So my GPU seems to like either one but not both at a time.
I got G1 gaming GTX 970 with the bios from GTX970 thread. 
 
If i go core clock i can get it up to +170 with 100% stable in valley bench and firestrike or
I can have mem +750 stable. 
 
But as soon as i start to push both of them together it gets unstable. 
 
So which one would be better?

Its never always the case. You need to make sure the BIOS is meant for the memory type that your card is. Flashing the wrong BIOS can brick the card and getting into the second bios is a bit of a hassle as well

My G1 runs pretty hot too and it doesn't overclock very well at all either. Was playing tomb raider yesterday and it was hitting around 60C at stock speeds with a 25C ambient temp, not to mention the fans were really loud too, even setup a custom fan curve and it seems to just completely ignore it. Not sure what gigabyte has done to the G1 line but it seems older G1 cards were a lot better.

My point bro, I asked the same question "Which GTX 970 is better", responses like,  "Screw that card, get the 390 its a lot better" and "970 now is beaten by the 390 so get that". It annoys me when people ask a question about something like this and people just say get the 390. Anyway you get my point.

I would advise you to do a complete reinstall of your drivers. It'll just allow the upgrade process to be smoother.

How come people always recommend the 390 to people who want to get a 970? Pros of the 970 are: Gameworks, gamestream, physx, shadowplay, and the fact that it will run at least 10c cooler than an average 390. I would get an asus strix 970. Asus makes quality Nvidia GPUs, it should run very cool and have no problems overclocking. And Asus has great customer support.

Yes, it is good, Here's mine, just a bit higher, and its VERY fast... for the US atleast.
