I just posted this on the r/Minecraft subreddit though thought I'd post this here too. 

I might be more than a day late but life got in the way!

If like me you prefer to play with shaders in order to make a snapshot playthrough something more long term then this is the post for you! I haven't yet seen a post related to getting this working and whilst I am sure a lot of people out there may know how to do this I also feel as though I should make others aware of it too! Keep reading below to reproduce this yourself.

Before and after enabling shaders on 24w14potato Snapshot

Step 1 - Make sure the Minecraft Poisonous Potato (24w14potato) update is installed in the default Minecraft launcher (Download the 24w14potato snapshot and open it at least once, then close down the game and the launcher if it is still running).

Step 2 - Download the Universal Jar from Iris Shaders website. Make sure Java is installed to double-click this.

Step 3 - Open the Universal Jar that was just downloaded (Iris-Installer-3.2.0.jar) and select the game version - Look for '24w14potato' in the drop down. If done correctly the 'Use Distant Horizons beta version' check box should be disabled and there should also be text in yellow saying 'Warning: 24w14potato is a snapshot build and may lose support at any time'.

Step 4 - Select the installation type. In this case select 'Iris Only' (Unfortunately 'Iris + Fabric' will crash on launch) and make sure that the Installation Directory is set to the default .minecraft folder. Select Install!

Step 5 - Re-Open the Minecraft Launcher, inside the installation tab should now be a version called 'Iris & Sodium for 24w14potato'. Select Play and that's the installation complete! Go grab a shader and have fun!

In the case your block borders have now become really thick with a shader pack turned on, try with a texture pack. This sorted it for me. Only working for Java edition currently.

As mentioned by @OhioYJ what you're suggesting here is normal, are you turning this switch on/of every time you use the computer though? I would recommend only flipping this when necessary, ie working on your machine or if it will be off for weeks at a time. I found out the hard way that these rocker switches were not designed to be used in that way, eventually mine stopped working as a switch!

Ryzen motherboards often have settings to put the CPU in ECO mode (45W or 65W depending on what chip, for the 3700X I have at work it's 45W), and sometimes even lower, so you can make them absolutely sip power and still have plenty of oomph for homelab tasks. 

 

You have made a very solid point... I have been meaning to do more with my NAS so this might be the best thing for it! I like that idea a lot

If memory serves, the 1680v2 at that clock beat the 2700X (TechYesCity has a video on it), so it won't be a performance upgrade unless the spectre/meltdown fixes hit the Xeon especially hard. 2700X is a more modern and power efficient chip though, if that's a plus. It may slightly be better in straight single core as well, the main strength of older Intel chips is in games, due to the very low latency ringbus architecture. 

Not worth the effort, Ryzens in general don't clock well, Zen/Zen+ chips (2000 series is Zen+) capped out at 4-4.2GHz for most samples. 

Are you getting a great deal on this? Because otherwise get 3200Mhz CL16, should be cheaper (or CL14 if it's affordable but often those are stupid expensive kits still). Ryzens need the Infinity Fabric clock (FCLK) 1:1 with memory clock for good performance. Most Zen+ chips cap out at 1600Mhz FCLK which = 3200MHz RAM (as it runs at 1600Mhz). I saw some people successfully run some 3400Mhz kits but I think that was careful selection of specific kits + silicon lottery luck with the CPU. I got out of Ryzen ages ago so I don't remember exactly.

I may still throw it together with a much cheaper motherboard and ram but we'll see.

Hiya folks, 

Today I won a Ryzen 7 2700X on auction for a whopping £47. Because of this small win I am tempted to get an ASUS TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II motherboard and a 64GB kit of 3600MHz CAS18 for £270 total. Combined total with CPU is just below £320. I already have a cooler that will handle this chip with correct mounting. Is this going to be worth it or shall I not bother? 

I have my E5-1860 V2 overclocked to 4.5GHz currently and get a score similar to the stock 2700X ~ Cinebench R15 points as follows: ~ 1652 points Multi & 162 points single core. 

I am going to overclock this chip, will the price be worth it when the chip is overclocked?

In case it was not obvious, I have been out of the loop for a while.

Yes, I believe OP has now established that from my response but I think they are trying to figure out how the whole 'two USB ports per header' works if that makes sense? Or at least in terms of how it will work with the case they will be using I think...

A header consists of 9 pins, a single USB port only needs 4. As such a typical USB header cable will have two USB terminations on the end and does not need a splitter. See below.

A single header can provide for two USB ports, therefore two USB headers equal 4 usable USB ports.

I first want to address the fact that the PSU that you have in your system is a cheap PSU (please get a better one based on your rig) but it does have a smart thermal fan speed control circuit to which would likely mean that it is spinning up higher under load. I do not believe the fan on this unit ever turns off though. 

I'd suggest stress test CPU and GPU separately to each other. If the noise is not there when just single tested on their own then move onto both at the same time, you'll then likely figure out if it is PSU fan or not that is making the noise. You will want the side panel off when testing under load to hear any changes in noise and to figure out which components are louder than others. 

I'd recommend a good 600W PSU really for your build. 500W bronze cert is pushing it a bit if you want your machine to last.

This info would have been useful before hand, I know you've just edited your original post to reflect it. 

I'm afraid to say that Windows 11 is a different kettle of fish, neither have I worked on it myself so I could be very little help from here on. I can imagine the process is not too dissimilar to using a Windows 10 bootable usb though.

OK can I confirm that all your drivers are up to date? Most notably your graphics drivers? 

If you can boot from a Windows 10 install media drive, you should be able to fix your issue. I reckon it has something to do with the EFI partition on your drive after the BIOS update, that'll likely be why it says your OS is missing. 

I could be wrong but worth a shot. 

First of all, what does event viewer say in it's logs after the restart? Second, have you tried a different plug/wall socket from elsewhere in your home? 

I'm trying to rule out whether the issue is software or hardware/power related... 

Have you reseated your RAM or GPU yet? If you're no longer getting a display even with original CPU I'd try that first.

I see... It may be that you need the codec to play it properly in VLC on Windows whilst Linux has the codec already... 

Edit: most codecs can be installed to VLC for free.

Do you have the latest version of VLC? Also how well does the video play in another program? 

Are you perhaps running an SSD on your laptop but not on your PC? Or at least are you accessing the video on your PC from an HDD? 

I could also argue that there is less overhead on Manjaro and as such VLC is faster. 

Unplug what you think it is. If the noise still continues, carry on (one at a time) unplugging devices with moving parts until you can determine what it is. As @OhioYJsuggests, it could be a drive that it making the noise. It could also be a water pump, a fan you hadn't considered and anything else. Some of these things should only be unplugged briefly so as to not cause damage. It could take a while though as I'd also recommend turning the machine off to unplug anything. 

When you have definitely found what it is, check its surrounding area for any potential to rub/ways for it to not work as intended.

Yeah UK resident here and I totally agree that this particular contract does sound... interesting to say the least despite the big brand that they are. I have seen plenty of other delivery services let you use your own bike and whatnot with not a huge amount of extra hassle, even in the US. 

Do you have a moment to talk about your cars extended warranty? 

In all seriousness, wish I had more experience with Noctua products, never had an issue with any of their stuff whenever I've bought from them though.

I'm unsure whether anyone has experience with this software or not but I'm hoping someone can help. I am trying to implement a new computer monitoring and classroom management software in my School/workplace, the software is Veyon Master. See below link for their website.

I have discovered that Veyon Master cannot use Demo mode across different Subnets in my network, the remote view and remote control functions over VNC work great no matter what range the computers are on, however. Instead of having to manually set static IP addresses for the devices that are on a different subnet, does Veyon have the feature to get around this?

I should also ask since it is not entirely obvious to me (yet), how can I set up the functionality of users to see only certain groups rather than the whole computer directory? For example, User X only sees two computer groups rather than all.

I am using a domain controlled network.

EDIT: Not sure if this should be put into Networking section on the forum or not. Mods, feel free to decide.
