On my Crucial M4 128GB, I have Windows installed.
On an 80GB HDD, I have Linux Mint 17.3 installed.
You're not limited to one OS per device - I know someone here had 8 at one point.
You can - with a LOT of tinkering - get multiple OS's on one drive, but it's better to just do one OS on one drive.

    Yeah £/$20 sounds muy barato.
My dad thinks he paid that, maybe $25 or so, at a surplus place for this iron (or another one of his that's somewhat similar, but not quite the same) -- in the mid/late 1970s or so.  (He also told me that soldering irons/stations he was looking at could go for upwards of $60-80 or so back then.)

I'm running the Hyper 212 Evo in a Fractal Design Define R5 case, currently with the side panels off for easier access to the internals.
Just did a Cinebench R23 run, and it hit 92°C on the hottest core at stock settings.  From what I've observed, less demanding applications usually only get up into the 60s, maybe 70s °C at stock settings, last I remember.  Also earlier versions of Cinebench, like R15, could run around 70°C or so I think, and could get about 4.7 GHz with little effort or 4.8 GHz by pushing the voltage a bit (and getting higher temps).
(Also it would be better to make this its own topic in either the CPUs or Cooling subforum; also the 4790K is several years old now, you'd probably be better off with a much newer CPU.  I use a Clevo laptop with an i7-6700K for travel use - have it undervolted so under normal use it stays under about 65-70°C or so under load.)

Budget (including currency): $1500USD before tax
    Country: USA
Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Should work for gaming and Creative cloud
Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):
I am building my first PC with a budget of $1500USD and need some help with getting the price down, i'm not sure which part I need to downgrade but I have attached my list for your reference :) I am also not 100% sure if everything is compatible so if you have have any suggestions for what I could change to make this build worth my money that would be awesome!

    Thanks!

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to gjsman in NVIDIA to officially allow GPU passthrough to Windows VM from Linux host
    Summary
Today, NVIDIA announced that they will officially support the ability to have a Windows VM on a Linux host and passthrough a GPU to it. Although this was technically possible earlier, NVIDIA made it very difficult with Error 43 on their consumer hardware, requiring gamers to try preventing NVIDIA's drivers from knowing they were running inside a VM. With this change, running a Linux operating system as your daily driver and having a Windows VM for certain games is now easily possible.

However, NVIDIA can't do anything without a catch. Because this is not SR-IOV, you will need 2 GPUs: 1 for Linux, and 1 being passed through to Windows. Which, considering the GPU shortage, means this is a shallow victory.

    My thoughts
I'm happy, but at the same time, a bit miffed that this isn't SR-IOV with the ability to split a GPU into parts (like you can with CPU cores), so the requirement for 2 GPUs is quite unfortunate.

Turns out that the Coffee Cup Holder is the CD Tray of the CD-ROM... She was using that to hold her coffee while on the computer...

I nerfed the 4790K for this one, to give it the same core / thread counts and clock speeds as the T7250.

I'd like to see someone do a similar comparison - using one of the first dual-socket motherboards ever made, like Pentium (1 / Pro) or Pentium II (Xeon), and a modern Ryzen 5000-series or Intel 10th-gen CPU set to the same core / thread count and clockspeed.

I like to see bigga IPC number, as in, bigga Cinebench score (or other benchmark) at the same clock speed, assuming the same core / thread count. 🙂  (I miss the days when single generations could have like a 100% jump in IPC, like 8086 -> 286, or 486 -> Pentium.  I think there was a sizeable jump involving the 386 as well, too.)

Well calling the Desktop/Tower a CPU came from the Mainframe and Minicomputer Era. Referring to Memory/RAM and Storage Devices as "Primary Storage" and "Secondary Storage" also came from the same point in Time as well.

I am not saying it should release its patents for free or just on the spot... But if they have atleast progressed ahead of a stage, shouldn't they atleast release the patents for the older tech they aren't using.... To my knowledge (Which isn't much), AMD is currently mass producing on 5nm and 7nm, Intel is on 10nm and 14 nm... So I don't think a future where they will revert back to there old process. But I don't think they will even release their patents for even their nm process for even the 20's line nm. Why can't even If somebody can't produce a 24nm processor easily and cheaply than before. Because they didn't have these fab companies didn't have any plans to make them cheaper. It was the next expensive stuff and not try to release the old process. so, anyone else can work on it to make it cheaper. Even if a 24nm processor was only used for toy or safety cameras or anything cheap.

I understand that you want to give the creator it's fair due, but when the tech has already been dumped for something new. Atleast give it for recycling and not burn it or lock it in the ground.

It's just as simple as garbage. Someone's garbage can be other's gold. Reuse, Recycle, Reduce (price 🙂).
