Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a game, not an experience. [SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW]
It might be the slightly different controls, less refined art style, protagonist, or just the overarching story, but it doesn't feel quite as grounded and 'real' as the original LiS. The engine switch from Unreal Engine to Unity hasn't improved much, if anything, and the whole world feels more empty, with less detail in areas already visited.
However, it's not a bad game. Chloe's awkward nervousness is highly relatable, and feels extremely convincing. It's just strange how Rachel suddenly takes an interest in a complete nobody after 1 Firewalk concert. idk, perhaps it's just me, but the whole story feels more poorly planned out and executed than the original, and didn't have the same emotional impact the first did. To put this into perspective, the first episode of the original LiS establishes the place, the powers, and the characters, with little to no emotional moments. The first episode of BtS feels as if it's pandering to the fanbase a bit too much, and ends up clumsily switching from emotional moment to normal gameplay again and again. It just feels a bit too 'fake' and staged. Yes, I am aware that it's a game, but the first game managed to disguise that fact so cleverly that you really felt like Arcadia Bay was real. The nightmare sequences were also a bit of a letdown, as they feel too ambiguous to be of any use, and only after perusing r/lifeisstrange did I truly grasp the true meaning.
It's a game, not an experience, and the story most definitely contributes to that feeling. However, Chloe's inner monologue is just as, if not more entertaining than that of Max, and the D&D game was an amazing bonus.
All in all, it feels more like a fanfiction than a true LiS game. With that said, I still eagerly await the next 2 episodes to see where Deck 9 takes this.
