I'm not against reasonably supporting creators.
(I am against supporting them too much, though, for example I won't name names but there are some out there who may only do as little as a few hours of work writing a piece of music, or maybe a thousand or so hours writing software, books, etc, and it turns out to be a huge hit, and due to copyright law, they or their family or whoever they sold the rights to (that's another gripe I have too) are still getting tens or hundreds of millions in royalties even decades later.)

Also while I'm not against some advertising, if it's properly done,
I do not like self-promotion, paid promotion (I prefer independent reviews, anecdotes, recommendations from friends, etc, truth, honesty, don't try to sugarcoat things, tell the bad with the good, etc), and I especially don't like, as the OP mentioned, stealing our bandwidth and data.  (Speaking of which, my preferred max to allow for advertising would basically be like the equivalent of storing the original Commodore 64 boot loader, or Xerox Alto, or Apple I, or some other now-ancient boot software, or one of those boot sector floppy games (the ones that fit entirely in the boot sector), on whatever storage would be the equivalent of Petabyte Project III, Google's, Amazon's, BackBlaze's servers combined, say, 50 years from now.)

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to AdvocateOfNyx in See Views on Post While Post is Open
That's a fair question.  For me, I often post a question and then leave the tab open.  If 100 people see it and nobody responds, I can assume that there probably is not an easy answer.  If only 10 people see it though, I might want to ask it somewhere else and see if it generates more traffic or ask again/bump it in a week or two if the problem continues.

The same logic applies when looking for posts with a similar issue before posting my own.  If I could see that 150 people saw someone's post about it a week or two ago and nobody had an answer, I would know that it isn't something I should expect to get a reply to quickly/at all.  If I see 1000 views or something else very high, I could guess that many other people are having a similar issue, or it was brought up somewhere in tech media.  Currently, when I search for a topic, I can see comment count only and not view count, even before clicking on it so I have absolutely no way of gaging that.

Sometimes this information is easily viewable in comments, but other times there are posts with a decent number of views and no comments.  That's why I think view counts are useful to me personally, although I can't speak for anyone else.

In either case there better be multiple plane loads of the damn things else it's market irrelevant and only useful discussion material for how good, or not, they could be if you could actually get one.

where I live (near San Diego) I've seen fixer uppers for like $500-600K 😮 (well they're semi livable, but need some work; the gutted ones might still be like 300-400K though I think.)  A bit farther north in the same state (California, near San Francisco bay area) I've heard of fixers going for upwards of 7-digit prices.in some places. 😮

if I had $10K I'd probably save / invest most of it.  Might buy a few things that add up to maybe several hundred or a couple K $, but not much more.  Also what I did buy would more likely be several less expensive things, rather than one thing that is the entire amount that I spend, so no RTX 3080s for me.

For example, right now I might need to get a new phone (Pixel 3a has a cracked screen and flaky charging port, looking at anywhere from $100-500 for a phone), and I'd like to get some streaming equipment (mics, maybe an extra camera, also headphones / headset, thinking anywhere from $300 to $1k total there but idk).  Also I might need a computer case to put my older motherboard in and turn it into a NAS.  (it's an LGA 1150 / Z97 motherboard with 10 SATA ports, my main gripe against making it a NAS is that it doesn't support ECC RAM and only supports 32GB.  Also I'd require a minimum of 10 HDD bays and a maximum price of $100 for the case, preferably less.)

The channel kinda fell off when Berkle left the company. As he was the driving force behind it. I know they were going to kill it off, but have since decided they will post a video when they have time. It just the videos are few and far between.

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to Kilrah in Solution for the "3 2 1 rule" backup rule
There are ways to automate but I don't consider them "better", to me a backup is only a backup if it's precisely not constantly online and automatically updated. If you delete something by mistake and the backup system replicates that instantly on the backup the backup is useless. If some malware infects/encrypts your files and that's silently replicated to the backup automatically it's no good either. If a power surge takes your main storage it's likely to also kill the backup if it's connected,...

So I like to do things manually and only connect / power up the backup drives to the PC and run a sync when needed, then disconnect afterwards.

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to atxcyclist in Cloning from SATA SSD to NVMe, what should I know.
I have a 1TB SATA SSD that I’ve just about filled up, so my intention is to move to a 2TB drive and while I’m at it go to an NVMe setup if possible. I don’t want to reinstall everything, just clone as this is a very new installation of Windows as is. I had read that NVMe drives need a GPT partition table and I’m sure my drive is an MBR, is there software that knows this and will set the table up correctly? I’ve used clonezilla many times but only basic options, is something out there that’s better?

    It should.

TPM doesn't really make that much sense to consumers since it's designed to prevent physical attacks on the machine. It's very rare for a consumer to get in a situation where an attacker has physical access to the computer, so unless you're in an environment where that can happen frequently, it's not really that big a deal. It does nothing to prevent software/network attacks, where consumers are actually vulnerable.

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to Chiyawa in Any 4TB+ 2.5" HDDs that are 9.5mm or less?
As far as I know, there are no 4TB 2.5 inch HDD with 9mm height. And, I don't recommend 1TB or 2TB at 9mm height because they are too prone to data corruption and drive destruction. I got many 2.5 inch 1TB 7mm and 9mm drive and they keep on failing.

If you need 4TB with 9mm height and below, your only hope now is SSD. There are a few manufacturer sells 4TB 2.5inch SATA SSD.

Okay I'll admit my data in memory (gray matter) is at least a few years old, but I thought even the free version of Resolve supported GPU acceleration?  (I think it was with only 1 GPU though, to use multiple GPUs you'd need the paid "Studio" version afaik....)  Or has that changed?  Also I thought the free version supported 2160p (or at least 3840x2160, not sure about 4096x2160)....

I have both Noctua NH-U12A and an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 AIO.

I can confidently say that I am very disappointed with this Noctua cooler as its worse than my old BeQuiet! Dar Rock Pro 2 while being more expensive and louder and my AIO absolutely trashes it in temperature and noise.

Yes, the Noctua is more quiet on idle but the Arctic fans are not as loud as the Noctua fans in load while also being over 20°C cooler with the AIO.

Now Arctic is using much thicker rads than other AIO coolers but it was the same price as the Noctua.

IMO, if you can fit the 240/280/360mm Arctic Liquid Freezer II in your case, it should outperform the Noctua while also being cheaper (except 360 which is about the same price)

PianoPlayer88Key reacted to Chiyawa in What's something from an old build that you miss in your current one?
Me? Well, 5.25 drive bays. They are the best expansion ever made. Not enough front USB ports? Chug 5.25 inch USB expansion into it. Your case doesn't have USB-C but your motherboard has a header? Chug one in. Controlling fan from software is tedious? Chug a fan controllers with knobs that can manually control fan speed. Need a small screen for AIDA hardware monitoring software? Buy a LCD screen and chug it in the bays. Always find yourself swapping HDD or SSD in and out? Get one swappable cage and chug it in. Ever need a drawer? You can chug in one. Lots and lots of usage there.

Too bad modern PC cases don't even bother to include one because of unicorn rainbow puke and the 'fashion sense' gone horribly awful that the fashion police should put an end so the public are not being tortured further. Sad to see this super useful features are going to extinct. It also saddened me more that people just under utilising it.

Hot swap front bays for hard drives in my cooler master HAF X. They were great for testing or quickly using hard drives, especially 3.5” HDDs that can’t just run off a USB adapter like 2.5” HDDs can.

This.  I'd actually strictly enforce PL1 - treating it like PL3 or even PL4, which couldn't be exceeded for >10 ms (Intel spec afaik), or ever.

And if it was allowed to be exceeded at all, it would be limited to something like <~0.01 zW (zepto, not Zetta) or so, for zs / (max single-core speed in Hz * thread count).

Basically, the CPU would NEVER be allowed to exceed the prominently-advertised 125W (or 65W or 35W) TDP.

If I had my way, though, I'd revise the TDP spec to show the maximum possible power consumption in a worst-case scenario, like for a CPU that's at the absolute bottom of the silicon lottery barrel (for example, either couldn't at all, or requires > 1.4V to boost just one core even 1 multiplier above base clock), on a very low-end motherboard (only 3 or 4 VRM chokes maximum or whatever those larger often dark grey boxes are near the socket, with no VRM heatsinks at all), paired with a low-tier PSU (that is nowhere near meeting 80+ White, has <~70% of its total capacity on 12V, barely meets ATX spec, etc).

My "TDP" figure would be for all cores running at the single-core turbo frequency with AVX on the FPU (or whatever makes Prime95 small FFT or Aida64 FPU test run modern Intel CPUs hot, like my 4790K at 100°C at <4.0 GHz with a Hyper 212 Evo), with the above parts.
