Specs: CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 (overclocked) RAM: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 Storage: 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX960 SSC PSU: CX430M This was my first build I've ever done for myself. My laptop was recently lost in a fire and decided to spend some of my share of the insurance money replacing it with a custom-built "gaming" rig. I write "gaming" because I have a strong feeling that most of my "games" weren't designed for mature adults, but I digress. This build went pretty well, aside from me having to re-cable manage everything due to late night frustration and carelessness. I based it on Linus' 'Ultimate Value Gaming Build," with a few modifications to suit me better. Personally, I still own quite a few CDs, mostly music but some software as well. So I added a DVD drive. I also wanted to get a GPU I knew was more than what I needed, because if I was going to spend a nice chunk of money building myself a computer, it sure as hell wasn't going to lag. Other than that, not much else was changed. As I said this is only my second build ever, so it's nothing too crazy. I had a lot of fun building it and the sense of accomplishment was pretty great too. I've included some pictures of the final product. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I hope you all have a great day!

This is what I'm thinking at the moment:http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Begley95/saved/HC3Ycf Ideally don't want to pass the $700 mark.

Her Macbook is on the verge of death, she hates using the thing. Her mother offered to replace it as a Christmas gift but she said she would rather I build her one myself, as neither her or her mother know anything about what to look for

Originally it was for budgeting reasons, but I remembered that I have an extra copy of Windows 7 so I was able to move up to an i5 and stay within our budget lol.
-
Well, our budget isn't HUGE, buuuuuut, I do have an extra copy of Windows lying around so I adjusted the hardware accordingly. What does everyone think of this build? http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Begley95/saved/HC3Ycf

Hi all, I'm in the process of putting together a parts list for my girlfriend, she wants a dedicated photo editing rig to replace her aging Macbook. She is familiar with Windows so no concerns there, basically I'm torn between a dual core and a quad core. Specifically, the Core 2 Duo E7500 and Core 2 Quad Q6600. I have mostly everything else locked in, and either one will be subjected to overclocking. She's going to be using Photoshop mostly. What are your thoughts?

This is the best I could do. Not bad if I do say so myself

Got it up to 3.30 GHz so far with no issues. I'll report back with the final OC. Thanks everyone for your responses!

The CPU cooler is a MassCool 8WT15-38. Nothing fancy. Like I said it's not going to be used for launching the space shuttle or anything, just looking to squeeze a little extra juice out of an older CPU. ThanksQ

Hi all, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to OCs, so I apologize for my ignorance in advance.Long story short, I've just finished building a computer for a friend, and, upon going into the BIOS to check out settings and such, I noticed some overclocking features were unlocked! The CPU is a Core 2 Duo E7500, mobo is a Gigabyte ga-g41mt-s2pt. I didn't end up touching any of those settings yet but I recall at one point I was able to get the CPU up to well over 4 GHz. My questions are, which settings should I be adjusting for a mild overclock, what consequences are there if I take it too far, and how can I confirm that the CPU is running at the new overclocked speed? It's not intended for anything super CPU intensive but it's an older Core 2 Duo and a little extra speed never hurt anyone

What about this? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HMnsTW

Hmmm... I like it! The GPU might be a little overkill for me but I'd much rather have too much than not enough.
-
Awesome, thanks a million! Like I said I really do like that ultimate value build, so I was hoping to base it around that. But any other suggestions are greatly appreciated and I will definitely consider them!

The most demanding title at the moment is The Sims 3, a lot of my other games are older ones I grew up playing that I just can't let go of I only get paid every two weeks so I will be buying parts incrementally but Ideally less than $1,000 USD.

Hi all, After looking at some prebuilt "gaming" PCs online, I've decided to come to my senses and build my own rig. Specifically, I have my eye on Linus' "Ultimate Value Gaming Build," http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/281756-ultimate-value-overclocked-build-guide/. What I'm wondering is, do you all have any advice, recommended changes to the build (possibly quad core?), or anything else you feel I should know for my first real build? I'll take whatever I can get at this point. I'm dealing with a pretty low budget so nothing too crazy Thanks in advance! EDIT: My goal is to run Sims 3 (because Sims 4 is disappointing at best) on full settings @ 1080p with no lag or stuttering. Don't judge me... I already know I need a life
