  1. So, This morning I was determined to overclock my cpu. I was curious if it would affect Rise of the Tomb Raider So I benchmarked in it at stock speeds and after the mountain scene the fans began screaming louder than I knew they could! It also froze. So, I held down the power button to shut it off and turned it back on. I ran it again and it finished this time. Frame rate averaged in the 70's, which seemed low (I was thinking I could get in the 80's), but it didn't freeze or scream, so I thought it may just be a one time incident. Nope. Started overclocking, and running it again as well as Aida 64. Aida was fine, but with TR it started screaming and freezing again. I wasn't sure why it was happening, but after the restart I started just using Aida to stress. After getting above 5ghz I really wanted to try TR again. Tried a couple times (thinking, since it JUST updated, maybe the update just messed up the benchmark). After a couple tries, when booting it told me that no OS was found. Side note, whenever it would scream and freeze steam forgot TR was on the computer, so it would ask me to install, at which point it would discover TR was there. Now is where it gets weird. For clarity C=m.2 SSD, D=Old HDD, E= Really old HDD. Both TR and the OS are on C. I went into the bios to check the and take off the overclock and check the load order after attempting a couple restarts. In the boot order there was the windows boot manager first and E, but no C, which was weird. I unplugged D and E and it booted. TR was acting unstable (freezing etc) but no screaming. Plugged back in D, no OS. "Great! Must be D then!" Unplugged D, plugged in E, boot, but TR still unstable. "Great!". Unplugged E and Plugged in D, and when it BIOS. Checked load order and Windows boot manager and C were there, changed nothing. "Boot?!?" Steam forgot that TR was on the machine again and asked to reinstall until it found it. Benchmarked it and I can't remember if this one was stable or not, but no screaming. Unplugged D, plugged in E. I believe it was at this reboot where my keyboard stopped working, with a few red lights on and I had to unplug and plug it back in. But I Benchmarked, and it was stable. I got 84 fps (as I should be getting.) I tested with each alone plugged in, both together, and neither. Stable every time and 84 fps. What is going on!? More importantly, how do I not run into this problem again. System: 8350k GTX 1080 Asrock Z370 Killer sli/ac ADATA M.2 SSD (non nvme) Some nice enermax cpu cooler 1x8 gb corsair vengeance ddr4 2400 ram (getting another stick this week) old SATA III seagate baracude HDD Some old SATA 150 HDD (Keyboard Coolmaster Pro L) Thanks in advance! IMPORTANT EDIT: Temps never rose above around 64 degrees even with the overclock. So the fans were not spinning that much because of heat.
  2. I've been dreaming of building my own computer for about 3 years now. Watching LTT the whole way, and slowing picking up other channels like BitWit, Jayztwocents, NCIX (rip), etc. Now I've finally built it. Specs: Intel i3 8350k Gigabyte GTX 1080 (it's a Windforce card, but not the G1, I forget) AsRock Killer sli/ac 8 gb ddr4 Corsair Vengeance 2400mhz (single stick, will be adding a second this month) ADATA m.2 ssd (not nvme) 512gb NZXT s340 elite (White) Corsair 550m 2 scrapped 250gb HHD (only one of which is even SATA III, but both 7200 rpm) and an enermax cpu cooler (don't remember which one) Reflections: I'm super happy with how it turned out, but I'm a little disappointed in the cable management. I did not initially build it with that in mind due to this being my first build. I need to do something to resolve the extra ziptied 8pin cable on the graphics card. It has just occurred to me that I may be able to flip the cord (facepalm). I know the 8350k may be controversial. I didn't overpay for it, and I wanted something affordable, overclockable, and current gen. I don't generally need a lot of cores anywho. If I change my mind later, like if I start content creation or games that I play use more cores, I can always have an upgrade path to 8700k, or newer gens if they use LGA 2011(2). I eventually plan on ditching the HHD's. They are a bit noisy creaking here and there. Over all I super duper enjoying my new rig. I think it looks good and it plays great! (side note: 8 pin hanging in pic has been since ziptied)
  3. Thank you for this! I just updated my UEFI and I think it fixed my problem.
  4. Hello! I'm building my first computer right now (yay!). I don't think anything is majorly wrong, just trying to figure out what may be happening. My motherboard is receiving power (leds turn on) but connecting the power button to ground isn't doing anything. ideas? Thanks!
  5. Great, thanks! uh. How would I know if it was digital or not? haha
  6. Can the Hue+ work with other addressable 5v RGB strips? Or can I only use the NZXT ones? Any good alternatives?
  7. I scrapped 2 of my father in law's old pc's. In them, there was a Sata III 380 GB Seagate Baracuda, an 80 GB of the same, and some old Sata 150 7200 RPM 250 GB HDD. I'm building my first PC in an NZXT Elite, so I have 2 hard drive bays. Already have a 500 GB SSD for the OS, but I'm wondering whether I should go for the 250GB or 80GB for the second HHD for storage. I believe they all work fine. Also, anything else I should look out for/ what's the best way to recycle these parts (no free geek or comparable on my island).
  8. Oh, no! OF COURSE I wouldn't want any rgb...it's for... a friend....(psst, thanks wONKEyeYEs) ehem!
  9. Thought something like this would be the case, though if it's free, might as well ask! Thanks!
  10. Hey! Can I connect a 5 pin rgb/w 24v strip to the 12v 4 pin header on my motherboard? A relative already has some extra of these lying around from a home project and I was wondering if i could use them in my first build, but I don't want to somehow kill my motherboard. Silly question, I know. Thanks!
  11. Haha! Ya, I'm sure I'm probably killing them. I'm just not sure how I'm doing it
  12. Thanks to everyone so far! Part of the problem is that my laptop is my main computer that I use. True! But with it sticking out of my laptop to the already huge plug and chord, I feel like I'm going to break something else . In any case, it's a bit bulky for my purposes. An amp would be a bit bulky as well and is a little more than I would like to spend.
  13. I bought the Fostex TH-X00 by the suggestion of some of the people on this forum. I love the headphones, but every adapter I buy seems to break. I feel like I've purchased every 1/4in to 3.5mm adapter on Amazon that has a chord. Of course, since the end and chord are so large on the headphones themselves, I'd like to have one that has a little bit of chord. Any suggestions on what I can buy that won't break in a few months? This is the one I bought most recently, which broke the soonest so far. Thanks in advance!
