PianoPlayer88Key reacted to kelvinhall05 in why do people buy a separate pc for linux?
I haven't heard of people buying separate PCs. Separate drives maybe, cause dual booting on one drive is somewhat unreliable.

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to CerealExperimentsLain in How exactly does UnRaid save my data
UnRAID stores your files in a plain file system on the main disck.  There are also parity disks that are used to reconstruct data if a storage disk fails.  You can add more than one parity disc.  UnRAID can survive as many storage drive failures as there are parity discs without losing any data.  If you have 1 parity disk, and four storage disks, each 16TB in size, you can store 64TB (4x16) and if one storage disk fails the parity disk will keep you going and you can recover.  If you lose two storage discs, there will be no saving the data on the two disks.  However, as the data is in plain format on the other disks, the remaining two disks that did not fail can still be read.  To have 100% loss of data you will need to lose 100% of your disks.

If you add additional parity disks, you can surive additional storage disk failures.  Have two parity disks?  You can lose 2 storage discs before lost disks become unrecoverable.

Unlike 'RAID' there is no situation where the RAID can 'collapse' and you will lose 100% of your data, every drive remains readable on it's own if it's operational.  You can rip your storage disks out of the machine and read them in another computer just using the XFS file system.

UnRAID allows you to mix and match drives as you want, your parity drive must be at least as large as your largest storage disk.  So 1x16TB parity and 1x16TB storage disk plus 4x1TB disks?  You have 20TB of usable storage.  The storage disks just add up without any 'loss'.

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to spicyinjunjoe in Upgrading old Laptops & Desktops
E-waste is a serious problem. But in poorer Countries without a proper e-waste recycling programme, repairing and upgrading old laptops is a serious line of activity that is also Socially beneficial. Microsoft , AMD, NVIDIA , DELL, SONY, HP & other Laptop manufacturers, all pose serious hurdles to the process. The fact of the matter is that for the ordinary user an upgraded laptop can give years of added service.

Broadly speaking the upgrades fall into some basic categories:

    1. Storage Upgrade: Switching from a failing spinning drive to an SSD is a highly desirable upgrade. The SATA SSD is quite easy to install. Laptops that have a DVD ROM drive bay can also be used to put in a storage drive (even the old one being replaced) in place of the DVD ROM DRIVE.
    2. RAM Upgrade: To this day most Laptops come with just a single stick of RAM. Usually there is scope to put in an additional DIMM and run in Dual Channel mode which gives a significant boost in Speed.
    3. Battery replacement: Older Battery versions are still available.
    4. Keyboard repairs: This is again a very feasible exercise.
    5. OS Upgrade:  Thus far upgrades from Windows 7, & Windows 8, to Windows 10 was permitted by Microsoft. Only with Windows 11 has Microsoft denied an upgrade path for older Hardware. But there was always a problem with the drivers for embedded and older Graphics Cards which became incompatible with Windows 10 often crashing systems!  Often, the best way out was to switch to Linux which was free and could actually run well enough on older Laptops.

You Tubers have played a major role in educating the lay Public into what was possible. With the Pandemic, many School children have been forced to learn from home. Older Laptops can easily be upgraded to suit their needs. Happy to learn of efforts made in this area. Do share your experiences!

Why can't Windows be more like Linux with doing updates. You know like ask for an actual Password for this? And as far as Firmware Updates? that should on be done inside the BIOS/UEFI Setup Menu only.

Considering most 4TB drives are between 85-100 and the cheapest 10TB is $200, extremely unlikely you'll see that pricing within the next decade.

I actually *USE* the capslock key in a game I play.  (wow I guess it might almost be considered a retro game now, as it came out in 1999 .. but I guess i'm showing my age in that I mostly consider games retro if they're from the 1980s or older, I was born in 1981)
Team Fortress Classic (on the GoldSrc engine that Half Life 1 used) ... some servers have a grappling hook mod enabled, I have capslock bound to +hook.  (There's one server that uses a +rope instead that works a bit differently, so when I go to that server I have to rebind the key.)

I thought my GPU was loud on startup (see the video linked above, from google photos) 😮 (Also semi off topic but I'm looking at moving soon, but I'm hoping to find something fully detached so I don't have to worry about noise, piano playing, raging at the top of my lungs in my back yard after being owned in a game at 3am, etc bothering my neigbhbors.)

mine occasionally would start at max speed as soon as you hit the power button, then slowly ramp down to more normal.  idk why that is though...

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to Avocado Diaboli in How many of you have moved on from PC gaming?
I have similar numbers right now, always between 15-20 hours on the last 2 weeks counter. And I consider myself a pretty heavy gamer. But, you know, one with a job and other commitments and interests. Honestly, I feel like those are the number of hours you should have at the very most if you're not unemployed or gaming is your job. I love gaming but I can't understand people who would spend their entire free time playing games so they'd rack up play times that would rival my office hours. I'm not gonna call it unhealthy or something else along those lines, that'd be a baseless claim to make. But you know, variety is the spice of life and I wouldn't feel comfortable coming home from work and playing games until I go to bed only to repeat the cycle the next day.

Wouldn't it be the opposite, as in you probably will get a CnD? They don't check if you have a license, all they see is you pirating a game. The reason for the gray area (as I know it), is because our laws (mine at least) allow you to make or have a copy for home use. That does not mean you are allowed to pirate the game. Movies had/have this same problem. A home-use copy is allowed, breaking the copy encryption not.

WOW DDR5. Hell I remember when SDRAM was current. I got some DDR 1 memory hung on the wall with the motherboard from my first gaming machine.

I dont think DDR5 will matter for most people at the start. It will probably take few years before it gets wide spread penetration. Especially with how the hardware market has been the last year an a half.
