paddy-stone reacted to LAwLz in Google Updates Android Ad Policy - Bans Ads Before Levels in Games, and More!
    Summary

Google has just Updated their Google Play Developer Policy. The headline of this update is what Google calls the "Better Ads Experiences". The aim is to ban certain types of bad or annoying ads that are present in some mobile apps.
The update will go into effect september 30, 2022 which leaves developers with about 2 months to update the way they present ads to users. The updated guidelines are inspired by the Coalition for Better Ads (which Google is a part of) which has posted their own guidelines for how they feel ads in mobile apps should behave.

Examples of ads that are no longer allowed according to the new policy:
Showing an ad when a user starts a new level in a game.  A video ad that shows up before a loading screen (splash screen). Ads that can't be skipped after 15+ seconds. This does NOT apply to optional ads such as "reward ads" that users choose to view themselves. Those can still be longer than 15 seconds. Full screen ads that shows up unexpectedly. For example an ad that appears while reading a text.
Examples of these types of ads are shown in the quotes below:

    My thoughts
Sounds like a very good thing to me. There are A LOT of terrible apps out there that pretty much only exists to deliver as many ads as possible to users. Those types of apps heavily rely on these tricks and I think it is a good thing to put an end to it.
I am not sure if Microsoft and Apple have similar guidelines but if they don't then I think they should adopt it.

paddy-stone reacted to Spotty in Tesla locked a customer's car out of 1/3 of its battery capacity for a $4.5k ransom
If a surgeon accidentally leaves their Rolex wristwatch inside a patient, do you believe the patient should have to pay for the watch?

The Tesla tech that installed the 90 battery maybe should have locked it to 60 when they installed it (though, installing things and then artificially locking them out is a whole other issue, see BMW's heated seats discussion), but they didn't. Tesla's technician screwed up and Tesla failed to rectify the issue until years later after the car had been sold twice. If it was the original owner and a week after installing the new battery they contacted the owner and said "Hey, there was an error made during your battery swap that unintentionally unlocked additional battery capacity. We've pushed a software update to fix then mistake" then that would be more reasonable and maybe you could argue Tesla's case. Maybe the original owner should have reported the mistake to Tesla, though you also can't expect a layperson to understand and identify the error.

Modifying somebody's car without their consent because they screwed up a repair years earlier when a different person owned the car is bullshit. Tesla should have at least contacted the current owner and got their approval to modify the vehicle before making any changes to the vehicle. The customer could just say "no, I don't agree" and Tesla wouldn't really have any way to force a customer to agree, they'd maybe only be able to state that without agreeing to the modifications the battery wouldn't be covered by warranty or something - but since the car is a few years old and on its 3rd owner I doubt Tesla is providing any warranty on it anyway.

The only reason this is a discussion is because even after the car has been sold multiple times and years after it was sold Tesla still has significant control over the vehicle and can make changes to the car remotely via the internet. I'm sure there would be no debate if this was a conventional vehicle and the manufacturer just showed up at their house and towed the vehicle away to take it to a mechanic to make fundamental changes to it without the owners consent - whether they were fixing their mistake or not. Look at safety recalls for example. The manufacturer can't just show up at your house, tow your car away and make the changes. Even if it's a safety recall they still need your consent to make the repairs. Why should it be any different for Tesla fixing their mistake?

On the note of consent for making changes to an owner's vehicle, if Tesla had accidentally locked a 90kwh model to 60kwh I still believe they should contact the owner and ask for their consent to fix their mistake before making any changes to the vehicle.

It appears the previous owner wasn't the one who had the battery swapped. From the Twitter thread in the source article it appears it was the first owner who had a new battery installed under warranty. The person who had their car remotely altered by Tesla is the car's third owner. That would mean for the entire time the previous owner (2nd owner) owned the car it functioned as a 90 model. The previous owner might not have even been aware the battery was swapped.

When you mention "backup to NAS", is that an image of your PC, or all relevant files?  if relevant files, I would and Do it much more often, like daily. But for me that means any new files I've gotten from nzb  etc for example, these are backed up to my NAS daily, and my NAS gets backed up weekly to my backup server and Rpi.

My Rpi is basically OMV and running things like plex server, and a few other things, so that my main pc only has to be on when I am actively using it, saving me electricity. It also mean my PC can be much more streamlined. I am in the process of upgrading my PC to 11400f right now, and only gonna run essential software on it, everything else can be either run on the pi 24/7, or used on one of my other laptops/pcs if it's being tested first for example.

    no need automated process.

What do you want to do on it? that might give us some scope for trying to help.

    Eg running dockers.

I personally am using an Rpi 2GB with armbian and OMV.... It runs really well, I am using a 5TB USB 3.0 drive for storage, and running the OS on microSD (OMV has some settings for not blasting the flash cards and killing them). Have got plex and a few NZB dockers running on there, and trying others on there too... I'm impressed with how well everything runs on there.
I am waiting for the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W to come back in stock, or newer model if stock continues to be a problem for longer than I hope.

Here's my dashboard of OMV, it's idle at the moment as I am not actively using plex or anything, but the dockers are still running and ready.

I'm using just over half of the memory, and using dockers for what I need is a great way of keeping that memory usage down.

As long as the power button pins are in-tact, you're good enough to use it.  (LEDs and stuff are nice to have, but if that doesn't work, it doesn't break the system or anything.)

Not true, Windows media creation tool leaves the remaining space untouched and doesn't format or partition the drive aside from converting to NTFS (and of course wiping it before starting).

You'll be fine. iPhones (and androids too) are very much "sandboxed". With iPhones specifically, you have to give permissions to any type of access to your device explicitly. Even if you did hit "accept" to allow them to collect data, it's not going to scrub your phone and take your data. It would however start collecting your browser data and usage if you were to continue using the Turbo VPN, but only while using the VPN.

I'd just uninstall and call it a day, nothing to be concerned about.

As member of a company that has hired quite a bunch of Indian remote support - HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

    HA!!

You sometimes get lucky and get a couple people that do a decent job, but most of the time their performance is... lackluster, to say the least. And in fact, some of the IT areas that hired in India have started to also increase their members in our own country because of all the issues they're having with their Indian colleagues.

Long story short, you get what you pay for. And if you pay peanuts, you hire monkeys.

Note: I am not saying Indians are in general bad workers, or anything along those lines. But you can't expect people to be paid wages that in many 1st world countries would be considered "below poverty line" and expect them to perform well. Odds are they don't give two shits about the job because why should they when they're being paid literal scraps.

The thing is that many companies are demanding that everyone return, regardless of whether their job requires/improves by being on site or not.
99% of my job is through a web browser, Teams, Outlook and a handful of remotely controlled VMs. What the hell do I, or the company, gain by me being on site?!

I am the opposite. I hate being at the office. I would love 100% WFH, as that would also enable me to basically live wherever I damn well please, without being tied to a specific location because of my job.
Plus, I'm an introvert and somewhat antisocial, so... yeah. Gimme.

paddy-stone reacted to Monkey Dust in Elon Musk tells Tesla workers to return to the office full time or resign
With a tight labour market, employers often don't have an option. And from the employer's perspective, a shift to hybrid working, or fully remote for many roles, allows them to reduce office space, which in most places is really expensive. Reducing other office overheads, such and energy use and cleaning, too. It allows them to recruit from a larger geographic area, only expect the employee to come in once a week, a much longer commute becomes acceptable. And for start-ups, you can avoid renting an office at all, only renting space on an ad-hoc basis for in person meetings.

Outsourcing to India has been possible for years. A lot of work has been offshored, and then re-shored. It's not as cheap as it once was, you lose a lot of control and oversight, and If things go wrong your options for putting it right are limited. If you want it to work well, you need to open your own office there. If it was that straight forward, it would have happened already.

And what’s wrong with the guy 'signing your check' working remotely? Payroll is a finance function, they work really well remotely. There are a lot of 'old school' bosses who believe that unseen employees are doing nothing and seen ones are doing something productive. At the very least, they are seriously underestimating how much time people can waste in the office. Remember the pre-internet, Pre-memes-being-called-memes, meme of 'Meetings, the practical alternative to work!'?

There are benefits to being in the office, but you don't need to be in 5 days a week to get them. Spending 1 or 2, possibly more, hours (of entirely unproductive time) a day commuting entirely for the sake of presenteeism is plain stupid. It causes a huge amount of pollution, as well as traffic congestion. The congestion making other sectors of the economy which rely on the road network less productive.

To me the customer would always come first, seeing as they are the ones parting with their cash for whatever your company is offering. They should instead look at how much managers are making that are driving the train off the tracks.. salaries should be commensurate with how well the company is doing. Not pay the managers big bucks and then go "oh no, we;re not making enough money, let's put the prices up again so that next year the CEO can pay for his mistress to have that new house in the Cayman islands, so she can dive into all the gold like scrooge mcduck"

Random strings with Characters, Symbols, long length will always be better than phrases.

I would love to have a pitbull, they are such lovely dogs... it's the bad owners that give dogs a bad name, they need to be disciplined when appropriate, same as you would your kids... except dogs learn faster what is NOT allowed. I saw this post and my heart breaks all over again. This was my Merry! (LOTR reference) got him when he was a pup and for 9 months, he was the best dog I could've ever asked for and was my first dog since I've been living on my own. His health had a very sudden decline and I had no choice but to let my baby boy go.

The diagnosis came out to be that he had a disease that basically eats at his nervous system and he was now completely paralyzed and he couldn't even use the restroom. A part of me doesn't believe that! He was such an active boy and showed no signs if any health issues. Personally, I think a neighbor fed him something that basically shut his body down and I was told something different because they knew I would burn every house on the block down if I found that to be true. But, i miss my buddy and things just aren't the same without him. Dont think I'll ever own another dog, because I've already the best boi in the world!
