Eh? Do people really think like this when a new vulnerability is discovered? With this kind of mindset, you might as well just stop using anything because any piece of software/hardware will have vulnerabilities in it.

@Crunchy Dragon Have you listened LP's unreleased song? Mike Shinoda told in an interview that it was supposed to be included in the Meteora album but decided to shelve it because it sounds similar to Numb.

Kind of nonstop since it released. It's very much a Meteora song, in the same way that She Couldn't is Hybrid Theory.

Seems like a good idea to me. Too bad people who don't know understand what the news are saying have gotten riled up, scared and are now acting like if the world is ending.

Just so that people understand what is happening because I think OP did a poor job explaining the situation.

This news article is that the phones themselves will now check the targetSdkVersion and refuse to install if it is set to level 23 (Android 6, Marshmallow, released in 2015). That seems fair to me, and I don't think Marshmallow was picked at random. Android 6 was the update that introduced individual app permissions. You didn't use to be able to allow an app to record audio but block it from using the camera. It was all or nothing. That changed in Android 6.

One important thing to note is that you can override this behavior with adb. Google is therefore not removing the option to sideload outdated apps, but they are making it more difficult.

Wanna run an app designed for phones released 8 years ago and possibly haven't been updated since? Install it through adb and use the flag. It should be a very rare thing to need to do anyway. Or maybe ask the developer to update the app. It might not even need any code changes if the app is simple and/or doesn't use any deprecated functions. Just update one number.

This change is done so that apps can't just target a very low API level to get around new security features introduced in newer versions.

    That's a strawman argument.

Teamviewer case, Linus has to stay with the old version which the perpetual license belongs with (as it's part of the contract)

Filmora, well my view on that is that they were within their rights...but it makes it worse for them that they stated not a lifetime license, but a lifetime updates where in the FAQ they implied the updates included version changes.

You purchased the phone, you do not have the right to free upgrades if the manufacturer decides not to.  It's like me trying to claim that since I purchased Windows 10 I should get Windows 11 for free (it is within MS's right to not provide it for free).  Anyways, don't like the update, then don't update it.  You do not own the rights to what the company can do with updates.

I don't think you understand what open-source is then, this kind of deprecation of older APIs, and instruction sets are done quite regularly (Further Reading: Linux).

Like others have said, you're overstating the case here. You'll still be allowed to sideload apps; you just wouldn't get to sideload some eight-year-old app just because.

As it stands, people forget that Google isn't a charity doing things out of the goodness of its heart. It's a business using open source as a strategic tool. Antitrust concerns are one thing, but it doesn't owe you completely unfettered access. And it's amusing/disappointing that people will rail against Apple as some unfathomable evil while still putting Google on a pedestal; Google happily locks down things when it makes business sense.

I'm going to guess Google want to avoid having to support much older API levels. They don't want to end up with a Windows situation where it is hard to move forward when there is so much old stuff around. Assuming such functionality is removed from ongoing Android versions, the old apks wont work even if you can get them on there. The correct solution is for apps to remain updated.

The M2 Pro Mac mini is actually a bad value when specced up compared to a base M1 Max Mac Studio. With the latter you get better cooling and more I/O

Apple has introduced its long, long-expected 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. They're faster and last longer on battery, but they also support more memory. The M2 Max models support up to 96GB of RAM — that's more than rivals (64GB is often the limit), and Apple even claims its MBPs can handle creative scenes that are too large for Windows portables. You also get Wi-Fi 6e, HDMI 2.1 (8K support!) and a few other niceties at the same price as before.

There's also a huge Mac mini update. Not just the M2, there's finally an M2 Pro model. Better monitor support (up to three screens) and four Thunderbolt ports, too. The base M2 system is also cheaper than before at $599, although it still starts with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.

Apple is being hyperbolic, I'm sure, but the 96GB of RAM is a huge deal if you're working with very large media/3D/data projects. And this is simply a welcome update that should help the MBP stay competitive with the latest Windows laptops in terms of raw performance.

The Mac mini update might be the real game changer. The lower price makes it a better "my first Mac" system, but the M2 Pro version is huge if you've wanted a fast headless Mac desktop without splurging on the Mac Studio. Might even be my next computer.

The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!

The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:

The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:
5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify. 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members. 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded. Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.

All winners have now been contacted and received their prize

    Ts&Cs:
Max one prize per user If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now). "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016.
