  1. My older brother told me his power source died. He took his PC, which we built together about a year ago, into some shop (I don't know where) and they tested his power source, told him it was dead and sold him a new one. We put the new on in and it didn't work. I even went as far as to pull the power source out of a working computer and put that in. Still nothing. The fans in the power source don't even turn on. I'm sure we are going to have to buy new parts at this point, but how bad is it? I would think the motherboard is shot. Is there any chance under the sun the CPU is still okay? Here are his parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qYmCJV Also, he bought a retail version of Windows 10 as opposed to an OEM key. Will he be able to reinstall that if he replaces the motherboard? Thanks
  2. One blanket solution I could provide with this little information available: Reset the CMOS. If there is a CR32 battery, take it out for 10 minutes and put it back in. Also consult your MOBO manual for CMOS reset. There may be a jumper you have to move and move right back.
  3. I have a few PCs builds under my belt now and I have become 'that guy in the family you go to'. My question is this. If I were to build a PC strictly for the purposes of selling it off, where could I go about listing it to sell it? Thanks.
  4. Wouldn't that rely more on the GPU? I think the determining factor would be how much video rendering and editing he would do.
  5. I hope everyone is having a great Friday morning. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Have a good time tonight and stay safe!
  6. On-top-of-desk master race. No room underneath. I have peddles from a racing wheel kit stashed under there as it is.
  7. I have a colleague who would like to build his first PC. Any design suggestions? 1500-1700 budget for just the tower made for 4k gaming I built a 500 budget AMD rig so I'm not the best authority on the subject. Thanks!
  8. I'm building an air cooled PC in a Micro-ATX case. Can someone recommend me a CPU cooler that won't interfear with my RAM slots that will fit in an ATX case?
  9. I had zero issues getting Steam to run on linux. Its looking more like OP is going to run into compatability issues. The particular games he noted, Battlefield, GTA, do not run on Linux and are not supported by Wine. so for those, its Windows or nothing.
  10. Go with windows. Those particualar titles are not available on linux. But for the love of goodness, reasearch getting an OEM key. You can get windows MUCH cheaper than the retail price. I got Windows 7 for 20 bucks. works great for gaming.
  11. Ahh yeah that makes sence. I went with a native Linux Steam install, then installed Wine along side it later on. So I had two compleat seperate versions of Steam when all was said and done.
  12. hmm. So you think the price will increase until DDR3 is gone all together?
  13. Sorry for the double post, Can you explain exactly what trouble you had? When I did Linux Mint, I just nabbed Steam from the repository, then when I logged in, Steam auto-updated and it was fine. I was up and running in about 5 minutes. Just curious.
  14. I started with Linux Mint Cinnimon and installed windows 7 about 6 months down the road. It really depends on what you play. If I was still in my CS:GO phase, I could have stayed on Linux exclusivly and it would have been fine. I only felt the need to switch to open up the backlog in my Steam collection.
  15. I finished my normal rig last year and got 8gb of DDR3 ram for about 40 bucks (total probobly like 44 or so). I'm collecting parts for a secondary rig and RAM prices seem to have gone through the roof!! This is a screenshot of the same ram cards I bought last year from PC parts picker. Will the prices go back down again? How long should I wait?
  16. I am currently using Microsoft Movie Maker and I am starting to wish I had a few more options. What is the defacto free editor that isn't Microsoft Movie Maker? I honestly wouldn't mind paying some for decent editing software, but Sony Vegas is too much money. I used to use Corel Video Studio Pro (Which is about 50 bucks) but one day it inexplicably just stopped working and I could never get it to open again. What do you all use to edit videos? Thanks
  17. Whoooooa man you aren't kidding. I just got finished reading the Arch Linux forum rules. they have a whole article on something they call "help vampires" which is basically their framework for banning people who ask simple questions. It also states a clear bias against males in particular for some reason, and this is posted by a long time forum moderator on their official forums rules! I work at a help desk professionally. This whole attitude just blows my mind. You also can't sign up unless you place a string of code in the terminal and give them back the result. (Presumably this is to make the forums exclusive to Arch users.) Every single person I have talked with who is even slightly interested in Linux has been unbelievably friendly. This is such a shock to me that it would be this hostile.
  18. I was able to find an overall linux community forum like this one on google but it's deader than a door nail. What Linux related forums are worth hanging out at other than this one?
  19. Trying to get a Canadian cpu. everything else is otherwuse us and appropriately comparable
  20. US builder here. is there any reason I should not buy a CPU from a Canadian builder?
  21. Really think so? This is going to be a Linux machine, very likely LXDE or XFCE or one of the super light distros. On top of that I already posses a mechanical HD to work for storage space. I'm most worried about adequate cooling in an m-atx case
  22. It's the fan. Take a look at this: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/t4fp99/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr910htx3g1 That's the cooler my 1st pc uses. Heat sink clears just fine, but the fan sticks out.
