  1. As if my old Dolch Flexpac PIII hasn't been through enough, I'm gonna be trying to cram a full ATX system into it.

...Or maybe it'll be the Pac6-PIII that experiences this pain... Hmm.

  2. Already ahead on that, I have all sorts of soft-line watercooling parts and radiators so it would be no problem watercooling it. I think it's more a matter of if I take the sane option and use an adequate case or see if I can push my old Wavemaster to the brink. Also due to unforeseen bills I'll likely end up going with a 12600kf. I will eventually have to make the jump to 11, so I'd rather just do it now and get the adjustment period over with.
  3. So, I've been running a 2700x since it came out and have had to stick with Windows 10 due repeated instances of it choking horrendously on Windows 11. I'm looking at either a R9 7900x or an I7-13700kf, my main priority is just having enough horses to last me until I decide to upgrade four, or even five years down the road from now. Does anyone know if Windows 11 still has performance issues with AMD?
  4. If what I read about the Sony Linkbuds is right, then I should have patented the ring-shaped speaker design I made back in highschool.

  5. So, to my dismay, my Mionix Naos QG has finally died after about three years. Powers on and works for about a second or two before it goes kaput and windows brings up a device failure message. I'm tempted to buy the same thing since it's what I'm familiar with, but I'd like to know what other options there are. My main requirement is that it be under $100 and have similar ergonomics.
  6. And a final update for the night, the system is technically working now but nowhere near complete I've decided to upgrade to an rtx 3080 fe once supply normalizes, today my 12-pin molex set arrived and now im just waiting on the crimping tool to arrive (pay day to the rescue) ill be shortening my power supply cables and rewiring both the I'm also ordering fans, likely noctua's A6-25's As a final note, should I throw these onto some ram?
  7. I ended up getting around to this later than expected. Upon getting a keyhole saw I proceeded to cut out the remainder of the area I wanted to open up between the top and bottom compartments in the case. As stated before having the proper tool for the job speeds things up considerably. While at it I also drilled and tapped holes into the aluminum, being a novice I messed up two holes but was easily able to correct the mistakes and add on nuts to hold the standoffs in place. And a couples test fits later...
  8. To preface I just refer to this as the dolch because the original system has a unique enough name as is, and I have no other names for it despite daily driving it quite happily since building it. I'm hoping to eventually take this far enough that I can fabricate some custom parts or an entirely new chassis with modern IO but it'll be at least a few years unless I can find sponsors to provide me with tools and/or hardware. If anyone has connections to companies that could provide tools or fabricate a custom chassis please send me a message. Granted I don't think I can afford to immediately build a new system as I need to move first. Also, I didn't post a buildlog for the original process of building this due to being on a time crunch and couldn't document everything. I figured it was time to fix the mistakes from the first attempt and prepare the system for an eventual upgrade to RTX 3000. Here are the specs: CPU: Intel i5-9600k @ Stock (Temps need retesting) GPU: PNY XLR8 GTX 1080 using aftermarket air cooler (returned to air from water and my screws were lost ) PCIE Riser: Linkup 35CM (One of their Left-angle products) RAM: 16GB T-Force DDR4 3000Mhz PSU: 700 FSP 80+ Platinum Flex-ATX power supply (actually pretty quiet ) Blower Fan: EverCool FOX-2 PCIE blower fan Display: A Shelled SunFounder's Portable monitor (13.3" 1080p, boasting a supposed 5ms response time) Boot Drive: 250GB Inland Sata SSD in a PCI-slot hotswap bay Mass Storage: 1TB Intel SSD 6 NVME drive The case is from a Dolch FXPAC-PIII-600 IIRC, these were manufactured by Dolch Computer Systems from around the 80s to very early 2000s as industrial machines. Some of their products even saw military use. From what I gather my original unit was used as a network sniffer which is apparent when you look at the original Gigabit fiber card that was built to slot into ISA ports. Now if you plan to do a conversion to a sleeper, It's important to note that Wifi will not work on this unless you can run some sort of antenna to the exterior of the aluminum frame the computer is built around, as the entire case acts as a faraday cage. The keyboards on (at least some) of these systems are mechanical though not with full-distances switches. They actually use Cherry-ML variants and while I can find new switches I cannot find any stabilizer brackets. Here's a picture of the system back when I still had an aluminum plate covering the empty portion of the LCD cutout. Additional views: And here is how the interals looked prior to this rebuild: As you can see it was very much just thrown togethe half-hazardly. There are also physical blemishes in the plastic but I can't do much to fix those as the plastic has reached an age where it's beginning to deteriorate When I first started this I actually recieved two broken units. One which powered on but was unresponsive to input (and was wrecked in shipping) and another which would not boot at all. So I had a spare aluminum frame I could work on without leaving myself without a system to use. As I stated above I have no tools outside of a hacksaw, and a power drill though I did get a keyhole saw (which prior to this project I didn't know existed) I forgot to take a picture of before I started cutting but this is what I was able to do on the first day, I didn't have my keyhole saw yet and was merely working with a mini-hacksaw which broke several times. I got frustrated and almost drilled the rest of the way but stopped myself. The site is limiting my image count so I'll continue this in a reply tomorrow night when I have more time to write

I've spent the last 6 hours using a hacksaw bec…

I'm cutting a big section out of a welded computer case, dremel would work but the cut I'm making is in a spot that makes getting a dremel into there both hazardous and awkward I also own neither a scrollsaw or a jigsaw EDIT: and as a bonus the case uses 2mm thick aluminum which I don't think my aviation sheers will cut
  10. I've spent the last 6 hours using a hacksaw because I don't have access to a mill or cnc

Jigsaw?  Scrollsaw?  What are you trying to do?

I prescribe a Home Depot Chinese garbage jigsaw.  One of those crap homeowner ones that’s only good for a few uses.   $20 crap.  Still worth 6 hours of work though. other options would be a rotozip type tool.  For aluminum I personally like a rough cut followed by air file.  I got compressed air though.

a nipper attachment for a drill might be better, though I think that could be a lot more money

  11. So, I got my hands on a non-functional dolch computer, aaaaand I decided to build a sleeper in it (Someone out there is gonna be furious hearing that) Anyway, I'm trying to pick a powersupply that can power both a 2070 and i5-9600k but I can't use a standard SFX power supply due to space constraints, I've got a cooling solution for the GPU that will use up a lot of available space The case has a seperate area for the power supply, measuring about 37cm by 10.5cm by 5.5 - 6cm (depending on if I cut out a spot for clearance to put in the PSU) If anyone can point me to a suitable power supply it'd be really helpful
  12. Has anyone ever bought something from them? I've suddenly found a need to be able to move around between floors in my home without lugging around my desktop everywhere I go and a desktop replacement sounds like a good way to go. I don't need two desktops and I could upgrade my aging NAS using the leftover parts I'm currently looking at the NH58AF1 barebones since I'd be able to save on some cost reusing parts I already have. https://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30767
  13. So, I decided to fire up vanilla Fallout 4 on a fresh windows install and noticed it didn't seem to be running as smooth as it used to be. 30-40 fps on average in the concord area. I'm seeing other people with the same CPU and GPU combination are getting 140fps consistently. Again, the windows install is brand new, I only installed it last night. I did consider my radiator setup might be the issue but I'm averaging 80C under load and can't notice any thermal throttling though I can test further tomorrow when I have some more time. My drivers are the latest ones from Nvidia's website. Here are the full system specs: CPU: Ryzen 2700x @ stock w/ Swiftech Apogee block GPU: GTX 1080 @ stock w/ Thermaltake GP1080FE block RAM: Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4 3000mhz PSU: Corair RMx 850x RADs: 80mm + dual 80mm
  14. I'm using the Sony MDR-7506's, they sound pretty good IMO being reference headphones, plus being able to call up sony for replacement parts is pretty handy should I ever need to Though if anyone think's there's a better pair of reference headphones or earbuds out there for not too much more I'm definitely interested in hearing what you have to offer
  15. i have this old Pentium II, I also have a dual-socket Slot A MOBO that it fits onto. I'll have to post pics and maybe try to get it running again, maybe try to get a web server running on it with some form of linux? I dunno but it could make for a neat gaming rig
  16. I should post that dualsocket Slot A Mobo I have lying around

  17. As a brief notice, I'm already midway through the restoration portion of this build Hardware list (This is a transplant, all hardware has already been purchased): The system receiving the case transplant has been my daily driver since September of last year, and recently I've lost the need to have 32GB of RAM so I may donate half of that to another family member (Build log coming up soon!) The whole project came about when I realized the case I'm using now is not only cumbersome for doing maintenance due to how heavy and large it is, but I've just been having a bad time with it, the USB 3.0 ports run at 2.0 speeds, the headphone jack works only half of the time, and the thumbscrews are stripping out after doing regular maintenance I also have issue with panels warping. not to mention the case weighs half a ton just by itself and makes lifting it onto a work surface impossible for just one person. I'll likely be selling it off as I've learned huge cases just aren't for me Anyway, back to the topic of this post, the case I've selected is my old reliable, having gotten me through four systems if I remember correctly. but after spending about a year in my basement it needs some TLC and a new paintjob. I don't have any pics of it when I dug it out but it's definitely seen some water. Here is the todo list so far, it may change as I progress with this Dissassemble case by removing all rivets and screws Sand all parts (mostly by hand as I don't own a power sander, but plan to buy one) Repaint using automotive primer and enamel (Lemme know what colors you folks think would look nice) Reassemble and install new rivets Print a new faceplate/bezel (The original has become brittle and the IO is in desperate need of upgrading) Find someone who can CNC acrylic or tempered glass to create a new side-panel window I'm going to try and re-use the original lighting tubes and make them RGB controllable, maybe, I'm not sure yet. I don't know what the case is, as I received it second hand about 5 years ago. My estimate is that the case was from circa 2006 given the original hardware that was in it is from that era, if anyone can provide some info on the case it would be greatly appreciated. I have pics below of the case from when I recieved it, and later on with the last build it saw. I don't have any more recent pics prior to dissassembly. I'll post updates tomorrow as I continue to sand and spraypaint parts.
  18. Hi, so I'm looking for a new mouse, however due to my hands being large with "piano fingers" I'm looking for something with large wings for my ring finger and pinky to rest on during use, previous mice I've used have resulted in the pinky on my right hand to begin to bend inwards I've been using this for the last year and have found it to be nice to hold, but it's not exactly the most durable thing: https://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Combatwing-Professional-Ergonomic-Rechargeable-Adjustable/dp/B06X3ZT78Q ideally what I'm looking for would be a slightly larger but similar mouse, than what I'm using now It doesn't necessarily need to be wireless, What would you folks recommend I purchase? My budget is about $80-100
  19. Or, run windows in a VM, Virtualbox has a seamless desktop mode I believe
  20. Oh god, Fallout 3, 4, and NV ate so much of my time. So have Cities Skylines, and simcity.
  21. Or at least that's the plan... I too plan to not have kids, not where I live anyway
  22. At an estimated $650usd aprox when it launches I'm not comfortable buying a phone that expensive, especially when it lacks any features that would make it worthwhile for my use case. I just need an integrated stylus and the capacity to run android 8, pressure sensitivity would be a nice bonus and the Note 5 delivers both of those things and more while being at a lower price point that the alternative. However i'm still not set in stone, I need to look into ROM support for the variant that boost officially supports. If it's not this then I'm buying the Stylo 4+ as it's on sale for not much more than the Note 5
  23. The Note 5 looks like the best candidate, just need to make sure I can get one on Boost Mobile, otherwise I'm gonna have to stick with the Stylo 4 which is less powerful
  24. I forgot about upgrading android through custom roms, though the Note 8, even used, is still way out of my budget. As enticing as pressure sensitivity may be for drawing.
  25. Hi, so I'm currently looking for an upgrade from my LG Stylo 3 which has been having some problems after an accidental reset (Long story), I'm interested in upgrading my phone to something newer with Android 8 for the sake of having Project Treble for more consistent updates. Budget is around $200 but I can stretch to about $280 if need be. I'd prefer an integrated stylus as I'm very prone to losing things and use my stylus almost daily for jotting down notes and such. I am aware of the Stylo 4 and 4+ though I'd like to see what my other options are Why do I want to see what other options there are? I'm also interested in rooting if possible, but it's not a requirement.
