/DMG/Recoveries from the apple servers)

    wil result in :

depending on the hardware you have you will also need different kext files ,(kext files are macOSX drivers) , but for the details on that check the first link in the post
ofc since there was never an osX version  that was build for AMD , results on intel cpu's and chipsets seem to be better

mrchow19910319 reacted to Herr.Hoefkens in macOS virtual machine running under GNU/Linux system?
this is actually pretty easy (with vmware)
you need 3 things(and vmware ofc):
    -vmware unlocker
    -a macos recovery vmdk
-the vmware tools for macos iso
the first one   you can find here: paolo-projects/unlocker (use the lnx-...sh files to install)
the second one you can find here :
High_Sierra_10.13.vmdk(mediafire) Big Sur 11.1.vmdk (mega.nz) this wil get you a working vm, but a really slow and unworkable one... so you also need the vmwaretools-darwin iso to install on the vm.
depending on your disto they might be availeble in the package manager (on gentoo they are):

or you can also download them from here: /com.vmware.fusion.tools.darwin.zip.tar
or for the other ones: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/fusion/11.1.0/13668589/packages/

    as a personal note:
I userd the High sierra one because i intended to install it later to bare metal using opencore (OpenCore.git)
and since i have a Nvidia GfxCard in my system and High Sierra is the latest verion of macos that has nvidia drivers for it ...
other than that there is no good reason not to install the latest: Big Sur i think

There's something called Sosumi that creates a macOS VM through QEMU very easily. Haven't tried it for actual productivity, just as a test and only for a short while, so I can't talk about its stability.
Number of cores and amount of RAM dedicated to the VM would affect how fast/well it runs, naturally. I had it running on an HDD only, so I don't know how much of a difference an SSD would make.

I have a slightly older model, Moto G7+, not sure if it is available in the old phone market there. Motorola is the new Nokia for build quality. I've beaten and abused this phone and the sum total for damage is a few microscratches on the screen. Recently got someone to switch from an older iPhone and they dropped it on its face and thought they broke it only to pick it up and see a little bit of dust on the screen.

No, you also have other phones from xiaomi like the poco x3 pro for example, I recently bought one and am loving it, even with heavy usage I'm getting around 1.5-2 days battery life from it, plus it's 33W charging too, so if you're getting low you can pop it on charge for 30 mins to top up the battery again. Cost me £169 for the 6/128 option, typically 1-2 weeks later (now), went on sale the 8/256 model came down to around that price 😞
