You could use cpu-z instead: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Not necessarily. For example, Skylake was able to use either DDR3 or DDR4 depending on the motherboard.

The really big problem I have here is that it's almost impossible to criticise Apple without sounding like you're ragging on them. They've hidden, or not released so much information that everyone is flying blind. Those who trust and like Apple are making claims before investigation, those who are in the middle are baffled by the lack of information, and those who hate Apple are using the lack of info to condemn them.

For those moaning about the footnotes on the Apple website, sorry but they still tell us next to nothing about the clock speeds or even how they handle real world use cases. What they tell us is how good the new devices are against old Apple devices. That's it. With Zen 3 and whatever intel come up with next, or for a more direct comparison, what Qualcomm come up with next they are making some very big claims. Big enough that if I see them advertise in this way in the UK, I'll be putting in an Advertising Standards Authority complaint. You don't get to make claims without the evidence. We haven't seen the evidence yet. Even Apple haven't tested like for like (ARM vs ARM for example) according to their footnotes. Note that they don't define what the 'highest performing notebook' processor is, which I believe is the script writer's point. Note too that they state it's against whatever was commercially available. That's even before we talk about the term notebook and how it's been defined here? It's entirely possible that they're only looking at Chromebooks or HP Stream like devices. In which case we all know that's not a like for like comparison. It's even more deceptive a strategy as people who compare Threadripper with i9s and then claim TR comes off more expensive (ought TR not be compared to Xeon?). I digress though. They're hiding more information that they're sharing. This all stinks of the typical 'Apple Magic' thing (our devices are great because we do something we're going to keep secret so that you believe that there's nothing that could possibly compare because we're so special).

Aside from the drama over the actual capability of these devices, my main concern is over software development. I am baffled that Apple would take such a big risk. What if Abode code their products for Apple Silicon, but their software takes a performance hit because of it? What I don't understand is why the heck they'd take the risk that those developers who code only for MacOS, will continue to do so. Lighting, sound and automation at many event venues are often done by Macs from what I understand. I don't quite understand why when I've always had more success with Linux or Windows software for this purpose. With the events industry hit so hard though, who is going to be buying more licences for new software developed specifically for Apple Silicon devices? Even with Rosetta, it seems like a bad business decision. Or is this Apple realising that they're going to lose the professional users sooner or later and so getting out ahead of the curve and developing for the prosumer market who aren't sat there counting the minutes it takes to render video?

Now you are just making up things about what a personal computer is.

"A personal computer is a multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it feasible for individual use. Personal computers are intended to be operated directly by an end user, rather than by a computer expert or technician."

If these AS macs aren't personal computers then there is no such thing as a personal computer.

These Macs might not suit your needs, but currently you are just ranting because change is scary.

TheSLSAMG reacted to VeganJoy in What are some good keyboards for gaming?
indeed, if you get a generic gaming keyboard it'll likely be fine, just like most people wouldnt be able to tell the difference between a decent prebuilt and a custom built pc performance and usage wise because in the end both are computers that get the job done. these companies making gamer keyboards are saddled with developing a wide variety of other products though; corsair makes power supplies, mice, headsets, aio coolers, computer cases, prebuilt pcs, custom watercooling components, ram, ssds, chairs, and rgb puke, and somewhere in there theyve also got keyboards. do you wanna spend 200-300 bucks on a keyboard from a company that makes a very wide variety of decent products or from a company that literally makes nothing but keyboards/keyboard components?

that being said, i have a corsair k95 and its a good keyboard, does everything i want it to do. i got it for 90 bucks and wouldnt spend more than 100 on it, but for that price its pretty good. compared to my buddy's ducky the build quality is clearly lesser but not by a significant amount. being a less mainstream product, his ducky has one or two obscure issues with connectivity every once in a while, which is just a side effect of being made by a much smaller company that probably doesnt have the resources for dealing with little issues in a timely manner. still a fine keyboard and there are many boutique keebs like it.

all in all, it depends on what youre looking for. if you just want something that works, go ahead and get the corsair. it's certainly not bad, its just not as good as a custom keyboard of the same price, just like buying a prebuilt pc versus building it yourself.

The GMMK is a keyboard that is either pre-built or barebones made by PC Gaming Race. If you want something plug and play though, that's totally fair.

It's a great keyboard as far as reviews indicate though enthusiasts will probably disagree. If you go that route, there are two versions. MX Speed switches are similar to Cherry MX Reds but with a higher actuation point. There is an optical-mechanical version too which on average should be more reliable/durable to prolonged use than the Cherry MX Speed variant.

TheSLSAMG got a reaction from Meganter in What are some good keyboards for gaming?
Most people prefer linear switches for gaming from what I've seen but go for whatever you prefer. At that budget, I'd suggest building your own but that's nearly impossible on Amazon because a lot of the parts are niche.

I like this choice personally. I have a GMMK Compact with Kailh Box Jade switches (kind of similar to MX Blue/Green) and Razer PBT Doubleshot keycaps and I really enjoy it so far. Amazon doesn't have the barebones models except for the Compact, so everything else they have is fully built. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D8YNJH0/

If you like the 60% class layouts, there's also the Drop ALT which is a 65% and various GK61 barebones kits. All of these are wired. The nice thing about all of these options is if you experience issues such as double-typing or bad switches, they're super easy to swap out.

Yeah. I'm going PlayStation just because of the exclusives (and also because the controller looks and sounds great imo). As a predominantly PC gamer there's just not much point going Xbox for me when just about all their exclusives going forward will be coming to the PC, too. That said what MS are doing with GamePass is terrific, especially the bundling together of a console, GamePass, and Live Gold for a really reasonable monthly fee. It's gonna make next-gen much more accessible for a lot of people than has traditionally been the case - even for the full-fat Series X.

We should maybe get back to the topic, though.

As much as I'm full into PC at this point, the Xbox Series S does look pretty compelling given the price/performance. Maybe if Forza and other Xbox titles I'm interested in were still exclusive, I'd bother. I tried just for shits to preorder the PS5, but Best Buy was a complete mess of a site and I never saw the preorder button.

You can try, anyway. I've been trying to preorder the PS5 since day one; Amazon here in the UK sold out of its first batch in ~40 mins, and any other time a store or site's got more stock availability, it's gone in minutes. I don't expect I'll be able to get one at launch now.

TheSLSAMG reacted to straight_stewie in Petition to stop Nvidia acquiring ARM
    That makes no sense whatsoever.

A business is designed to make money. They way to make money from owning ARM is to sell the IP to as many people as possible.

For 40 BILLION dollars, Nvidia has no plans whatsoever to damage ARM or restrict who is buying it's products (outside of the restrictions required by ITAR, anyway. But that's just things like "don't sell computers and weapons to Iran and North Korea"...). At that cost they DESPERATELY need it to keep producing as much profit as possible. Considering that ARM generates roughly only about 2 billion dollars a year, Nvidia needs it to keep producing them profit at the same or greater rate for 20 years to pay off the acquisition.

Also, just another consideration. Nvidia is buying ARM from SoftBank. An investment company who's only technology holding was 24% of T-Mobile, and who only bought ARM to flip the company to make money. They had to exit ARM early because they made some very terrible investments and started hemorrhaging money. At least Nvidia has proven that they can run a business that makes computer processors, and run it well.

On the other hand having a Five Eyes founder controlling ARM is basically handing them everything on a silver platter. Imagine every phone processor having an encryption "back door" (something which five eyes actually admits they want. Just this year there have been 2 bills introduced to the US congress and one new law that the European governments were talking about that would have done just this). Seriously. Having a Five Eyes government controlling ARM is the biggest cyber security mistake we could make.

Hi there everyone, i just made a petition on the UK government website with the aim to stop the sale of ARM to Nvidia and maybe prompt the government to buy ARM to maintain its neutrality.
If you are a UK citizen or live in the UK you are allowed to sign this petition, If you agree with my aims please sign as if enough signatures are collected it will be discussed by the government.

    My petition:
Intervene with the acquisition of ARM by Nvidia and make ARM state run.

Nvidia plans to buy ARM (a semiconductor chip designing company) based here in the UK. This would give Nvidia unprecedented control over technologies licensed out to almost every tech company on the planet consisting of Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, Amazon and many more. The acquisition could lead to market manipulation and a monopoly. Almost every mobile device contains ARM technology in it so it is crucial that ARM remains a neutral company to ensure continued innovation.
