tl;dr: your GPU or CPU (probably cpu) is overheating and throttling down which causes this style of periodic and persistent stuttering. Good clean or new cooler is in order. I think I know the likely culprit: THERMALS. Hear me out, I used to experience the same drops on my old desktop, bought a new CPU cooler. I experience the same issues on my laptop now, nothing I can do about cooling. Game sutters every minute for a few seconds. Run your game for a while with MSI Afterburner recording in the background. There's two scenarios, either you CPU is thermal throttling or your GPU is thermal throttling. For desktops it's usually the CPUs as the GPUs tend to be built with sufficient cooling for 100% usage for sustained usage. My laptop has this stuttering because the GPU thermal throttles. My old desktop it was the CPU throttling. For the CPU: - compare the FPS graph to the CPU usage and CPU temperature. Hopefully you see a link, when the FPS drops the cpu usage drops. Up to that point the CPU temp graph will show the temp increasing until the stutter starts, when the stutter starts and usage drops you should see the temperature go down. If you see a trend like this then it is safe to say that your CPU is running too hot and throttling. For the GPU: - bit easier, there's a gpu_temp_limit and gpu_no_load limit. These two are the opposites of each other and between 1 and 0 (digital). Compare to the FPS, when you see the FPS drop and the gpu_temp_limit hits 1 then the gpu_no_load_limit will go to 0. That's where your GPU stops processing to cool down indicated by gpu_Temp_limit. I would wager that your CPU is overheating and throttling to save itself, my old desktop did exactly that. If you have the stock cooler on I would recommend a new one. I got myself a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Turbo with two fans, great piece of kit and chopped 30C off all my CPU temps, totally worth it for £30. If it's your GPU or you have an aftermarket cooler you might want to crack open that case and give it a good clean. GPU might be filled with dust. Also I doubt the other guy in this thread knows what he's talking about, that or he never had such an issue. Edit: just to say, PSUs can cause performance issues if they can't supply enough power but given that your 1080 can run at 120fps for a good while it is definitely not the PSU. Motherboards don't cause stutter like this. Not everything is software, check physical things. Mr Temperature is an asshole.

Whenever the laptop goes to sleep and I attempt to wake it up by pressing space the fan revs up shortly before the laptop throws a BSOD in my face with the vague code memory_management. Below are the links for the dump files and the perfmon report files. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y0RzkPT_lZs2aBn9x51aTAJ8wAOejT4H/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/11z6Mj9EdoFFK-hpssEud8GUOom_MHLhx/view?usp=sharing As requested in the pinned post: OS: Windows 10 Pro x64 Original OS OEM 1 year, manufactured last year according to tag on the bottom. OS is 3 months old, had to reinstall after installing an extra 8GB DDR4 2400MHz ram after windows refused to boot, took a CMOS reset to get it to post at all. I have 16GB now. CPU: i5-8265u GPU: Nvidia MX150 10W 2GB (<- aka the terrible version of it) Manufacturer: Dell Model: P77F001 Laptop Potentially useful details: Before the BSODs started I had done an 85mv undervolt using Intel XTU but it should have reset after the first BSOD, Intel XTU has been uninstalled since then. The laptop ran stable with the undervolt. Later that week I got a GPU driver update. After the update the BSODs started. GPU drive has been updated twice since that version and BSODs still happen. I've just set the laptop to never go to sleep but would like to have that functionality back. It only ever BSODs when waking from sleep, I've never had a BSOD on this machine other than after sleep.

Heads up, I'm using a laptop. I've got a problem with what I call smooth stutter in some games. Kinda hard to describe so here I go. Basically the games run smooth at 45-60fps (higher even if I disable Vsync, some games have horrible tearing though so I leave it on). Then every half second the time sort of slows down and then speed up again. It does this persistently always at the same time intervals. The game runs smooth though, but time slows down in a way. This is worse than playing with a constant 25fps (believe me, I've played games at a constant 25fps and it's nicer than 60fps with slowdown). The game it's most noticeable in is GTA-V. I'm reinstalling the game now to try and get some data using Afterburner so will post that here soon. System specs: Intel i5-8265u 1.6GHz-3.6GHz Nividia MX150 2GB (I'm pretty sure it's the slower 10W model not the faster 25W model) 16GB DRR4 2400MHz SODIMM both slots being used 256GB SATA SSD display at 1080p 60Hz It's a Dell Inspiron 5580. Minecraft running somewhere with medium settings also suffers from this despite easily getting >100fps. Having checked the MSI afterburner graphs after playing, the GPU usage spikes up and down between 100% and very lower number, looking at the gpu_temp_limit graph (1 or 0) and the gpu_no_load_limit graph (also 1 and 0) they're direct opposites and coincide with the GPU usage which suggest the GPU is being throttled as soon as it hits 70C. I'm considering thermal throttling in the GPU, when just browsing chrome or using discord it sits at 60C. When gaming or running anything intensive it tops out at 70C which I believe is the BIOS limit and pathetically low. I've tried checking 1% and 0.1% FPS lows the one other game Rolling Line (you've probably never heard of it, also horribly optimised GPU side decent on CPU) but Afterburner doesn't seem to be recording either of them. Other changes I've made in the system are disabling control flow guard in windows defender for specific games not the whole system. I've also changed the GPU TDR_timeout to 10s rather than 2s which helped with running Star Citizen at a constant 25fps Ultra (yeah the game runs better on Ultra than Low they haven't really worked on the graphics settings) no slowdown that is apparent in other games (alas with alpha 3.9 it's slammed it down to single digit fps so I'm sitting this patch out). Is there anything I can do?

New Keyboard won’t type but lights up please help!
coconut_pie replied to Robertsson's topic in Peripherals
Might be defective, try sending it back under warranty. -
Can you record the CPU, GPU, and Memory usage using afterburner or another tool and upload here? Would help diagnose the problem. For example on my laptop Star Citizen runs at 25fps in space (7fps in Lorville lmao I'm looking into getting a faster system). When I got the game I had the same FPS but insane fluctuations and stupid stutter, yeah ram was being maxxed out at 8gigs. Plopped in an extra 8gigs and the frames are more constant and less stutter.

coconut_pie replied to Robertsson's topic in Peripherals
Have you installed the drivers? Might need it, I don't mean the regular windows ones but whatever the manufacturer recommends. Often the drivers also have light control. -
For those who have used Shadow PC, how is it? Would you recommend it? I was looking to build a new desktop this summer but with the UK Shadow PC streaming starting in July (hopefully) I was hoping it might be a better alternative considering I might (emphasis on the might) be going to uni in september. I have a reasonably powerful laptop for my everyday work but wanted something to game. I mainly want to enjoy Star Citizen (already got it, runs at 25fps on my laptop). Was considering the basic package plus a 256GB expansion. That should set me back about £300 for a year's worth vs a PC that would be at least £1000. I have streamed some games on Geforce NOW and it runs pretty well. My internet is sold as 100mbps but I'm using it over wifi on the second floor of the house so I get an average of 70mbps down, 20mbps up, and a 5ms latency time.
-
I've got my old desktop sitting in the attic because it "died" on me in September. Since been replaced by a laptop (with 16GB DDR4, i5-8265u, mx150, 256GB SSD). The laptop is somewhat adequate for playing various games I like but not even slightly good enough for games like FH3 and Star Citizen (lol 25fps in space). I plan to build a new desktop later in summer but getting the money for that is going to be hard. Thought about maybe getting some of the money from selling old PC components if there's still any value in them, otherwise I might hand it down to my brother who just wants a rig that can run Minecraft and GTAv. Components: AMD Phenom ii x4 955 (quadcore, 3.2GHz). random Asus motherboard. 8GB DDR3 1333MHz (at least one stick is dodgy but I don't know which one) Asus GTX 750TI WD Blue 1TB HDD 7200rpm (5 years old, might also be the death problem) 2 Corsair AF120 fans, the old model without LEDs but fans are fans. Cooler Master Hyper 212 Led Turbo (practically new) NZXT H230 silent case, black (ever heard of this model?) Corsair CS450M 80+ Gold Semi-modular PSU. Random component from the attic, I also have an Antec Minuet 350 case. It's in great condition too but 100% not saleable I realise the components are worth dirt at this point, the chinese are selling the same CPU and mobo combo now. The ram is as good as dead and ought to be chucked. The 750ti is way out of date (might it score $20?). The HDD should probably be chucked or turned into an external drive. I'm more interested if any of the components in green can get anything, as far as I can tell the PSU is in great condition sans the dust covering the fan. The Hyper 212 is practically new as I got it earlier last year to fix a thermal throttling issue (thanks to whoever helped me appreciated it a lot at the time). The case is in "used condition". The interior is good, there is a DVD drive in one of the 5.25" bays and I've lost the cover for it if I were to take the drive out. If I get the money together for the new rig (£1000 as I need a new monitor as well, current one has only VGA and DVI input) then I would be able to reuse just the Hyper 212, the cooler doesn't actually fit into the current case with the side panel on. I would like to save £60 on the PSU but the current wish list contains R5-3600x and a 2060 (or Vega 56) with the estimate at 420W. 450W isn't enough headroom so I'm going with a 550W 80+ Gold unit. I suppose I could skip getting a new case but changing the cooler to something smaller than the stupidly tall Hyper 212 Led Trubo (the shroud on the fan is useless and adds the problematic height of 5mm, can't get it off) Thanks.

Which brand will be best for me?
coconut_pie replied to hasanuzzaman's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
tl;dr: If they're all the same just get the one you like most. Quality is pretty much an equal playing field these days for midrange laptops. You say they're all identical, is that with every component or just CPU, GPU, and memory? Check the other specifics such as display resolution and battery capacity. You ought to also check what type of keyboard they have, by this i mean does the laptop have the numberpad or can you live without it. If literally everything is exactly the same, then look at other features you might like such as kensington locks (who even uses these?) and or fingerprint readers. Ports on the side are an important factor for me. I looked for at least 3 USB ports, an SD card reader, an ethernet port, usb-C (mine isn't thunderbolt, sniff), and a HDMI. A good one to look for these days is a thunderbolt 3 enabled USB-C port. Many laptops have the C port, but not the thunderbolt 3 support. Check that if you think you might end up using a thunderbolt 3 device in the future. If they're still the same, then I would recommend you make your final choice on which you like the most. I care very much for aesthetics, if I didn't i could've have bought a similarly powered thinkpad slab to rather than my Dell Inspiron 5580 (the blue is really nice) for less than I paid for the Dell. Quality nowadays is pretty much an equal playing field for mid range and above laptops. If in doubt, go to a local computer store and have a look at the same model laptops (not neccessairly same specs, but same chassis) and figure out which you like most. Expect some flex if you press down just infront of the space bar on modern notebooks. Seemingly nobody except Apple has figured out how to avoid the flex. -
This is the current part list I've put together for now. I may also slap in my current 1TB WD Blue HDD if I decide it isn't about to die but not totally necessary as have 1TB of one drive capacity. Thanks Draconid for that part list, will base mine on it. Totally didn't realise I could buy a used monitor, why didn't that come to mind. Though some Dell monitors are effing gorgeous ngl.

Planning a new build to replace my Phenom II X4 955 and 750ti setup. Budget isn't too big because I need to buy a new monitor as well, that's at least 150 quid. So, the RX590 and Vega 56 are both more or less in the same price range on eBay and gumtree. Not sure which to go with. For CPU I'm probably going with either a 1st or 2nd gen Ryzen 7 or a 2nd or 3rd gen Ryzen 5. Definitely 16GB of RAM minimum, I need the ram for some of my CAD work. The GPU and CPU will be both be used together for rendering in Blender with Cycles. As for games, I'm not an AAA nut really but I plan to play both Forza Horizon 3 and 4 preferably on high to ultra settings, still play JC3 somewhat but not much, also planning to pick up TpF2 later this year, as it's unreleased don't know how much a resource hog it will be but TpF1 was enough to cause problems on my Phenom and 750ti. I also play Beamng drive on low, would like to play on high to ultra settings with dynamic lighting enabled for once, new traffic update will also be pretty resource intensive albeit more on the CPU. My baseline requirements would be to play all the above with the stated quality at 1080p 60fps, I might be able to afford a 1440p monitor though, still, 60fps requirement but more is always nicer. Any opinions and feedback appreciated, will post a PC part picker list once I complete it down in the comments. Budget for the entire PC is about £700 max, will aim to buy most things secondhand except for storage drives.

Not a black edition, as far as I know, it was a stock OEM tray since I got it out of an older desktop computer that a local university was giving away for free. Edit: besides nobody in their right mind would want to overclock this bugger, it used to idle at 50C before I slapped on a Hyper 212, now idles at 30. You'd probably fry the chip. As others have said I'm probably best off selling it as a low end gaming rig with the words "fortnite and minecraft and gtaV" somewhere in the tittle. Probably gonna try Gumtree first then maybe eBay.
-
That's why I asked the post. I know my components are dated and having looked on ebay all the systems have an equal amount of RAM or more, generally faster RAM, more up to date CPUs and 10th gen GPUs, normally 1050s or 1060s all for around $300-400. I'm just trying to get rid of the desktop now before I'd have to pay someone to take it away.
-
I'm planning to sell my desktop setup to pay for a lower end laptop. I'll be going to uni in a year or two so a desktop is really inconvenient, a laptop less so. Don't plan on buying a high-end laptop, again this is only for uni. Gaming isn't really my thing any more. Thinking along the lines of an older ThinkPad with plenty of RAM and a solid quadcore. My desktop is old, specs below. I don't know what would be the best way to sell it. My options are: sell it as a gaming rig sell it as a workstation in its current state sell it as an office computer with a smaller slim case and sell the PSU and GPU separately (they won't fit in a slim case) part it out completely, doubt all parts will sell. Below are the specs of the current machine as is: AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.2GHz - (manufactured in 2010, got plenty of life in it, solid CPU but definitely won't sell as a CPU on its own.) ASUS M4A78-LTM micro atx board - (unlikely to sell on its own, again in good condition.) ASUS GTX750TI - (definitely no market for these things so won't sell on its own, best off inside a desktop I guess) WD Blue 1TB @7200rpm - (it's about 4 years old so going to be on its last legs, I can afford to buy a small low capacity SSD which would be more appropriate if selling as an office computer) Corsair CS450M - (80+ Gold rate, semi-modular. Don't know how long these last but might sell on its own.) Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED Turbo - (got it a few months ago to help with thermal throttling when gaming, basically new.) NZXT H230 Black - (this case is out of production, no side window, sound insulation on panels, the top is lightly scuffed) 4GB DDR3 Corsair XMS3 @1600MHz 2x2 - (is there even a market for this anymore?) 4GB DDR3 Kingston @1600MHz 2x2 - (ditto) 2 Corsair AF120 fans Other components I've got lying around: Antex Minuet Micro-ATX slim case with 350W 80+ Bronze Power supply - (this could fit most of the components except GPU, with an SSD might sell as an office computer, I don't know. Won't really sell on its own, I doubt it) Akasa cooler - (cooler that was on before I changed to the Cooler Master.) Another thing to note, the Hyper 212 will need to be sold on its own as I can't actually fit the side panel on the desktop, it's too tall. So that's that. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get the most money out of these dated components. Parting out might sell some but not most of the components; probably will not sell as a low end gaming rig (maybe some dumb kid buys it but it's by no means flashy looking); could be sold as a workstation with the GPU and HDD (it runs Fusion360 well, runs and renders in blender fairly well with the correct settings); could be sold as an office computer in the small case with an SSD and then the GPU, large case and PSU separate;; Any suggestions? Sorry for the long post.

awful periods of stuttering in many games, possible bottleneck?
coconut_pie replied to coconut_pie's topic in Troubleshooting
I'm just going to go ahead and mark this as solved. We can safely assume that my CPU is throttling. Looked up the specs on my CPU and the listed working temperatures are from 56C- 61C. Yep, so I'm running 30C above maximum when running games, that's not good. I checked the temperature now when I'm simply surfing the web with maybe one or two tabs open and some music in the background and the CPU is already reaching 65C. Time for a new cooler and thermal paste. Thanks again for you help, @Majestic. Appreciate it especially since I've learned quite a few new things I didn't know of before.- 13 replies

awful periods of stuttering in many games, possible bottleneck?
coconut_pie replied to coconut_pie's topic in Troubleshooting
CPU clock is definitely not here. Interesting that my mainboard wasn't specified. Here's what I got out of CPU-Z. I'll give replacing the cooler a try with some new thermal paste too. Not even sure how old this cooler I have is, i've cleaned it but it's at least 6 if not maximum 9 years old (assuming it's the original). Assuming I can fit a 212 Evo on my board which is in my pricerange for coolers, would that be a good replacement? If that doesn't work it might just be time for me to replace this dying CPU which won't be the easiest since my budget is tight. Anyway if there is nothing else that you might gain from this data then I thank you for your help, never even heard of CPU throttling before. Gotta look into that some more now.- 13 replies

there doesn't seem to be a "CPU clock" in the graph list. There is an overall "CPU usage" though but that isn't the right thing. Though i think i might be able to add CPU temperature and CPU voltage if those would be of any help- 13 replies

@Majestic I've updated the original post with the data you wanted. The Vsync solution did not work at all. I tried off, on, and smart. (the screen tearing was pretty bad too) Just one thing, CPU clock speed wasn't available in the monitoring tab in settings.- 13 replies

coconut_pie replied to coconut_pie's topic in Troubleshooting
Windows 10 version 1803 64-bit home premium, i use Sophos antivirus, though why should that have much of an effect. I've looked at its processes in task manager and it barely uses up anything. Give me some time and I'll update the original post with some extra data as suggested by Majestic's topic. Though i did just go and check task manager and found a program running in the background that i never heard of definitely never consciously installed. It's going by the name of "Measuring.online" and is gobling up around 25% of my CPU even when nothing else is running in the foreground. I'll go about uninstalling that first, retest my games and then if need be get the extra data. One last thing, what would make a complete refresh of the operating system improve system performance? I've defragmented the HDD quite recently.- 13 replies

GTA used to run at the 25fps i wanted on medium settings, sturrering only started recently. Forza horizon is the same, it runs at 25fps and then randomly stutters returning back to normal a minute later. I've played and know that the games work fine, it's just that this suttering with a CPU usage spike and GPU usage drop happens in every game I play.- 13 replies

So I've had this issue with random periods of stuttering for around a year or two now. The problem is that whenever I'm playing a game, pretty much ANY game, I get periods of stuttering that make the game unplayable for a short amount of time. these periods happen at more or less random intervals. During normal operation I get an average (across all games) framerate between 25 and 30fps which for me is good enough, I can play comfortably at this framerate even if it seems unplayable to you. During abnormal operation, during a period of stuttering, the perceived framerate will drop down to around 6fps+-3 (according to the MSI afterburner graphs that's a bit different, the framerate spikes up and down between 0 and ~150); that framerate is once and for all absolutely unplayable. My system information: Running data from MSI afterburner is attached. The problem occurred 7 times as shown clearly with the GPU usage graph, looking at this CPU usage didn't seem to spike too much during stutter periods. The drop of framerate and GPU usage and a lot of the other graphs at the very end is when the game was closed. The game I tested with was BeamngDrive set to the default "Normal" setting for graphics. The PC has been reset completely last night. I've installed a couple programs today already but mainly programs such as blender, fusion360 and a couple of extra drivers. BeamngDrive is currently the only game on my system. Antivirus is not yet installed so that won't be something that could cause the issues (will be isntalled soon though) Games that often have stuttering: BeamnNG Drive, GTA V, Just Cause 3, Transport Fever, Train Simulator 2016, CS-GO, Cities Skylines, Forza Horizon 3, Subnautica, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Car Mechanic Simulator 2015, Rolling Line. Games that never have stuttering: Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Minesweeper. HardwareMonitoring.hml
