  1. I don't really have any problems that I really know of that would be fixed by this. I've just it would maybe speed up the machine. I've also heard Luke talk about how he recently reformatted his hard drive and he made it sound like it helped him a lot. I don't know just looking into the idea, but from what you're saying it doesn't sound like its really worth it.
  2. New to the idea of reformatting a hard drive but I've heard it is a pretty good idea so I think I will do it. My plan is as follows: I have a 3TB HDD and a 500GB SSD that I boot from. My plan is to move all of my "valuable" files like photos and important documents into a folder that I can just put on an external drive. I plan to take screenshots of how my folders are laid out so that I can put them back together in generally the same organizational structure Once I move all the important documents or get copies on an external drive I'll reformat the HDD and SSD so they have nothing on it I plan to re-install windows on my computer. And here is the 2 part question 1: Can I re-use a windows key, like I used the key and disc 4 years ago when I built the computer and then can I use that same key to re-install windows. 2: The key I bought at the time was Windows 8.1OEM, but I currently use windows 10 which I got from that free upgrade thing, and I'd like to keep it that way, so is there any way I can get the windows 8.1 installation to convert to Windows 10 again? Let's just say that works, then I move all my files back from the external drive onto their respective drives and re-install games and other stuff. Wrap up: Is reformatting really worth it, I've heard it is good to do every once in a while but is it a good idea for the regular user? Is there a better way to do it, I've seen ways online of doing a windows factory reset but isn't half the point of reformatting to make sure you get a fresh version of windows w/out any chance of there being a virus in the OS Is there any way to turn my 8.1 OEM OS CD into a Windows 10 OS Can I re-use the key from the 8.1 OEM if the above works
  3. I was looking through my router's settings when I saw the traffic analyzer option. I decided to turn it on to see what it did. I left for about 15-20 minutes I came back and saw that something called HTTP Protocol over TLS SSL had already used almost 1GB, I don't have a problem with this as I have unlimited internet but I'm just wondering what it is. I can look at some of the other devices on the network, specifically, my phone that I watched a youtube video on had data used up for that but the HTTP Protocol over TLS SSL bar only had used 4.76 MB in the same amount of time. I'm just wondering what that could be. List of what I have open at the time of writing this: Skype 4 chrome tabs looking up what this problem is tab with Gmail tab with google drive tab with google calendar tab with twitch(there is a separate bar for twitch so I know it isn't this and the screen I'm on isn't streaming anything so highly unlikely this is it). 4. I own a Corsair Void Black Wireless Headset. The Wireless transmitter Corsair decided to use is a USB transmitter that is similar to a flash drive. The problem with it is that because it is similar to a USB flash drive it has to stay in the back of the computer.(I haven't tried front but it wouldn't make a difference because of the orientation I have my computer and I can't orient differently because I can't, trust me) Don't get me wrong that it works great when I'm sitting at my desk and tbh it actually works pretty well throughout the house but I'd like to be able to use my headset anywhere. So my plan is to buy a USB extender and just plug the transmitter of that while I run that cable out to a better location in my house. My question is, is there any technical reason that it wouldn't work or is there a certain type of USB Cable I should get. I was looking at this one on amazon and it looked pretty good but the second review down says that if you try to use it to connect devices to your PC(not as a charger) don't buy it because they won't work properly. What kind of cable should I be searching for if there is even any that is available that would work as an extension? 5. Thanks for the responses, from what I'm hearing you guys say is it is pretty hard to do and it would just be easier to put a "mini" station in my room. I just thought it would be a cool thing to have on my PC but it sounds like it is a lot of work for some silly little notification to pop-up in the corner of my screen Thanks for the super detailed response @Daniel644and I don't know why I don't want a station in my room... as to why I even still have a land-line is because I'm a senior in high school so I haven't moved out yet. Thanks for all the responses though
  6. My situation is this, the room that I use my computer in is 1/2 way across the house to where the home "station" for where my landline is and it takes me a long time to get there. The problem is that by the time I hear the phone begin to ring it takes me 15-20 seconds to get out of my room and into the room with the "station" in it so I can see who is calling. I don't want just another like mini station, what I am looking for is a little dongle or program I can install that will somehow sync with my landline and be able to patch through to my computer a notification of who is calling/ their caller ID so I know if it is even worth me going out and getting the phone because 60% of the time it is a telemarketer. The next step that would be really cool would be to have it patch through to my computer so I could actually pick up the call if I wanted but I don't know how complicated that would be. As for technical stuff, I have access to my router and internet modem(not telephone modem) and I have Charter high speed 60/4 internet and Charter phone as well. If anybody has any ideas that would be great. I've looked into it a little bit and the only thing that I've found that might work is this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BU8O9Y/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0013FFN08&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0C06GRH18SK3A0SM6Y33&tag=tomshardware_forum_vgl-20 but to be honest I don't know if this is what I would need or if what I'm asking for is more than what it would be worth to install. Any insight would be awesome. Thanks LastBubbleMaster
