  1. That Japanese Pine wood headphones looks good.
  2. Good idea I should check out craigslist for cheap TB drives. I'll double check on that and true SSDs are cheaper now especially the 128GB drive. Maybe Ill do a 10 drive with 1 SSD cashe and 1 SSD of FreeNas. Thank for you advice and ideas. I will do more research.
  3. Alright so I did some research this guy in the freenas fourm put this ZFS allows for a zpool to expand in only two ways. Option 1: Replace all of the hard disks in a VDev with larger hard drives (aka autoexpand) Option 2: Add additional VDevs. Since I am looking for future expansion this is my plan Parts Intel Avoton server board either the 4 core or 8 core 650 PSU 16 GB ECC Memory 11x 1 TB WD RED (RAIDZ3) 1x 128 SSD Cashe 16GB 3.0 USB for FreeNAS OS The reason why I am going with 1 TB is to fill up all the SATA Ports on the motherboard because I CANNOT add any physical hard drives when the vdev is created. The way I am going to expand my capacity is upgrading the drive to larger drives like 4 TB or 6 TB. I do not want to do option 2 which is erase the vdev pool and making a new one with the addition drives. What do you guys think of this plan I am doing. Kinda overkill but I will think this is a great plan when I need to add more storage to my nas.
  4. Wow you got some deals. I just looked at craigslist and found some server racks and I am going to see if I can get some deals from them. Also on amazon I saw this http://www.amazon.com/5-25-Inch-3-5-Inch-Server-Chassis-RPC-450/dp/B001NO0S1S/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1445309703&sr=1-1&keywords=12+bay+rack+mount This looks like a good deal. If I do go with a rack mount system will the parts you recommend will be compatible with the server chassis? If not, can you list the parts I should get for it. If I can't go with the server rack system I will get the recommend parts you listed for a regular case build nas. And thank you for all the information and advice. You are very helpful
  5. A rack mount chassis would be nice but I don't have money for a rack itself and I dont have room for a rack system (I live with my parents, Hawaii is expensive lol). I am kinda on a budget so I will go with a regular case. I prefer a small form factor but if its to cheaper to build a normal/big form factor size nas I would be fine with it. Idk how many drives I should start with lol. But I know I want future expansion. I am thinking at least 4,5, or 6 drives so I have some drives for parity. What is a good raid for me? (I will mainly store photos and videos, but maybe in the future I might use it for other things like running plex media.) I know I will be running FreeNAS. Questions: If I start small for example, making a nas that has 5 drives and I want to add more drives to it later do I reconfigure it? Will my data in the drives will get lost if I add more drives into the nas? I think i can afford the WD RED 4tb drives. But if I can wait and save up maybe I can buy 6tb WD RED drives (But that might take awhile to save up lol) Sorry so much questions, I want to do everything right and do a good job on building the nas.
  6. Thanks guys. You guys are really helpful. I am thinking of building a nas. I live in Hawaii and we do not have any frys electronics or micro center or NCIX and bestbuy is very expensive. I'll do some research in PCPartPicker. Also I have seen this tek syndicate video and wanted to save up and build this overkill nas lol. Are those HGST drives better than the WD drives? For my OS i will go with FreeNAS. If you think is is overkill for me. Can someone help me do a budget build or a decent nas build?
  7. Hey guys I am new to the linustechtips forum. Alright, let me give you guys some background information about myself before I go into the situation. My hobbies are photography and videography. But planning on making it into a small business. I also love to adventure and go on trips so I tend to take a lot of (RAW)photos and videos. Okay I want a storage system where i can store all my photos, videos, and maybe musics and documents. Right now I want something cheap so I was thinking of buying this http://www.amazon.com/ORICO-Drive-Enclosure-Support-9548U3-US-BK/dp/B00JLFIKN4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1445238934&sr=1-1&keywords=ORICO+Tool+Free+4+Bay+3.5%22+SATA+Drive+Enclosure it is not a nas but it will store all my data just gotta buy the hard drives. But if you guys think a Nas would be great for me, should I it or build it? I do not want anything overkill but just right for me. Right now I am low in money and my 2tb hard drive is almost full. But I can save up to build or buy something good. 1. How much terabytes do you think I need? (I am thinking 12 terabytes should be good for me) 2. If I buy a storage raid array (not a nas) should is it recommend to be left on or is it bad if I turn it off when I don't use it and turn it back on to use it? 3.If you guys recommend on buying a nas what brand and model should i get? 4. What brand of hard drive should I go with? 5.If you guys recommend on building a nas what parts should I buy? should I get a mobo with ECC support? What operating system should I go with? How do I setup it up? Please help me out. I do not know what to do. Thanks, Zeeric
