To be fair he does live in Switzerland. I'm not sure how effective that would be in the Australian summer.

Honestly for 1080p 60, the 970 is probably enough
BUT the 980 is much faster, and should last longer, and will push 144hz or 1440p etc much better, and if even more demanding games come out it will handle them better
I say plump up for the 980 but the 970 is a great choice
    Alternatively, look at the 390x

Jimmybiggs got a reaction from Andrew420 in i7-950 abnormal temps?
I run a i7 960 & regularly was getting those temps - but in a HTPC case with stock fan - no OC. Changed the case with a average after market CPU fan, and they've dropped - somewhat.
These chips & x58 combos run notoriously hot, and is made worse by the shocking northbridge temps.
Can I ask your northbridge temps? And how's the airflow in the case itself? Grasping at straws, but it could be an overall heat generated thing.

I'm saying m.2 in x99 runs at gen 3 x4 so it produces the same bandwidth of 32gb/s.

You can, but you'd derive no speed benefit. I suggest 2x8GB of Kingston, G. Skill, Corsair, or Crucial. Leave yourself the slots to increase capacity in the future.

Jimmybiggs reacted to RazrLeaf in Fractal Design Define R5 Fan Setup
I have a Define R5 with 4 fans, arranged with 3 intakes and 1 exhaust. While you can get away with 2 in and 1 out, 3 in is better for multiple reasons.
The filters reduce CFM. They keep out dust, but make it harder for the fans to do their job The stock fans don't have enough pressure to counter-balance the resistance of the filters. The filters drop their CFM considerably. I'm not sure 2 stock filtered intakes can match 1 stock exhaust. "Too much" positive pressure will not hurt your cooling capabilities. It just helps keep dust out. The irony of PC air cooling is that the most effective fans are ones that move heat away from sources (exhaust), but those setups quickly become the dustiest (and therefore ineffective) unless regularly cleaned. My recommendation is as follows: stock fan exhaust, stock fan as bottom intake (between PSU and HDD cage), and 1 or 2 more powerful fans for the front intakes. The door provides good noise attenuation for the more powerful intakes, and the stock fan can output close to it's max CFM as an exhaust.

And I suggest you use the second stock fan as the bottom intake is because my bottom filter would vibrate against the case when I had a powerful bottom intake fan. The bottom filter is clipped at the front (under the HDD cage) and the back (under the PSU), but the middle isn't. And the filter is naturally curved away from the case. When I had a powerful enough bottom intake, it would pull the filter up flush with the case, but then the filter would bow away, then get pulled back, and create an annoying buzz.

Jimmybiggs got a reaction from Torand in New Intel P3608 - An SSD without training wheels
Intel have just made plans to release a new PCIe SSD Drive... Yes it's enterprise level, but WTF
    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2987956/solid-state-drives/intel-samsung-launch-their-fastest-ssds-with-up-to-5gbps-speeds.html
Intel's new P3608 Series PCIe SSD comes in 1.6TB, 3.2TB and 4GTB capacities and delivers up to 850,000 I/Os per second (IOPS) random reads and 150,000 random writes.
The drive has a sequential read/write speed of up to 5,000MBps (5Gbps) and 3,000MBps (3Gbps), respectively.
Anyone want to guess its RRP?

Jimmybiggs got a reaction from Vellinious in Is there any real differences in evga stock-sc-ssc & FTW versions I light of gaming?
Good question - thought on this heaps. The 960 2GB would save me $200.

But I'm trying to limit my rush to get Pascal, so I'm aiming to allow a year or two to let them settle on running specs, etc... So the good 970 now sill be more than enough to keep me happy, and then allow me to indulge later on.

I'm spending a fair whack on a fast Sklyake system, and usually keep my rigs for 5 years or so. So a mid-life GPU Pascal should play with the system I'm planning nicely and see out the system lifespan.

If you're just going to upgrade to Pascal, why not just buy something cheap to get ya by for a few months?  A 960, or something from the EVGA B Stock?  Some pretty decent stuff in there for pretty cheap.
