  1. ram is the shit to normal people. having booting problems? add more ram. graphics card failing? add more ram. cpu her heating? add more ram. that's how you end up with 32 gigs of ram on a weak ass pentium setup.
  2. indians are the most oblivious to technology. really, we call pc towers "CPUs". no one has ever heard of thermal paste and this computer teacher that i one had was crazy faking that she had sick rig at home with a core i7, 16 bg DDR2 ram, and when i asked him about the graphics card he was like why do i need a graphics card? lulz.
  3. i had created a bootable el capitan flash drive that i downloaded and used on my macbook pro 2012 non retina and am planning to do a fresh install on a macbook air 2011 with the same. can i do it? i just want to know before i potentially mess something up. will there be any difference. please tell me asap> thank you!!!
  4. @Captain_WD i want a 4 bay set up because well the system seems to be more user friendly for the staff there and the extra two always give me an option to upgrade my storage or change my raid system so that i don't have to buy a completely new solution down the line if i need to upgrade. how can i utilize both the lan ports together? can the workers just work directly work on the nas through word using the wifi and can multiple access it at the same time? if the module only fails can i just take out one of the drives and put it in a computer using the sata connection and be able to access the data? @michrech i have an office 365 subscription so the files will also be uploaded to one drive. i know that you can upload directly upload from this nas to amazon's cloud as long as it has a connection to the internet but can i do the same for one drive?
  5. so, in my situation the files that i need to upload are all under about 10 megs each because they are almost exclusively word documents. and these files are sensitive so there is can be no compromises with security and data loss is just not an option. as for the third wd red drive i want to keep it outside of the ex4 to replace in case there is any hard drive failure to rebuild that raid. it will not stay inside the system normally. and abut that, is it safe enough for me to keep this hard drive as on the shelf? it would be subjected to any damage but can it go bad just lying there? and would it be a good idea to pop it in there in case there is ahard drive failure after a year or two? last question, will a wireless access point work so that i can connect this thing through lan to about 6 computers with that can you also tell me how i can make the wireless or wired connection for that matter secure so that no other person who is unauthorized can access it?
  6. i have decided to go with the wd my cloud ex4 with 3x4tb wd reds. with 2 of them in raid 1 and the single 4 tb one as a backup in case one of the drves fail and there is need to rebuild the raid. i have a little question, if one of the hard drive fails and the i need to use another hard drive what all can i use? i know that i can only use a 4tb one but is it necessary for me to use a wd red only or can i switch to any other model or brand? since it has two lan ports i will connect one to the router( please tel me how to do that) and one to the main computer running windows 7. @scottyseng os: there are 2 macs in the office and the rest of about 8 computers are running windows 7. and as for a diy nas i dont think its a good idea because warranty and customer support are much more important in this case than value per dollar or performance.
  7. so my dad has a law firm and i want to get a bas for the firm, we have about 10-11 separate computers and lawyers on it. i want a backup system that is both easy to use for them since they are not really tech savvy. the requirements- - raid 1 set up. - both usb and lan support if possible and if not lan 1gb/s would be enough. - a way for it to be accessed through the router and can be easily backed up to through a shared folder - should be easy to back up to. - an elegant and simple solution like a - the storage should be about 6 to 4 tb (after raid1) IOmega StorCenter Ix2-200 or a wd cycloid or something but raid 1 is a must. - the interface should be easy to use and replace. and whatever you guys suggest can you guys also tell me about the steps to set up raid 1 on these devices. also can you guys also tell me how to make it so that it an be accessed from computers wirelessly through the router? i would really appreciate it. thanks!! ;-)
  8. I have to have 2 phones so a note 4 with Android l and a lumia 730 with Windows phone 8.1. Say what you will about Windows phone but it is amazing to be honest for me atleast. It's much smoother than android. It's like a middle ground between android and ios.
  9. update: tried connecting the hard drive with a micro usb and it works perfectly albeit at usb 2.0 speeds
  10. hey! can i use a micro usb to connect my seagate backup plus that has a usb 3 connector which seems to have a micro usb in there?
  11. almost all of them are backed up on the cloud. but, a few files that worked on the system natively have not been backed up.
  12. @scottyseng shouldn't i jut go with a xeon and ecc memory for its better reliability? and what about the raid card? @Captain Chaos after some research i think i should go with free nas only. also, on of the drives in the office is clicking and corrupting data. how should i recover the data from it there is a lot of it in there safely? i have turned it off to prevent further corruption of data.
  13. well, we won mostly on office files and usually 10 mb pictures but thousands and thousands of them. if there is need for it i can go for about 2-3k usd more. as for the os on the host computers, we have 4 macs and the rest are windows 8.1 pcs. i think gigabit speeds would be enough for all the users since the files are only about a 100 mb's max. i would want to use windows sever because of better software updates and support and encryption. i thought of buying something like the the lenovo think server but i thought i could save a few bucks by doing it myself. i think i would need about 36 terabytes even for the future. can you guys help me with the specifications like the cpu, ram, power supply
