  1. I have decided to buy an i7 laptop and after hours and hours of research, I am now choosing between the Lenovo Ideapad 700 and the more gaming oriented Ideapad Y700. The price in my region is basically the same, the Y700 is only 4% more expensive, so the price doesn't play a role here. I don't want to hear that I should get the Y700 because of the better graphics card, bigger battery or better speakers. I don't care about any of those things. If you own or have used any of these laptops, I would really appreciate your opinions about: - keyboard - build quality - screen quality - any issues you may have experienced
  2. Yes, the business laptops are a lot more expensive, so I'm still deciding between the 700 and Y700. Any other laptops I should take a look at?
  3. I'm choosing a new laptop and would love to get some advice/suggestions/opinions. I'll try to keep this short and simple, so here are the bullet points.. Price range: $800 - $1000 (USD) It's a little tricky since prices in my region can differ from the US prices, but this should cover it. What will I use it for: I'm a programmer. I focus mainly on mobile development and so I need to be able to comfortably run an emulator. A typical workload would mean the following applications are running: two IDEs, one instance of 1GB RAM VM (emulator), 10 tabs in Chrome, Spotify and a couple of instances of TotalCommander/Explorer. I want to be able to connect it to an external monitor (1440p or even 4K) over HDMI or DP. I will not be gaming on this laptop. As for other requirements, a Full-HD screen is a must, I don't care about color accuracy, but it should have decent viewing angles. I also need fast storage, an SSD is a must. I don't, however, need much storage space. A 120GB SSD + like 250GB HDD or even a single 240GB SSD would be more than enough space for me. Last thing is the keyboard. I know I can't expect much from a laptop keyboard, but I want to select the best one for me. I don't have much experience with laptop keyboards, so I would love to hear your opinions here, though I realize they will be subjective. Summary of my own research: I decided that I should probably get the best possible processor in this price range. That's the i7-6700HQ. This eliminates the option of small form-factor aluminium laptops (or ultrabooks) which use the U-series dual core chips. Even though I don't intent to game on this laptop at all, I think that I need one with a dedicated GPU since I want the option of connecting a 4K monitor. I know for a fact that integrated graphics on i5 and i7 Haswell desktop chips have trouble handling dual 1440p panels, stuttering when resizing/moving complex apps or choppy animations when switching desktops in Windows 10. I am not sure, however, how integrated graphics compare on deskop vs. mobile processors. My selection: Lenovo Ideapad 700 w/ i7-6700HQ, GTX 950M, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD and 8GB of RAM. Would you suggest another laptop that fits my requirements? How does the Ideapad 700 compare to the more gaming oriented Y700 (The price here is almost the same)?\ Any suggestions and opinions are highly appreciated. Thanks
  4. Hi, this particular GPU is selling for quite a low price in shops in my country at the moment. https://www.asus.com/uk/Graphics-Cards/GTX950-M-2GD5/overview/ Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it loud, does it heat up a lot, how much can it be overclocked? How does it compare to larger GTX950 cards? I don't really care about the small size, I can fit most graphics cards in my tower, but this card is about 15% cheaper than the next GTX950 at the moment. Thanks
  5. Thank you for you suggestions guys. I decided to go for the 1440p display because of the vertical space. I found a 27" for only a bit more money and now there is a Benq GW2765HT sitting on my desk. I've been using it for 8 hours and I like it - there is just so much more space now, I can focus most of my work on one monitor. I actually went to take a look at an ultrawide monitor to a store and when I saw how short it was (both actual vertical size and pixels), I knew I had to go with the 1440p 16:9. I might buy an ultrawide later, but if I do, it will be 3440x1440 resolution.
  6. I just bought the Benq GW2765HT and it works fine with my onboard intel 4600 at 1440p@60Hz over HDMI. I used DVI to connect my second monitor. Everything works well when using "normally" but when I try to play 1440p video at 60fps and also do something on the other monitor, it does stutter every now and then. It's not a huge deal, but I will definitely be looking to buy a dedicated GPU. I found a fairly cheap used HD 7770 with two mini DisplayPorts. Will that be able to support a 1440p and 4k displays at 60Hz if I decide to upgrade my 1080p monitor to 4k? Remember, no gaming
  7. Will any GPU with a DisplayPort work for me? What about something like HD7770?
  8. After some research and help from this forum (thanks guys ) I decided to buy a 1440p monitor (probably the Dell U2515H). I will be running a dual monitor setup, 1440p and 1080p displays. Since I don't do any gaming, I was perfectly fine with my onboard graphics Intel 4600 so far. My question is, will intel 4600 suport my 1440p and 1080p displays? My motherboard is a Gigabyte H81M-S2H that only has HDMI (v1.4a) and DVI. No DisplayPort. Can I use HDMI fo the 1440p 60Hz panel and DVI for 1080p with no trouble, or do I need to get a cheap dedicated GPU? If so, which GPU would you recommend? Thanks
  9. Hi, I need and affordable graphics card that can support dual UHD (3840x2160) monitors at 60hz. I don't care about gaming at all, I just need the card to run these highres monitors in desktop without any hiccups. Right now, I am just using onboard Intel 4600 graphics for two FullHD displays. Can you recommend something? Thanks
  10. If we consider a 27" 1440p 16:9 panel instead of a 25" for comparison, the PPI difference against my current 22" 1080p is 8PPI higher for the 1440p and 5PPI lower for the ultrawide. I don't think that's too much of a difference, or is it? I realise that buying the 29" ultrawide is basically extending a 23" 1080p 16:9 by 33% horizontally. Only one 1080p monitor is definitely not enough, but I will still have my 22" 1080p next to whatever monitor I decide to buy. Most articles I read simply compare ultrawide panels with dual monitor setups, but that is not at all my case.
  11. Hi. I am currently running a dual monitor setup with an old 20" 1680x1050 display and a 22" FHD, both TN panels, and I want to replace the 20" with something new. I am a student and computer programmer so I work with a lot of code, documents and spreadsheets. I watch movies on my computer, but I don't care about gaming. My budget is roughly $350. After a lot of research, I have ended up with basically two options: - 25" 1440p 16:9 display - should give me more screen real estate and a slightly higher ppi without the need for scaling (I'm making all comparisons against my 22" FHD) (Dell U2515H or something similar) - 29" 1080p 21:9 display - this ultrawide option will give me a lot more horizontal space but won't improve vertical space and the ppi will actually be a bit lower (LG 29UM67-P or something similar) I think I should be able to comfortably place 3 text files next to each other on the ultrawide panel. That is something very useful for me. But I am afraid that the 1080p resolution won't be enough on this display size, especially when talking about vertical space. However, if I were to say that I don't have enough vertical space, the 25" 16:9 doesn't really solve the problem either. To complicate this a bit more, I plan on upgrading my other monitor in a few months when I move and get a much bigger desk. This means that I could potentially place a monitor vertically next to my ultrawide and have the best of both worlds. So, if you are a programmer or work with docs or spreadsheets and have experience with these kinds of displays, I would appreciate your feedback. What do you and what don't you like about them? Or would you recommend something else for me? Thanks a lot
