  1. Back when I got my N950KP6, i'm still running that Celeron G3930T. Yes, the CPU is pegged at 100% all the time, but for web browsing and writing on the LTT forum it's not bad.

I was thinking more CSS or Half life 2 but those are 2004 one sec

bad company 2 should do okay. it likes core 2 duos or quads.

I actually have the parts for recommended build core 2 quad 4gb with a 9800 GTX+

I'll play some Half like 1 then

    4. CircleTech

@WI-FIultrasnoop with the current events, nothing suprises me anymore. When is the Meteor coming?

  2. Government wise, this is a Genius move by Boris Johnson:

Hong Kong isn't Like Syria or Mexico. Most of the people who live there are College Educated, highly Skilled, and have money. All things that governments want to see coming into their country. Not that there's anything wrong with taking in Refugees from other countries, but lower-skilled immigrants tend to not bring a lot of valuble skills with them. But from Hong Kong, they (statistically) will.

Now if you work in Engineering or Finance in the UK, you're gonna get burned. Expect to see your salary stay flat while the immigration is occuring. The good news is unlike Other Countries taking in Refugees from Syria, Hong Kong has a similar culture of respect for an Individuals private property. I have heard of Syrians moving into places like Sweden and causing massive Crime and unrest in parts of the country because they don't want to conform or behave. Hopefully this won't be as much as a problem.

One thing I wish Donald Trump would do is just go against his immigration policies and allow Visas for say, a Select number of Hong Kongers. Maybe they would have to have a certian kind of education and Net worth, that way nobody "unskilled" could get through while keeping the issued visas low.

Remember, this is a trade war with China, NOT with anyone else. We need to Get More democratic Nations on our side like Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia in the coming Trade war with China vs the US. Don't think it will happen? Think again. The coronavirus has already significantly reduced the American public's view of China. I don't see it getting any better in the coming months:

    1. Techstorm970

Trump is largely considered an unpopular president in the U.S., but so is Xi Jinping in China.  In fact, Jinping is disliked for scarier reasons (e.g. they don't like that he hasn't invaded Taiwan yet).  Well, he hasn't invaded Taiwan because he knows that would start a world war that China wouldn't stand a chance in.

It's kind of a meme when you think about it.  "When your propaganda works too well..."

  3. Couple things I have learned when looking for College Majors. Nobody seems to tell you these things, unless of course you decide to be an idiot and change schools three times like me:

    1. The kind of degree doesn't matter, until it does.

Now, I don't mean you can take an Art History degree and end up as an Investment Banker just because you have a degree. I mean as long as you take a degree in STEM, Health, or a diffucult business degree, you will be fine.

    2. Your degree has exactley zero tie to your future job.

Is it important in the short term? Sure, for that first job. But beyond that, Employers care about skills. They will view what you did recently, and use your Bachelors as a check-box. This is why you can take whatever hard degree you want. However, you need to take a degree which actually has a form of "prestiege" associated with it, which will lead me to my next point.

    3. Your degree will teach you nothing about what you will actially be doing on the job.

My Internship at Rockwell Automation was totally different from what I was expecting: Programming in C++. I hated it. It's why I had to leave early. I never learned any C++ in college, so I wasn't sure why I had to do it now. Then there was the corporate buearucracy, dumb rules, and slow-moving pace of the company. It all added up to something college gave me the complete opposite message about.

Now with all this said, what degree should you choose?

Answer: The hardest degree you think you can take, with the largest salary projections and job growth:

Remember, Even if you get a degree in Mechanical Engineering and hate it, it doesn't mean you will forever be a Mechanical Engineer. You could move into Management, start your own company, Move to India, Join #Vanlife, or do a fuckload of other things completely unrelated to your degree. Your degree just provides a springboard so you can take that corporate salary, and use it to go do something you actually want to do.

In a nutshell, get a good degree, and use that high salary to plan your escape from corporate America. since you don't plan to work there for 40 years, just get something that pays really well. Then move onto something you actually want to do later.

PS: All Jobs at big Corporations suck. Might as well be paid the most to do them.

    1. GDRRiley

I can fully agree degree doesn't tie to a job. my dad spent years working a dryers which he needed a degree for but he got hired off of doing years of frozen yogurt deliver and so he knew the challenges around it. Then sold chocolate. (more food+temp sensitive)

      He has a sociology degree

  4. College update:

This fall, I will be attending Western Michigan University, and am enrolled in Industrial Engineering. I will have one year to decide if I want to change back to Electrical Engineering, the degree I've actually wanted to get since 2017. Let's see if I can pass Physics, Multivariable calculus, Statistics for Engineers, and Technical Writing.

Six years to get a Bachelors degree. If you're gonna go to college, take it seriously kids.

    1. BuckGup

      Three comments-

Most people take 4-5 years for an engineering degree so I wouldn't feel bad at all.

There's no shame in going with an easier degree. Engineering is hard as balls. Not impossible but if you can't pass the classes you might not be cut out for it.

Six years is 150% of the time needed so watch out for any loans you have.

    2. Techstorm970

Bottom line, STEM stuff is not easy, and college is one of the best places to get that reality check.

I managed to get an A in my freshman-level Introduction to Meteorological Analysis class.  What does "A" level performance require?  Weekly all-nighters.

I can also confirm that the workload lessens in subsequent meteorology classes, but yeah...

Keep plugging away, @CircleTech!  You'll get there!

    3. ARikozuM

^ And the class style might not fit your VAK style.

  8. Making a race-joke on Twitter probably wasn't the best of moves considering the current events and given it's a public forum where many people will take it out of context. Internet points for handling it well. I would've done much worse.

    1. VenomZ_

lol making a race joke in general isnt a great idea in today's climate even before this situation you're just asking to get cancelled.

    2. GDRRiley

had to go read up. man I hate how twitter organizes stuff.

I don't know that it counts as joke so much as a PSA that mixed race kids is good.

  9. I support #BlackLivesMatter, but I do not support looting and the destruction of property as it proves nothing and damages local communities. Memphis is doing it right:

you back to scrapyarding as well or are they closed atm?

    2. CircleTech

Haven't checked scrapyards recently. I've kind of moved on. I'm designing adapters and circuit boards on CAD that reuse old power supplies and other ewaste. I don't see anyone doing anything like this, so I decided to give it a go.

    3. VenomZ_

that's sad to hear you've moved on completely from the scrapyarding because i still saw a lot of potential in it hell im not even selling close to the volume of pcs i use to sell and still stick to it just because it brings money in. but yeah man that's cool what you're doing now i hope you're successful with your new venture hit me up if you change your mind though because i was looking forward to doing more business considering i live in the middle of nowhere

  12. Today I killed an Arduino Due and Arduino uno. It turns out if you are controlling LEDs with an arduino, you need to have your power supply and signal (that would be the thing coming from the Arduino) turn on simultaneously. If you don’t do that, your serialized LEDs will power on with random RGB colors and smoke will come out of your Arduino for some reason.

The easy way is to power the Arduino and LED array from the same supply. I didn’t do that because this was a one-off thing. Lesson learned.

    1. ARikozuM

I guess you really 😎 gave it the old one-two punch.

    2. CircleTech

Also, I now regret not using analog LEDs for my design. Yes, it would have meant that the LED array could only be all one color (as opposed to an individual color per LED), but it would’ve dramatically simplified the design process.

  13. North America should transition to 240v AC standard in every household for better efficiency and more importantly, so I can pull 4.8Kw through a wall socket to charge my ebike battery.

I don’t see how we see that.  More the reverse as far as I can see.  There has been basically zero infrastructure improvement and a lot of delayed maintenance on what is there.  This whole protest thing seems to stem from an attempt at cost savings where they ended the requirement of law enforcement to live in the area they policed rather than increase salary, and then went with cheaper and much worse paramilitary training for no longer invested officers.   Took years for the fruits of that one to come out but it’s happening.

    3. ARikozuM

Either way, tax the wealthy who use more of the infrastructure and resources to pay for the rest of us. If they leave, we will fill the voids.

He knows that 1/2 of 1 treat is bullshit, since you can't divide a bag of 30 hearts into halves, and then only offer him 1/60 of the actual treats. #CanineEquality

    4. OJTheAviator

Ask it to find how many treats of 1 square inch can fit in a single layer in its dog bowl. Tell it only single layers count, but it can break them up to fill rounded edges. Also, go ahead and give it the formula defining the edges of the bowl. Oh, and it can only eat the treats if it finds the right number. Your dog can now integrate!

The total Bill of Materials will likely come to almost $50.

Now I know why 1200w Car inverters are so expensive. Because the FETs and inductors for the controller add up to 3/4 the cost of the entire inverter. The rest of the control chip and the passives like the resistors, capacitors, and diodes.

  18. PSA for anyone orderign food from Resturants:

If you can, please tr yo to do Takeout. If you buy your food through doordash or Uber eats, they will take a 30% cut of the entire sale of the food and for many Resturants, that could mean they lose money. Place a call and order take out, and come pick it up yourself.

Most services like Paypal, DoorDash, or Amazon make it Easier for the consumer to buy a small businesses product or service, but they cost the small business a ton of money, meaning you as the consumer have to pay more for the same thing. If you are going to buy from a small business, buy from then directly.

    1. Show previous comments  2 more
    2. givingtnt

I mean, saying restaurents take a loss on sales through uber eats and doordash is a bit ridiculous considering it's 100% a choice..
If it wasn't viable, they would ditch it.

Also, Doordash usually takes 20%, but it's been cut down to 10% with what's going on.

    3. ARikozuM

@Techstorm970 And that's another issue that needs addressing. Your mom-pop restaurant should have that luxury (the lower wage offset by tips), but Chile's, Applebee's, etc. should pay min wage like everyone else (and still allow tips).

    4. Den-Fi

Are you trying to tell me a service built around convenience and access to its user base charges fees for access to its service and user base?! Ridiculous.

  20. I was looking at the most profitable movies of all time. The best I found was the Blair witch project with a budget of 60,000 USD and a box office of 248 million.

guess what, I can make a movie with infinite profit. I’ll record a brick wall with my phone for two hours and sell it for $1. Then my profit will be infinite.

    1. Show previous comments  3 more
    2. OJTheAviator

@CircleTech well, your profit is 1 cent

    3. Bombastinator

There’s site called “data is beautiful” that did various most profitable moves of all time.  They included continuing sales though.  Apparently movies keep making money after they close in the theatres.  Iirc Superman and raiders of the lost arc are still on the list because of movie rentals and dvd sales and merch and video downloads and stuff.

data is beautiful stopped putting out videos around February. :/

    4. Spotty

Profit is the difference in what you make vs what it cost.

Blair witch has profit of 247,940,000 according to your figures.

There are movies which have made more profit. Look at Avengers endgame that has close to 3 billion box office and only cost $350 million to make. That's a profit of 2.5 billion, 10 times that of Blair witch.

The only way your profit would be infinite is if you had an infinite number of customers and sold it an infinite number of times.

What you're talking about is which movies have the highest ROI (Return On Investment) which is the ratio between the net profit and cost.

  21. This is why electronics manufacturers do not open-source their designs:

    Real product:

    copied product:

even if you try to protect your IP, the Chinese will come in and reverse engineer your product, then sell a better version for half price. You can try protecting your product by not releasing firmware or the schematic, but people will still find a way.

This is equivalent to piracy because another entity is profiting off of your work. Until China decides to crack down on people like this, I can never see the US ever working closely with China on anything again.

    1. BlueChinchillaEatingDorito

Also why bad CSS should be a crime against humanity:

  22. In my mind, there are only Three types of jobs.

    1. The people who make the things (Engineers and Manufacturers).

    2. The people who sell the things (Salespeople and marketers).

    3. The people who run the show (The manager).

Everyone else is Extra. And no, any job I can think of will fit into the above categories. A worker at Walmart sells the things, but a line cook at Wendy's makes the things. HR at a company runs the show, because they lead both the makers and the sellers.

Try to be as high up as possible in the above categories. That is where you will be paid the most.

    1. givingtnt

      Yes, Fireman are extras.

    2. CircleTech

A fireman is a person who makes the thing because they do the work of putting out the fire.

    3. givingtnt

That's as much of a wording stretch as saying managers create time constraints, and so therefore are also people who make the things.
