  1. Right I see, the price difference here between the 6600 and 6500 is only about 20 USD, (30 NZD) I'm not sure if it's that similar else where, but I'd usually spend the $30 and since it's such a little chunk of the overall price, which will make the system viable if you end up wanting up upgrade the GPU in a few years (not that I ever actually do). I'm not sure if they price difference is that slight elsewhere. I was unsure on the GPU, the 1060 does seam to handle 1080p very well, and the 1060 to 1070 difference is pretty huge price wise.
  2. When you say overkill do you mean the cpu/gpu are not balanced, or that is too much for minecraft etc and Other games a 10 year old would play?
  3. Thanks for the feedback, wi fi card is the cheapest one i could find with ac but i might have missed something. Perhaps a 1060 would be a better fit? Any reason to get a k series processor if they will definitely not overclock? Thanks for the feedback, wi fi card is the cheapest one i could find with ac but i might have missed something. 4. Hi All, I'm helping my uncle build a rig for his 10 year old son. The it's for gaming, probably at 1080p, and the hope is that it can grow with him. My Uncle wants to go reasonable higher end within reason, and reliability is a focus. Needs wi fi, and a Nvidia shield compatible GPU. I haven't put together a rig for a year or so, so I'm after some general feed back, especially if anything has changed in the last year or so. Questions - I'm not super clear on mobo sockets, what's the difference between the M-A and M-K versions etc? - What's the deal with Kaby-lake, from Wikipedia the clock speeds look lower than skylake? - For reliability are we still talking Kingston Ram, ASUS Mobos, Intel/Samsung SSDs? Any thoughts and criticism is welcome. Thanks
  5. My question about all three of these builds is just, how is that 2 core 3.2GHz CPU for modern games?
  6. I'm pretty sure she is no keen on the Intel dual Core, she is a big multitasker, and is worried about only having two cores. Also she definitely won't be overclocking, and my understanding is that chip isn't so worth while if you don't. Does anyone know how it performs in games? It would save $60 on the processor, and would allow an $80 Mobo too (http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-h81mhds) if she was ok with 2 ram slots. I'm seeing a lot of love for the 270. PBTech my preferred retailer don't stock one, but we could maybe branch out. Is the X not worth the money?
  7. Hi Guys, The better half and I have both been in poor health and unable to work this year at all, so gaming is all we have at the moment, sadly her rig is on it's way out. I was hoping for some help specing out a low price build, in the hope of taking advantage of upcoming Black Friday sales locally. We are in NZ and were going to go to the PB Tech event on Friday. I managed to upgrade went I was working last year, and she has been suffering with a 6 year old rig so I'm hoping I can scrape together enough to help her out. I've put together what seems like a reasonable build, however I don't know AMD very well, I usually go Intel/Nvidia so I need some help. Here is what I've come up with? [PCPartPicker part list](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/qDyP99) / [Price breakdown by merchant](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/qDyP99/by_merchant/) **CPU** | [AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd4300wmhkbox) | $148.34 @ PB Technologies **Motherboard** | [Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-ga78lmtusb3) | $109.25 @ PB Technologies **Memory** | [G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl8d8gbxm) |- $110 **Video Card** | [sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB Dual-X Video Card](http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-112170120g) | $297.84 @ PB Technologies As well as **Case** Zalman ZM-T5 $67.5 She has a new SSD, and storage drive so they can be re used She also has a working 550W power supply that is 6 years old, I would like to avoid re using that but it might be necessary to keep costs down. If we really had to she could reuse her old case too, but that would be undesirable. Thought? I'm mostly unsure about the graphics card. She has an old 1640x1024 monitor, and she wants to be able to run modern AAA games like Bioshock infinite on max if possible. Is the 270X enough, is a 280X really needed? would a 260 cut it, or something from Nvidia? The GTX 760 is only $50 more. I have a GTX770 for a reference point. Also would the processor I've chose keep up with something like a 4670? Which is what I have so it's a good point of reference. Any help is much appreciated.
  8. My favorite piece of tech is actually my DS Lite, I love that thing so much, even though all I've ever really played on it is Pokemon and Tactics. Computer wise, my first SSD, like a lot of people, I made such a difference I bullied my GF into upgrading too even though we are super poor atm.
  9. Found you guys when my old rig was starting to die, it would have probably been fine for a little while longer if I'd avoided a few specific games, but the more I watched your videos the mode I not only needed a new system but to do an amazing job of building it! That was back when Linus was trying the first few love streams and I've been watching most days ever since. You guys have built a great brand, and had a lot of great follow on and side projects, like this fantastic forum, great work guys keep it up.
  10. I wish I new, probably something pretty entry level. A proper windows laptop but nothing fancy or powerful, no gaming applications just word processing, internets etc. she is a teacher. Small size is probably helpful to a degree, but not too small a screen. But I don't know for sure, and I imagine she doesn't either. She will probably want somewhere to "shop" for what she wants.
  11. Hi guys, My not so tech savy sister in Law has just moved to London and needs a new laptop. Can anyone help me point her in the right direction? I realise her best bet is probably still to buy online, though short of doing it for her she may not take that route. She probably wants to walk into a store, if only to save time as she has started work over there already. Also she may not have a safe mailing address yet. I'll try to tell her not to buy anything on the spot so I can do some fact checking on makes and models for her, but again she may not have time. I've never been to the UK (I'm from NZ) so any input would be really helpful. Cheers Nim
  12. Love the look of the dust/water proofing and the skin has come up really nice. I'd love to win one :-)
