TheRetiredSlave got a reaction from Coldblackice in What does ring ratio do?
I may be wrong about this, but I believe that ring ratio is the speed of the interconnects between the cores, cache, memory controllers, and some other parts..

As for overclocking, my understanding is this:
-Higher ring clockspeeds decrease stability (especially if Cores and RAM are also clocked high).
-Higher clockspeeds improve performance, but not as much as overclocking the cores.
-Having a Ring speed higher than the Core speed does not improve performance

Basically, a 1:1 Core to Ring ratio is ideal, but can decrease stability. Having the Ring clockspeeds slightly lower than the cores is good enough and should allow you to push the cores farther.

Ultimately, if you're running at 4.3 Ghz Core and 4.3 Ghz Ring, that's good. If lowering the Ring to 3.5 Ghz allows you to push the Cores to 4.5, it will perform better, even though the Ring is slower..

I've explained what's meant by the term "viral video" several times, but she still worries every time my dad goes on youtube (which is every day).

What's the actual clockspeed? (Telling us the offset doesn't really tell us anything, because we don't really know what it was running at before the offset)

(I had a friend who bought a pretty generic laptop).. As he was describing its specs to me (before I saw it), he said that it had two graphics cards. He also went on to say that when him and his dad opened it up, it had room for two more graphics cards, and that he was running really intense games on highest detail settings.. He also tried to impress me by saying that because it was such a high-end laptop with killer specs, it was worth almost $3000..

Of course, he was referring to RAM slots, his laptop had a crappy integrated GPU, and he was running TF2 and L4D2 on automatic settings.. (and there was no way in h*ll that it was worth more than $700)

I love it when people spend insane amounts of money of a gaming laptop, and then they complain that it runs games slowly.. And then you realize that they've been running their games on the Intel integrated GPU instead of the dedicated GPU...

That'd be an interesting change though.. As far as I'm aware, the current and previous K-series chips (on the LGA115x platform) haven't had VT-d while the non-K chips do have it.

TheRetiredSlave got a reaction from Arwanell in 1080p vs 4K?
In theory yes it should. 4K (3840x2160) is exactly twice as many pixels wide and twice as many pixels tall as a 1920x1080 screen. This means that a single pixel of 1080p perfectly corresponds to a square block of 4 pixels on a 4K screen. Because of this, there shouldn't be any of the stretching, smudging, or general fuzziness that you usually get when you run an incorrect resolution on a screen.

If you are set on buying a TV, I'd go 4K if you can afford it. You'll be able to run older and/or lightweight games at super sharp 4K, and you always have the option of rendering newer and heavier games at 1080p on your 4K screen. Go into the game's graphics menu and set the resolution to 1920x1080 fullscreen. Of course it will look smudgier than rendering at 4K, but it'll be the same if you had gotten a 1080p screen anyway.

    That's not a misconception, it's true..
If you're gaming, the GPU is the part that matters the most, but if you're doing editing or other work, having a more powerful CPU does mean that the computer is more powerful.
