SubTract got a reaction from moba_ in Cleaning a cpu without Isopropyl Alcohol?
if you have a girlfriend/fiance/wife makeup wipes contain a high percentage of isopropyl alcohol and they don't break up and lose fibres so I use them to clean the thermal paste off. :)

Wait, is this the same Humble Bundle that recently capped/cut the donations to charity from 100% to 15%?
    https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/04/humble_bundle_will_begin_to_cap_charity_donations_next_month

    Edit:
So the creators of humble bundle sold the company a while back so the current owners are the ones involved in this donation cut but the original owners (not involved with humble anymore) are the ones pushing this lawsuit and not the current owners of the company as it stands today.

No they aren't. Amazon, gamestop, and epic games just to name a few competitors.

These steam lawsuits are complete garbage. All they are are mindless ramblings about the way valve runs its business without actually pointing out anything actually illegal it does. "waaaaahhhhh 30% is too much, I don't like it! I'm going to sue you to lower it!"
They want the benefits of being on a marketplace, without having to pay for those benefits. They are just greedy.
Steam does not have a monopoly, they can move to any other marketplace or even sell their games on their own platform. The great thing about capitalism is they have a choice to do what they want. I had a business on Etsy, and I hated the increase in fees and other things they did. What did I do? Sue Etsy? No, I moved my business to another platform. Not only is my revenue up, but i'm paying much less in fees too.
Anyone who tries to insist steam is a monopoly has absolutely no clue what they are talking about.

SubTract got a reaction from Latvian Video in Experiences with non-techies
I had an old lady (about 70ish) come in looking for a new laptop.
She started to tell me that she was going to overclock her laptop like she had done with her current Vista laptop.
She "Has a friend overseas that showed her how to do it" Apparently its "Really easy and all you have to do it open the root of your computer and change the administrator file"
It has a "little box that asks you how fast you want your CPU" her vista laptop is running at 15GHz.
I literally face-palmed in front of her. I had to get someone else to finish serving her as I couldn't keep my composure.

ROFL. I suppose they're probably a 1366x768 screen. They might actually run games. People who buy this sort of stuff should just buy a console. Its so sad to say but its true.

PSU Tier List 4.0 rev. 14.8 (END OF LIFE)
    Last Update: 27-07-2021

    Legend :
Gray - EoL/obsolete and/or otherwise not recommended for purchase.
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)
Hyphen / Dash - Series / lineups separator
Slash - Models (inside one series) separator
Parenthesis / Round brackets - Model variations (which belong to the same position)
Square brackets - Additional description (wattage range, part of SKU code, label / casing color, release year)
Numbers in red colored square brackets - footnotes, see descritptions at the end of respective tiers
Low priority subtiers - Lack of info (no reviews) or minor issues (see the corresponding tab in the spreadsheet). Not recommended for purchase over any normal priority units.
Multi-rail units - Not necessarily better than single-rail units but provide an extra layer of protection by having 12V OCP set lower than total capacity, which is especially relevant for very high capacity units (=>1kW). Pay attention to rails configuration when using with high power draw components to avoid shutdowns.

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, review sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

[1] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega, 6900 XT and nVidia RTX3080 / 3080 Ti / 3090.
[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* have potential problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.
[3] Units that don't reach full rated capacity under full rated input voltage range.
[4] Antec EA Pro Gold has versions for Chinese market made by FSP on competely different, worse, group-regulated platform (tier D). Source #1, #2.
[5] Corsair HX1200 and HX1200i units with LOT codes in range between 2030* and 2041* may exhibit motherboard compatibility issues, entitled for advanced RMA, source.
[6] Early EVGA G3 revisions had issues with out-of-spec performance under overload.
[7] Older Seasonic Focus revisions (made before 2018) had transient sensitivity issues. Some new SKUs are not affected because they were released later (Seasonic Focus GM/GX/PX refreshes, Phanteks AMP, NZXT C/E etc.).
[8] Seasonic PRIME based units experience shutdowns with RTX3080/3090 (and possibly RX6900 XT) GPUs, especially ones with unlocked power limit like FE and ASUS Strix. It is recommended, if going with such units, to overprovision wattage, 1kW for RTX3080 and 1.2kW for RTX3090, or power-limit the GPU, or performing a 'dirty' fix of disconnecting a pin of 12V V-sense wire from PSU-side connector of 24-pin motherboard cable (courtesy of Jonny Guru). Units based on post-2018 revisions of Seasonic Focus platform and majority of units by other OEMs are not affected.

Technically it does affect performance. Normally due to the fact there is no place left for a page or swap file. seek times can also increase with more data though normally very minor difference. Linux and I'd assume Mac OS use a Swap partition so you shouldn't fill it up.

As somebody who works in retail, and sells Mac's. The general consumer does seem to think that Mac's are invunerable to malware. I would say at least half, on certain days considerably more. Even mentioning antivirus to these people gets a very distinct "Mac's don't get virus's" response.

Also, being mad at people for spreading this. When correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't apple the one making ad's where the windows computer (man in a suit) was sick. And the Mac (trendy dude) was all like I don't get virus'.

Don't get me wrong OSX/OS11 seems to be much more secure since they've moved to gpl3.0 compliance and agreement. But apples inability to publicly acknowledge problems will mean that this will likely remain a problem unless they themselves address it.

Realistically, the best solution would be people needing a common sense best practises online license to even be able to use the internet. That would likely solve a good 80% of malware cases on all platforms.

But to the average computer illiterate person, the "Apple doesn't get viruses" is something they do believe, there is a reason it's a stereotype.

There's been people on this very forum who complain that either they or their parents computer got infected with a virus and their response was "fuck Windows, I'm just going to buy me/them a mac".

Whether it's true or not doesn't stop some people from thinking it's a fact.

SubTract got a reaction from ocanada_techguy in YouTube Music makes some fixes, Google Play Music though
Now that Google play music is being shut down. The cost of YouTube Premium needs to drop or I'll be out. I would assume many others too.

YouTube music sounds significantly worse that GPM even with everything set to play at "High" quality.

The search function is confused and because it doesn't know if you want the YouTube video on just the audio it shows you both results. Mixed together.
At least now when you're casting there is a video toggle.
On that note, when casting, the cover art for YouTube music stays in the middle of the screen. Rather than the gentle position transition it made around the screen with GPM. (Super useful for those of us with OLEDs)

The navigation is a mess, there is no extra way of filtering content. Not a problem with things like artist and album, but very problematic with things like downloads, subscriptions & playlists.
The home and explore pages are not only under the opposite headings, they're overly cluttered and makes finding anything difficult.

It could really use a video/audio toggle up the top that changes what the app is displaying FULL STOP.

I honestly think they'd be better off scrapping the app completely and starting again. Or just put GPM back in full support, at least it got most of the basic stuff right.

Also can somebody tell me if the YouTube Premium features for YouTube music listed in Google's FAQ here: https://support.google.com/youtubemusic/answer/9266556?hl=en are actually real?

If you don't have YouTube Premium do you not get background playback in YouTube music?
Can you not use music only mode without the subscription.

If this is real. Why the actual F&$% is anybody actually using YouTube Music???

Google has really shot themselves in the foot with this one.

SubTract got a reaction from twofingerrightclick in Need LCD controller board for old iMac display.
    Hi guys,

I recently got an old (late 2012) iMac. Now the actual computer itself is toast. But the display is fine. I was hoping to turn the display into a monitor.

The problem is I can't find an LCD controller for this particular LCD anywhere. It is an LG display LM270WQ1-SDF1.

From what I can gather, I can find controllers for the SDA1 - SDE3 varients. The SDF1 seems to use edp instead of lvds, I can find a controller that seemingly does the correct resolution and refresh rate but I can't find anything that will do the backlight As well.

The screen uses a molex 504051-0601 connector for the LED backlighting.

Does anyone have any idea on where I can find a controller board with a DP, HDMI or DVI connector on it for this screen, that has a backlight connector. Or is there some other way I can control the backlight separately?

Otherwise at this point any other ideas are also welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jacob.

She "Has a friend overseas that showed her how to do it" Apparently its "Really easy and all you have to do it open the root of your computer and change the administrator file"
It has a "little box that asks you how fast you want your CPU" her vista laptop is running at 15GHz.

Sounds like a gfx driver issue... had a kind of similar behaviour with a gtx 760 in my system and a "recent" driver then.

Did a rollback to the last installed version, that didn't crash the system and all was good.

NVidia is now as bad with driver stability as AMD/ATI were. But Nvidia doesn't only crash the gfx driver to restart, but kicks your system out of orbit as well.

    Try an older driver.
