  1. I mean, professional cameras generally get expensive anyway, but it is worth noting that a lot of these CMOS single-sensor cameras don't quite record their stated resolution anyway, due to de-bayering. Not quite sure how something like a GH5 would process this though, as it has a higher res sensor to pull from! I think like many people say, it's about keeping the employees happy and relative to the rest of the operations, it is fairly cheap to implement. Your most expensive resource is space and staff - cameras and equipment are more of a one-time investment! Sure those first RED cameras are still kicking and the FS5? from back in the day lasted a long time.
  2. This is a good point! Hollywood mostly uses Media Composer running on Windows. To be honest, I am unsure about Final Cut running from shared storage in a multi-user environment. I can't really see how the pre-rendering/caching would work with that. Honestly, a lot of industry standard applications are unstable and buggy. This isn't unique to Premiere. My main issue with Premiere, unlike Media Composer, is that it tends to have a much wider veriaty of failure modes and is harder to get back in a functional state once it happens. But, the main reason they stick with their chosen NLE is because their editors know it, and they have an established workflow around it. $600 per seat/per annum isn't unheard of either - I would guess they probably get a discount now given the amount they will be spending with Adobe.
  3. Hi all, Big first world problems! So my Freeview cable arrives on the opposite side of the house, which I have decided against using as the living room. Essentially it would be much easier to have a box capture the signal and then stream a channel of my choosing over the LAN to my TV and potentially other Desktop/Mobile devices. Is there any prebuilt solutions for this, or am I essentially looking at a PC with a TV capture card? I'm considering building a NAS in that room anyway, but would prefer to not have to run a full blown Windows instance on it! (No chance in hell I'm building two machines ) What are everyone else's thoughts? At this point, maybe I'd be better just streaming!
  4. I was gonna write a thing about how you were wrong, but no you are correct. A lot of cameras are actually counting pixels by the number of photosites they have behind a beyer screen... I guess the only exception to that is 3CCD cameras, but they are increasingly uncommon these days... That is super bs marketing though, I'm surprised more people aren't aware of it! Even on the green channel, that's half the effective resolution!
  5. I think it depends what group you're in. I'm in the UK, so they're saying all adults are going to be vaccinated by the 31st of July. Although we'll see if they live up to that. I don't know how RTX 30 series supplies are over in Canada compared to the UK, but I'm sure we're probably getting an even more paltry offering than the US lol. Currently last-gen GPUs are as, or more expensive, than they were new. The lack of new cards is clearly leading to a decrease in people selling (due to not being able to buy new cards) and an increase in people buying (due to not being able to buy new cards). Plus the pandemic is supposedly decreasing supply in TSMCland, while also increasing demand here, because real life has been #cancelled
  6. Very likely, yes. Considering the silicon shortage has hit car manufacturers, who don't exactly use the latest cutting edge stuff...who knows how long it could last. Currently have bets for if I'll get a vaccine or GPU first. Most people are betting on the vaccine lol...
  7. I tried to buy one at the launch (5pm UK time), but I literally missed a card by about 20 seconds because the webpage was slow to launch. Any stock was sold out within about two minutes. I don't expect any supply to be available within the next month or so, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. Yours faithfully, GTX 970 gang
  8. It's an interesting question - one I wondered myself when I found out the specs of the system! I think there is often a large gulf between consumer and professional grade hardware in many industries. Often industry appears to be using seemingly outdated or antiquated equipment - but there can be good reasons behind it. Other examples that spring to mind is the US nuclear arsenal running off 70's era floppy disks, and the automated Vancouver Skytrain also requiring newer 80's era floppies to boot. I think its likely there is some more familiar consumer-like microprocessors on board, for doing some interesting machine-learning type stuff, but these are certainly not in control of the rover. I think it really comes down to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!) I'm often happy to champion the simpler solution, with less complexity to go wrong and more resiliency. I certainly wouldn't trust a windows computer to land a $2.4bn rover on the surface of Mars! Interestingly, I believe ethernet and USB have been deployed to connect some of the cameras up. The link between the rover and sky crane was an ethernet cable. As other people have mentioned, the rover only really needs to carry out data collection, a lot of the heavy processing can be done on earth. I'm sure in that case a lot of powerful hardware will be deployed! I don't think people should jump down OP's throat, they put "outdated" in quotation marks and clearly created the thread in the knowledge that there was probably a good reason for it. It's a really interesting subject looking at the deployment of computer systems in various industries, and how some surprisingly basic hardware, perhaps long forgotten in the consumer space, can prove itself useful in the cutting edge of engineering and science. Cheers! Great watch!
  9. Hi all. Just built a computer and the case does not have enough room to put the hard drive enclosure in again... (iCue220T) But it looks sexy as hell and I've got two SSD's in there anyway. I've got two 3TB WD Red's and was wondering if there are any enclosures suitable to put them in? PSU ideal, but not required. I have an external SATA connection on the PC, so if I could plug them in that way, that would be ideal. Thanks for the help! Any other Q's I'm happy to answer!
  10. I loved the Befang videos, thanks for finding the unlisted video by Erica. That door got truly roasted! Honestly, Louis is quite a skilled electrician, so I doubt that he wired it that wrong. Although it is also quite experimental... I think it was probably just a dodgy battery pack, possibly wired wrong internally, been as most large lithium batteries are just a bunch of AA's strapped together. The stuff you can get legitimately can still get a Befang up to 40mph or so, but that's probably not quite as exciting as the insane custom Befang that set on fire...
  11. Oh sick, yeah I'll grab one of these and get a DC power supply! Looks like a 5V DC input on the side there? I'll check the specs listed on wherever I find one from.
  12. Yeah, you don't wanna work with RAW just starting out with video, the file sizes are absolutely insane and the workflow can be convoluted! 24mb/s files are quite workable, for flexibility I'd recommend recording with that. Recording settings wise, looking at the specs 1080 50p or 1080 25p would be your best bet. Avoid 50i at all costs...
  13. You can try some way of implementing "gating", essentially this reduces the gain of the mic when the incoming sound is below a certain volume. As long as the noise you are trying to filter out is quieter than your voice, this could be quite effective. On the OBS audio mixer, try going on settings, filters and noise gate and have a play with that! Otherwise, getting closer to the microphone will help. Ensure you have good mic technique too, try to face on-axis towards it, and if you are quite close, lean away when shouting or laughing to ensure you don't clip the audio! Also ensure your mic is switched to the 1st setting, as this will make it more directional. Hope this helps!
  14. Hi all! I wish to run a sort of window ventilation system just to force some cool evening air into my room over summer, I've looked around for suitable units and they don't seem to exist in the UK market... Anyway, essentially my plan involves running PC fans externally to a computer... Are there any power supplies that just give you some 3-pin outs you can connect some computer fans to? If not, I'll give up and tie some USB fans together instead. Thanks for the help, please don't eat me
  15. Hi all, Wanted to hear your thoughts on micro 4/3rd lenses in the second hand market that may be good for video. Low aperture would be good but depends on the lens. I'm interested in some more 'vintage' style looks, I actually really like how say anamorphic lenses start to lose depth of field going outwards in the image. I think what I'd like is to break away from the clean, clinical look of many modern lenses. I've already got a lens which does it rather well! That said, if there's any good all round lenses that typically go for a good price second hand I'm more than open... Also aware Micro 4/3 is quite a new lens mount so vintage might not be so easy to come by ':)
  16. i7 6700K Asus Z170 Pro Gaming 16GB DDR4 RAM GTX 970 X2 240 GB Kingston SSD 2TB WD Black HDD The lights come on and the fans speed up but the system won't post. ? I've tried unplugging the graphics cards and just booting with one stick of RAM in. Tried resetting the BIOS. Nothing seems to be able to get it to post ?... Please help. I encountered the problem after plugging in one fan.
  17. Doubt it was the temperature that caused it but it defiantly got broke in transit. Send it back.
  18. My OnePlus 3 just came back from repair today! My Surface 3's Charging Port now doesn't charge. The micro USB port has just bent and broke. Any idea whether the laptop can be charged through other ports or whether it can be repaired?
  19. Just started shooting on film over the summer. Currently use a Canon EOS 300 and Agfa Vista Plus 200 (which can be obtained for a modest price from Poundland...)
  20. Yeah It's strange how on benchmarks in games my setup supposedly roasts a 980Ti yet in real life I don't get anywhere near that level of performance. What issues were you having with your SLI setup? Also do you know what GTX 970's resell for these days? Might be worth selling mine for a 1070 or even a 1060 6GB.
  21. From the owner of a 970 SLI setup, get a 1070. Seriously my SLI setup is working so badly, my browser keeps blacking out the entire screen when browsing websites and my games lagged so badly I had to disable it. SLI is just awful. I'd of been better off burning my money.
  22. I doubt it would take the pilot out. Anyway the copilot would be able to land the plane. If planes could be brought down by exploding phones and laptops there would be accidents all the time. Engines have to withstand bird strikes (which happen surprisingly frequently without any issues) and the airframe has to go through large pressure changes and freezing temperatures. Planes are pretty durable.
  23. Quite a lot of innovations have been made in plane cabin design. Pretty much all the materials, including seats and carpets are made of fireproof materials. Cabin fires can usually be dealt with quite effectively and shouldn't spread. That said, people really shouldn't be taking these on planes as they could cause burns to other passengers. Also people aren't really fond of exploding things on planes...
