TheSLSAMG reacted to WhitetailAni in What is this for I’m building in the 5000x series from Corsair this leads up into the front i o but I don’t know where to plug it in
It's your front USB-C connector. What motherboard do you have? Not all motherboards have one yet.

That could be a worthy upgrade.

TheSLSAMG reacted to heli1337 in Is it worth upgrading from Xeon X5450 to i7-3770K?
It depends on how many you will pay for it.
Many people sell sets like this for price that is not worth to buy.

TheSLSAMG reacted to WkdPaul in TPMpocalypse; Microsoft singlehandedly destroys the TPM market
Not sure I understand the craze ; Windows 11 isn't necessary for the moment and if you really need Windows 11, wait until it's out, by that time you might get an upgrade that make your computer compatible, and if not, just wait it out and see if it's really worth it or not since Windows 10 is still supported until 2025 !!!
This is similar to the TP or fuel hoarding ... panic buying is dumb.

Just buy it and sell the 1660? you'll easily get what you paid for it back.

TheSLSAMG got a reaction from Kanna in Does the AMD Wraith Prism work on X570 boards with a ryzen 5 3600
The Wraith Prism uses the two plastic mounting clips that are preinstalled on your motherboard out of the box. So if you took those off to install the Wraith Stealth that came with your Ryzen 5 3600, you need to reinstall them. Otherwise, it will work just fine.

TheSLSAMG reacted to Chris Pratt in CPU Suggestions: $1400 Budget For The PC
For AMD, I'd go with a 3700X or 5800X. The 5800X is the better option with higher clocks and IPC, but it's also more expensive. Something like a 3600 or 5600X are also good options for gaming, but 6 cores is probably going to be limiting for gaming within the next year or two.

TheSLSAMG reacted to dizmo in Has anyone purchased a PCIe USB expansion card?
Yup that's what I meant. What are the internal USB ports for? I've always wondered.
Yeah, they all seem to have that. Some even have SATA for data...which I found odd. It just uses the PCI slot as a holding point.
You know, I was thinking the same thing until I saw some that didn't even use PCIe (despite being labelled as such) and actually use SATA for data transfer. Not that it'd likely matter for what I'm plugging into it, but still. Some also don't have power needed, which I found odd. You're right about the WiFi though, there's loads of Chinese companies putting out adapters almost identical to those from the major brands and it's just Intel's chip on a PCB under a heat shield. I'd love to see a shootout between them.
A card that adds USB ports to the PC, preferably PCIe based not a hub. The motherboard only has 4 and it's not nearly enough.
That was actually one I was looking at, being in Canada there aren't too many (decent) options. Currently ordering a load of stuff from eBay through the US, and managed to snag one of these for $10. Good to know, thanks!
Good to know! Looks like it might be one of those "they'll all basically work" scenarios.
Yeah, drivers are something that I'd been worried about. I've seen reviews on some saying they have very poor support and as a result, the transfer rates are abysmal. Not that it would reeeeally matter, as it'd be printers and mice likely plugged into it, but still. I'm surprised Asus and similar companies haven't even bothered putting something like this out, aside from a couple of cards that only have 2 ports.

TheSLSAMG got a reaction from dizmo in Has anyone purchased a PCIe USB expansion card?
I have one of these and I have no complaints. I don't use it a ton but when I need it, it works great. I've used it for my Oculus Rift and sensors as well as for USB 3.0 external drive file transfers on my old X58 system and my AMD A78 system. They also make a version with an internal USB header instead of the extra 2 USB ports. The only thing I'm not in love with is it using SATA for power, but it works fine.
EDIT: Not sure if this is what you meant. If you don't mean this, disregard.

TheSLSAMG reacted to Stahlmann in Should I Take NVIDIA Back?
This won't change anything for the better. It will only make things worse for people who still wait for their 3080 and 3070 because the chips that could have gone into these cards will now go into the Ti variants, leaving customer hanging.
They just release new stuff without fulfilling orders from 9 months (!) ago...
As Hardware Unboxed said: "Shameless cash grab". And i fully agree.
I'm surprised they even put a price on these. For all we know, everyone will sell it for 200% or more anyway.

TheSLSAMG reacted to RejZoR in Sabrent Plot Ripper SSD
Not really. Despite this, once this "storage" mining stops, you'll have bunch of badly worn drives on sale as second hand products. Also you won't be able to buy one new when this crap goes full swing. For now Chia doesn't seem to be same rage as Ethereum or Bitcoin. And luckily upgrading storage isn't as necessary as graphic cards that get old much faster. I mean Is till have Samsung 850 Pro 2TB that I bought maaaaaany years ago (7 years I believe?) and it's serving me just the same as day 1. It's still as fast it's still huge by all metrics even today.
-
TheSLSAMG reacted to leadeater in Sabrent Plot Ripper SSD
Yep, unlike GPUs that other than fans don't actually wear like many think SSDs do so Chia means you will have no resell value as it's very highly it'll die anyway before you sell it and anyone that cares to ask for a SMART readout would run for the hills once they see it.

TheSLSAMG reacted to Boyohan in Birthday gift for my nephew - now finished
My brother asked me for help in building a PC for his sons 12th birthday this summer.
The budget was 1000eur.
I had about 3 months to plan all my purchases which wasn't a bad idea considering the delivery time of some parts.
Because I had so long time to acquire all parts I managed to get the SSD, PSU, RAM and Case at a discount.
So I saved a little bit of money and I also got a better PSU (650W instead of the planned 550W).
We will complete the build in a couple of weeks and I plan to include my nephew when building the PC.
That way he will be able to tell his friends that built his first PC by himself (assisted by me).
Full spec:
CPU: i5 11400
MB: ASUS TUF GAMING B560-PLUS (WiFi)
GPU: ASUS RTX 2060
PSU: CX650F RGB (+80 Bronze)
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance 8gb 3200mhz
SSD: Kingston A2000 500gb
Cooler: Pure Rock 2
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300
I got a good deal for the GPU, 440eur which by todays market isn't bad for a RTX 2060.

TheSLSAMG reacted to RejZoR in Controversial Sci-Hub Boss: "Apple sent my data to the FBI"
Everyone makes clickbait titles making it seem like Apple covertly did it behind everyone's backs, just handing over user data left and right.
There is legal process involved to user data disclosure in which legal teams from company can deny it or object it, within the applicable laws in country/state where it is being requested. Sometimes they can deny the request or object it, but there are a lot of cases where they simply have to hand over the information if request is justifiable or provided with enough evidence to support such request for data is meaningful and applicable.
https://www.apple.com/legal/transparency/
Most companies run transparency reports with this sort of information, including for US region. They obviously don't just hand over anything and everything the moment anyone requests anything. It's not how any of it works. There is clear legal stuff involved. And because it's US citizen from the looks of it, it applies to US laws. ProtonMail for example, being their user it subjects your privacy to Swiss laws. And they often reject data requests. But they also allow some. What useful law enforcement gets from it is also another thing. There are things that even Apple encrypts to a point it can't be decrypted. Which is often a highlight of ProtonMail as most data they have to hand over is useless anyway because of the way how they operate.

TheSLSAMG reacted to captain_to_fire in Controversial Sci-Hub Boss: "Apple sent my data to the FBI"
They already have a response, it's available for years already https://www.apple.com/legal/transparency/about.html
This is not something exclusive to Apple. Complying to government and law enforcement requests is also done by Google, Microsoft, and other tech companies. Basically, anything stored in iCloud can be unlocked by Apple on demand and if there is indeed a valid search warrant or probable cause, they can hand over that to the law enforcement people. That is what Apple offered to FBI to aid investigation by showing the iCloud contents. What Apple can't do is unlock and decrypt anything stored offline should it be powered off, unless they make an iOS version with the security features disabled, something they denied the FBI.
The screenshot might be legit but it could actually contain nothing to incriminate the suspect, or could cause more legal troubles.

TheSLSAMG reacted to Kilrah in ASRock Launches Legacy M.2 Graphics Card
It will not do any better than an iGPU, actually much worse, it has no 3D acceleration whatsoever.
It just provides an absolutely basic display output for 2D stuff if you have none, that's all.

If you want to run it at 16x, put it in PCIEX16_1.

TheSLSAMG got a reaction from WhitetailAni in 3070 Running at 8x instead of 16x
The slot is physically X16 but is wired as X8, so you cannot get any more than X8 bandwidth out of it.
