  1. I'm using a GTX 760. It's starting to show its age on some newer titles, despite its power, and Nvidia's been kind of shitty about certain things lately. I don't have a whole lot of money, but turning over to Team Red is definitely a goal.
  2. Necroing this thread because of nostalgia (god, I hope I'm not breaking any rules), because I want to thank the others who posted in it! This year, I finally got my own custom-built rig. Way different from what you guys recommended, but the input that was given in this thread encouraged me to do more research and perhaps tone down my price range because I realized that I was not, in fact, an overclocker, and I didn't need to pay for features I didn't need. This is what I ended up getting: CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.99 @ NCIX US) Motherboard: ASRock H97M PRO4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($84.98 @ Newegg) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($84.98 @ OutletPC) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($83.24 @ Amazon) Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($219.99 @ Micro Center) Case: BitFenix Shinobi Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($81.73 @ Mwave) Power Supply: SeaSonic 620W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($74.99 @ Amazon) Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($15.98 @ OutletPC) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($87.98 @ OutletPC) Total: $953.86 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-09-11 09:31 EDT-0400 I just want to thank the members of this community for helping a complete scrub learn some stuff and, much later down the line, not make too stupid decisions on part choices. Thanks, guys. <3
  3. Alright, well... I found LinusTechTips through Tek Syndicate (funny thing: I have no idea how I found them), and from there, I've followed all three channels, partially because of the tech, but also because the personalities (like Linus himself and Luke) are great to watch, and even the other guys (no offense, bad with names, you're all great) really shine in the videos when they're getting in work. ChannelSuperFun is my favorite just so I can see what wacky thing these nerds are getting up to, though I appreciate the main channel and Techquickie just as well. If I win something, I'll be super honored. I currently have a really nice rig that the forums helped make some input on (but over time, as I came to actually be able to afford it, I got different parts, though I learned a bit from the peeps in the thread), so if I win the LinusTechRig I'll give my existing machine to either my girlfriend or someone down on their luck. I'd keep the Surface Pro 3, though. So watch out with that one. I'm not really an active part of this community, so I don't see myself winning that laptop (and that's fine, I don't deserve it) but I am a silent partner and I will likely remain so for some time. Good luck, everybody, and to the members of Linus Media Group: thank you for the content!
  4. My favorite part of the laptop, besides the signatures, is definitely the aesthetics and build quality- red-and-black is my favorite combination of color (as my avatar gives away) and it's pretty much impossible not to love the looks of the G550JK.
  5. Went with an Ivy Bridge board, added a watercooler.
  6. Then should I get a 3570k and overclock it later on instead of the 4670k?
  7. Let me correct myself: I don't want to overclock right now, but I want to leave the door open for myself so that, in the future, if I decide to overclock, I'll already have a processor that can be overclocked. actually whoa that's a damn impressive build, let me take a closer look at that edit: still opted for i5, heavily considered i7 but too expensive, don't want a large SSD, but you totally one-upped me on the memory, so replacing it
  8. I don't want to overclock, but I'll change the PSU. Thanks. actually, decided to upgrade the mobo anyways
  9. I've been playing video games since I was a little kid, back in the days where you . I've had pretty terrible loading times in my day, and they've only gotten better as time goes on. I neither need or want an SSD for games, and I can't think of any games that require one, either.
  10. Why the downgrade to a 3570k? Not really feeling that build, can you explain why I should go in that direction? I don't want an SSD for anything besides the OS and programs. Would prefer games on an HDD. I went for that 144Hz 24-inch. Thanks for the feedback!
  11. I'd really rather not go back to AM3. The console optimizations are for quad-core gaming, not octa-core, anyways. Four of the cores in both consoles go the OS and other stuff. EDIT: also, why're you calling a modern Haswell i5 a Core 2 Duo?
  12. CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.99 @ Newegg) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120M 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ Newegg) Motherboard: MSI Z77 MPOWER ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($189.99 @ Newegg) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($138.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($93.93 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($84.99 @ NCIX US) Case: BitFenix Shinobi Window ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ NCIX US) Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 850W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($99.99 @ Newegg) Monitor: Asus VG248QE 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($239.99 @ Amazon) Total: $1112.85 I plan on buying this and investing in a GPU once some non-reference designs for the R9 290 are out. Will possibly opt for crossfiring those for an upgrade later on down the line instead of replacing my card every few years. Thoughts? edited on 11/10/13
  13. Thanks for the responses (jesus, this place is active!) also, it's important to me because they were playing crossfire together, and if you play crossfire with someone you're either friends or you utterly despise them
