I've been wanting an alternative to iOS and Android for a long time. And if this project is a success, we'll finally have an option. And it's an option that gives you full control, as Linux tends to do!

"The internal construction of the Librem 5 is absolutely wild. While smartphones today are mostly a single mainboard with every component integrated into it, the Librem 5 actually has a pair of M.2 slots that house full-size, off-the-shelf LTE and Wi-Fi cards for connectivity, just like what you would find in an old laptop. The M.2 sockets look massive on top of the tiny phone motherboard, but you could probably replace or upgrade the cards if you wanted."

Well, being an open-source project, it's entirely possible another hardware manufacturer could knock something together with higher specs and plop the OS on there, since that work has been done. I'm way more interested in the OS than the hardware.

Agreed, this is a remarkable feat regardless. And agreed, it is not for the average consumer. This first version could be considered a dev kit. I'm tempted to buy it just to support the project. And maybe to have a little piece of history. It could end up being remembered as fondly as the shitty old G1.

It's a first gen product and the first of it's kind. So yes, it's bound to be expensive and a little rough around the edges (although I personally like the chunky modular design). The OS is the real selling point here for people who value privacy. If it becomes popular, the future iterations will be much more polished and feature-rich.

And unfortunately, despite all the efforts by the left to exercise "inclusion", the result is fascist dictatorship. If free speech is only acceptable to you when people agree with you, then you're not in favor of free speech. You have to fight for your opponents right to free speech too.

As long as nothing illegal is being said or promoted, it shouldn't get removed from any platform. When you ban people from a platform in order to protect peoples feelings, you end up down a rabbit hole. There's a girl who had to be protected in her university against sauce on food. SAUCE ON FOOD. SERIOUSLY. I hate to be the guy that says "toughen up", but people like this leave me no choice.

Dissenter allows you to comment on any web page, anywhere, anytime, regardless. So if you think turning off comments on your YouTube video is effective, it's not.

This follows closely behind the WAN Show topic of pedos commenting timestamps on videos of kids. Now, I'm no fan of this practice (understatement of the year), but free speech just got a shot in the arm, for better or worse.

Dissenter is made by Gab.com, which is known for their right-leaning libertarian political stance. However, unlike Twitter, they won't ban you for your political views. They don't care if you offend someone. They just want free speech protected, something other big platforms don't seem too concerned with. Illegal content is not allowed, for obvious reasons, but that's it.

Someone might be a Trump supporter and someone might say they hate Trump, but then they interact and they realize the other person's not that bad."

"Creates echo chamber." By allowing people to have different opinion than on the platform which censors/bans different opinions. Dude, what? Death threats? To whom? Dissenter is a separate layer that doesn't modify or touches the original platform. People between them literally have absolutely no contact. You're the kind of person that keeps spreading bullshit about Gab which then gets banned everywhere because companies like Google and Apple bend over to pressure of butthurt snowflakes in their safe space echo chambers. You're the problem, not Gab or people on it.

People call me all sorts of shit because I don't just believe what people say, I go and check it myself, even if that means listening to fucking Richard Spencer's speech. How can I do that on Twitter or Facebook when they just straight up ban, censor and remove differenting or controversial opinions? That's why I'm on Gab, because I like to hear what people say on the other end too. It's why I'm strong opponent to censorship and coddling of people in their own safe space echo chambers. Ideas and opinions, no matter what they are need to exist and need to be challenged. Censoring words won't magically make actions, behavior or attitude of some people just go away. You don't see them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. And worst of all, they never get challenged as a result. Banning place where they gather is NOT a solution. That's just pure ignorance and it's doing more harm than good. But hey, whatever, go on banning them and just making them more angry and more determined. That'll show them for sure! Where challenging ideas may convince people that their thinking might not be the best way. That doesn't sound too logical to you does it?

These days, when a leftie says Nazi, they really just mean someone more conservative than themselves. The word has lost all meaning. If you ask someone if they're a Nazi, and they say "yes" proudly, then fair enough, it's true. But you have a slew of people today laughing and shaking their heads because they receive that accusation when it's anything but true. And now when I hear "Nazi", I have to think "Oh, here we go again". I'd really rather those waters didn't get so muddy. I don't want to have to question that, but I don't have a choice.
That depends entirely on the maturity of both parties involved. I have plenty of productive conversations with people I don't agree with. I've learned to make a simple ground-rule: no anger allowed.
That's the beauty of it. If someone get's the 3rd degree for being a jerk, maybe they'll start to re-think things a little.
Exactly. If we let this trend continue, certain political views could become outlawed. Then what? 1984?
Yeah, there's extremism on both sides. And they're both nuts in their own special ways.

The trouble is defining hate speech. If you're going to enforce something by law, it has to be rather clearly written. But there's so much subjectivity involved that a judge might let a real jerk off in some situations, and punish someone innocent in another. Currently this system is based on what the victim claims they've felt in terms of offense. But if that victim is really shedding fake tears, and abusing the legal system to attack someone they don't like, that's seriously dangerous.
