Hey guys. I'm hoping that some of you who understand networks better than I can help me out with this.
So the dorms at my university supply each room with a single data port to be shared between two people. I'm currently stuck using the god-awful wifi as my roommate doesn't have a wireless card in his PC. We are forbidden from using routers in our rooms - we can only use switches (they don't want to give us any control). If you break that rule and use your own router, they'll shut off the data port in your room. The thing is, I don't really know how switches work... I also don't have a working one at the moment [and would prefer to not have to go and purchase one], but I do have my D-Link DIR-860L that I keep up here disconnected just for game streaming. I know that there are ways to repurpose routers as switches, but I need to know if just disabling the DHCP server and changing the IP of the device (<<this is what i'm confused about?) will keep the dorm internet folks from recognizing it as a router and shutting off my internet. Also, how will I change the router switch back after I disable the DHCP server?
All that I know about what hubs do is that they magically split an ethernet signal from a router - will my campus internet people be able to notice that I'm actually using a router if I try this? Somebody please explain this witchcraft to me. Will I be tethered to crappy wifi forever? Please help me out and teach me a thing or two if you can!
