Update: Alright, so I was able to get the temps back down to 83 Degrees. I am waiting on my MSi GTX 1070 to arrive and will be running tests once again. My card was sitting at 98 degrees and still working at full speed so.. just short of a kettle.

That's up to you to decide. The most popular choice is Folding@Home, which is also the easiest one to setup, even though I don't like for a number reasons.
 
Second option would be one of BOINC's many subprojects. Personally, I (and a certain fish avatar dude I know) vouch for Primegrid. There are others, but I don't really have experience with them so I won't recommend any. But ofc, you are free to join anything else that you feel it's worth supporting.
Don't sweat about it. GPUs can take a beating. My 970 has been crunching pretty much 24/7 these past 2 years, save for when I'm gaming or the PC is down for cleaning and stuff. Now obviously, you don't have to keep it under load full time. But if your only reason to do so was fear of the card blowing up, fear not! It can handle it.

You just put it in the second slot. Ez pz, install the drivers and it'll just work.
Although it would be a waste to have the 1070 idling when you aren't using it, the answer is yes, you can let the 280x crunching alone. It might require a bit of babysitting, though, depending on what exactly you want to crunch.

The amount of raw power you would need to get any money back is ridiculous. Even with all the power efficiency you wouldn't make much off a GPU, Trust me I have run the math a thousand times.

Remove the case dust filter to allow for more airflow.

A R9 280x can reach 98 with any case... There is nothing to worry about... If you want, you can change the thermal compound to get better temps (preferably use Arctic MX-4)

Fullscreen will be smoother and perform better. Not to mention the few problems you will have with windowed mode. 
 
pls pls pls don't play a game in windowed mode unless its a strategy game pls pls pls

I'd say this one is the best. Ofc you can prefer something else for the looks, but as far as OCing goes, this one should give you the best results with it's 11phase VRM (unless I counted wrong).

However the following applies to most games.
exercise & sleep are really important. Make sure to go for runs, maybe few push ups and general work. Sleeping is probably a big key factor over looked. If you get a good night sleep. You will generally have the stamina and power to get through the day correctly. (Going to bed at 2AM is not good for you). Practice. Dedicate around 2 hours to learn new things. Spend time setting up proper screen resolutions. Mastering the keyboard and mouse movement. Biggest mistake most (i want to go pro) people make. Is simply not applying what they have learned. You will forget it easily unless you actually use it. Energy consumption. I have done multiple tests and generally. High energy = faster reactions and increases the Adrenalin pump you get. (dont overdose on monster energy please). Make sure to take breaks. Play for around 3 hours max. Then take a break. Without it. You will get to use to the screen and generally become weary.  Play vs or with. People who are generally better than you. You will learn to keep up with them. If not, then. Back to the practice steps. Again if you are talking about an FPS title i can be more specific. (If csgo i can be very specific)
