  2. oc guru 2 from gigabyte allows you to set and "lock" the clock speed, give it a shot http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Utility/vga_utility_oc_guruii_v2.0.exe
  3. Hi This might help have a read.. http://www.overclock.net/t/1395490/ati-hd-7950-7970-bios-mod-thread I read a ton of stuff on gpu bios flashing for my hd 7950 a little while back, as I was having some problems flashing the bios. I was just tinkering around. You CAN flash any bios if you want. You need to do it manually though. (be careful!!!!) I have the HD7950 from Asus, which has a tiny little switch on the card to switch from bios 1 (read only and unflashable) to bios 2 which was flashable. Check your card, you may have two bios, if the bios has been modded, just flick the switch back to the factory one. You might want to think about removing the cooler and reapplying some thermal paste, it could just be overheating, seems like the card has been working ok for you and the previous owner up to now. I'll post back if I find anything else
  4. I put fitbit to her and she said she hasn't heard "good things" about them, she's had plenty of people tell her they break after a short time. I'll look at the mi band 2 later. Anyone got one of these watches they can offer comment on?
  5. Hi everyone, I bought the missus a fuelband years ago, and had it replaced with the SE version after the original developed a fault (Nike had amazing customer service) Sadly, Nike no longer makes these, but she loves the fuelband. Comfort and convenience of features being the main reasons, but comfort being #1 The current fuelband now has deteriorated due to wear, it's mainly rubber so was bound to wear out eventually, she wears it every day. I'm stuck now with buying 2nd hand replacement or refurbs but this won't last forever. So, I've been looking at replacement fitness trackers that are close to the Fuelband. I've been checking out this good site http://www.topbestalternatives.com/nike-fuelband/ Has anyone got experience of these? She primarly uses it as a watch, and it needs to work with iPhone. Anyone got any suggestions on alternatives? Ideally needs to be around the £100 mark (ish) but will pay more if it's particularly good (less is better obvs) She's not particularly technical so I don't think the Samsung gear fit is a good alternative, she really likes the +1 week of battery life on the Fuelband too so needs to last a while on a charge. Thanks.
  6. That's very interesting thank you... I don't suppose you enquired with regards to 1xcpu 1xgpu overclocked? seems pretty pointless if it can't do that. I suspect it will, 1x gpu kicks out a heck of a lot of heat...
  7. someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you would have needed more than 8gb ram for CAD? if it needs to last 5 years, 16gb ram would be minimum if my memory on CAD requirements are correct. You need to also check if CAD work will benefit on multithreaded workloads, then you should get an i7..
  8. I would have thought a 970 and an i5 2500k would be fine for 1080p, what games are you struggling with? JefferyD90 is spot on, peripherals are a superb investment. (with the exception of monitors at the moment- they are changing a lot) i have a 3770k and the platform is already out of date when it comes to nvme.. personally if you already have the money saved, leave it in the bank while your machine still performs well enough for you, there is always something around the corner that you can splash the cash on when you really need to. I too would have an i7
  9. how are you implementing the vpn? I've always been curious of getting vpn set up at the router, instead of per unit.. how much better is USA netflix?
  10. Namely the 360? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ek-water-blocks-predator-360-all-in-one-watercooling-solution-revision-1.1-wc-874-ek.html I'm thinking about a 1070 and block to add to this and purchase together, the goal is super quiet and good boost on the gpu, I'd really appreciate some youtube vids from owners demonstrating the noise from this thing? Any other experiences like adding a block to it would be useful, thanks.
  11. you do know bombs can be concealed in laptops right? they have special swab tests and machines that test of explosive material (if you use skin moisturizer, it can give a false positive btw!) that suitcase PC looks well suspect IMO.
  12. I did literally thousands of flights in that job, it wasn't every time.
  13. I'm fairly certain you'd come up against some resistance to walking on a plane with what looks like a bomb. Sorry but it does. I used to travel a lot with PC gear, at times I had to go through extra security bomb testing swabs with just my laptop. "I can turn it on and show you it's a laptop if you want?" "no no! don't turn it on!" I took a big gulp when he put his rubber glove on - but that's another story.. You can get flightcases that accommodate computers, or what about the intel NUC that was recently reviewed on linustechtips?
  14. If you can get into BIOS it certainly doesn't seem to be an unrecoverable problem. It would be useful to know what exactly the error message you were getting when trying to install windows, (was there an error code?) and what error message appeared when booting windows that was already installed, my advice is this... 1) find and flash the most current bios for your motherboard, ensure that it completes without error 2) restart the machine, go back into bios, and reset settings to factory defaults and check windows installations again If you've done this already (I can't tell if you have) it is possible I suppose that whatever incorrect bios was flashed, it's interfered with how the sata controller talks to the bios. I'm not sure if this can be solved. I would get back on the phone to ASUS and request that they replace the board for you, seeing as it was their bad advice that got you into this predicament in the first place. You could have had a faulty board in the first place? slightly off topic but why did you go for 2x 1070s instead of one 1080?
  15. a single 1080, you lucky boy (or girl!) enjoy! i'm sure it's well earned. :-) (don't get reference cooler though eh? get a strix) regardless of resolution or games, the 1080 is cheaper and performs just as well, better in non sli optimised games, there is a vid on youtube I forget which one where they tested exactly the config your looking at. Personally I'd ALWAYS avoid SLi if possible.
