  1. Some of you may remember a post I made long ago about performing a Windows 10 feature update on a system with very limited free space on C, and how it was able to utilize a spare flash drive as extra working room to accomplish the update when it would not have otherwise been possible.  A cool feature for sure, but apparently no longer necessary.  I just ran the 2004 update on that same machine (which to be clear has been reinstalled since then and kept lean), and not only did it not require a helper drive, it didn't even make a significant net change to my free space at all, and in fact once the update was complete, a "disk cleanup" was able to free a good 3 - 4 GB that were previously required by the OS.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one - YouTube

  2. I'm not aware of anything like that but that doesn't mean by any stretch that it's not possible.
  3. At best you would need some kind of adapter card and at worst, you would need sophisticated re-soldering skills and even then it may not work. Regardless, best not to worry about it. It is so dramatically outclassed by your 2060 performance-wise that it wouldn't help in any meaningful way.

Does Newegg add insurance fees now by default?…

Considering how every in-store purchase I've ever tried to make regarding technology came accompanied by a sales pitch, it doesn't surprise me that they'd try this actually. In fact, I'm more surprised that others haven't already been doing this for a long time, now that I think about it.
  5. Perhaps this is simply a symptom of a larger problem - that is, not specifically an issue with that file or DX9 but some broader compatibility issue and it's just manifesting in an error calling out this particular thing. I am reluctant to bother recommending it since its track record for me is so incredibly lack lustre, but have you tried running in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or some other previous version?

Does Newegg add insurance fees now by default?…

No idea but I'd imagine if it is trying to push a warranty or something by default that you can opt-out. Surely they must know that if they force it on people they'll just lose business to all of the other retailers.
  7. 1650 Super, or a 1060, somewhere in that range I think is appropriate. Should be able to get a good deal used as you said.

USE_PIZZA_DATA is an interesting opener, it would definitely have my attention
  9. You could certainly do this. You could also try downloading a DX9 installer from Microsoft directly. Perhaps the bundled version has some issue.
  10. For displays, at least within the small segment made up of traditional flat panels as we know them today (PC monitors, TVs, etc.), I've said before that I feel we've already reached this limit with 8K. Now, that's not to say that new tech like VR, holographic displays, other things I can't even predict, etc. won't benefit from more, but these traditional ones really don't, it's just biology and physics. When you consider the field of view a screen like this would ordinarily take up, the angular "resolution" of our eyes means that having more than an 8K panel is simply meaningless. However, when it comes to recording, it's a whole other story. In addition to capturing content for other media as I listed above, there is the ever present need to stabilize, crop, etc. and this all takes resolution - sometimes quite a lot. Graphical effects like green screen also will come out at better quality if the source footage is clearer. With that said, there is still a limit, though perhaps for different reasons. It won't be so much that there's no benefit, but rather, simply not way to physically make it happen. You may have noticed that no phone camera has ever had pixels smaller than 0.8 μm. This is because they must be at least that large to see red light. If you extrapolate this upward to the largest size you can feasibly make a sensor before either it or the lenses are simply not practical, you get a figure somewhere in the hundreds, maybe thousands of MP, but not higher.
  11. Between the numerous limitations on how and when you could use it, the questionable performance benefits, and above all, the abysmal degradation to image quality, I'm sure few have forgotten the disaster that was DLSS on launch, but as badly as it failed, I think the new and improved DLSS 2.0 is poised to succeed.  I had a look at some example images and video earlier today and it is truly astonishing, not only how far they've come from what it was, but what they've achieved outright.  Despite improving performance by at least an entire "tier" (think 2060 -> 2070) if not more, the image quality is not only at least as good as native but in many cases actually superior!  The only thing more confusing than the fact they've accomplished this is the fact it isn't getting more mainstream coverage from places like LTT.  Or, perhaps I've just missed it somehow?

If it was available on older cards, I'd be more excited :D

  12. I'm not sure about the legality of providing a copy of the file, or the wisdom in accepting random DLLs from strangers on the internet, so while theoretically I or many others could give you a copy, I'm not sure that's the best idea. From what I can tell it is a component of DirectX, so perhaps reinstalling DX9 would do the trick?
  13. True I had forgotten about that. I'll also add setting the latency/buffer size too low can do this as well, if it's a unit for which that's even an option.
  14. I've heard excellent things about the MX Master 3 with the only gripe being the less than gaming grade sensor. With that said, I know someone who games at a very high level with one just fine, and considering it's not your top priority anyway, I think it would be a good fit.
  15. The page below lists some other common suggestions, but none of it feels quite right to me. Still, might be worth a try: https://www.wintips.org/fix-wifi-wont-turn-on-wireless-networks-not-available-windows-10-8/ I also noticed you listed your laptop on your profile and tried to have a closer look at it. It's actually quite similar to one I have, and in particular the F3 key caught my attention. At least, I think that's what it is - the only picture I could find is dreadfully low resolution so it is hard to tell. If it's what I think it is though, it would toggle wireless capability as I described previously. Perhaps it would be worth double checking this?
  16. Hm, did any updates get installed recently? It could have caused a disconnection like this.
  17. The main way to improve your FPS would be to reduce graphical settings, particularly those which load the CPU more than anything else. In order to better balance the game for your hardware, you could also try increasing settings that primarily load the GPU, such as resolution, since this should be effectively free in your situation if done right (will improve visuals without impacting FPS negatively).
  18. First off, I know it's a meme and a simple thing but, have you tried rebooting? If that doesn't work, bearing in mind that this is a laptop and that most if not all laptops have a hardware radio switch of some sort, is it possible you bumped a button by accident that put it into airplane mode or otherwise disabled wifi?
  19. Crackling/popping immediately makes me think of a DPC latency spike. Sometimes a badly behaving driver can freeze the system at a low level for longer than usual (around 1 - 10 ms) - short enough you won't see or feel it, but long enough to cause an audio stutter. Try the tool here: https://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml Run it in the background for a while and see if it records a big red spike next time you hear one of these glitches. If so, this is likely the problem. To troubleshoot it from there, you'll want to go through your devices, disabling each one by one until you find it. Not a fun or quick process but kind of the only way afaik. As a hint, it is most often a network driver when this is the problem.
  20. Do you have any custom mouse software installed? It might be unintentionally overriding/resetting that setting. I can't say I've heard of it changing itself before. Ideally we can figure out why that's happening but worst case scenario, I can think of a few other workarounds off hand.

So here's the responses from the different stra…

Interesting, I feel like this doesn't line up well with the things people actually use en masse
  22. That video is 10:55 on floatplane and 11:31 on YouTube, meaning there's 36 seconds of ads baked in already. If we add the 4x 5 seconds of YouTube ads on top of that, it comes to 56 seconds on 11:51 of video content, or in other words ~7.9% ads. Cable TV last I checked was around 33% (an hour would have about 40 mins of show and 20 mins of ads), and don't forget that on top of that you pay for the privilege of watching. That's also to say nothing of the fact you can watch this on demand and skip those 36 seconds baked in with very little effort, where as to do that with cable TV you'd have to have recorded the program ahead of time and own a PVR to have that option. I know this is a slight tangent, and I also don't want this to be taken as downplaying the issue, but I want to remind people how horrible cable TV actually is in case they've forgotten
  23. That may not work, but that's not to say it isn't a good idea or that you'll have to redownload. I'm going to use Steam as an example, but other applications may work the same way, I just don't know them as well. When you install anything, be it a game or other program, more often than not it will lay down a variety of config files and registry keys all over the system, outside the main installation directory. As such, if you just copy the main directory to a new system and try to run it, it may not work, or may work only partially. If this is the case you'll need to run the installer again. Thankfully Valve has thought of this and if you try to install a Steam game for which the files are already present, it will detect this and only download what has changed since you last played it, reusing everything else. Please note the potential hiccup I describe here though: https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/265114-ryan_vickers/?status=254845&type=status In your situation you'll be copying/reinstalling your entire library though, not just one game here or there, and I believe there is a way to "import" it all at once, which makes things a bit easier and avoids this issue. I do not recall off the top of my head how to do this though.
  24. As far as I can tell, a normal home system will not default to running the affected service and thus would not be directly vulnerable (though that's to say nothing of the possibility that another system on your network does become compromised and serves as another way to propagate). Is this correct? For the sake of "normal users", I just want to get extra clarification on that.
  25. I'm sure we've all seen cheap knock-offs of a popular product at one time or another, but what may not be quite as well-known is the process of starting with an existing cheap item, marking up the price, slapping a new logo on it, and marketing the heck out of it.  Whether it's watches, wireless earbuds, or any number of other things, I think it's important to be aware of this because once you are, you can either take what you would have spent on that and get something much better for the price, or, if their quality was sufficient, just go directly to their supplier on ebay/aliexpress/etc. and pick up the same item (sans logo) for 1/2, or even 1/100 the price.

Agreed! Reminds me of the original Kove bluetooth speaker, it was just a rebranded nameless Chinese speaker (you could find the same speaker under a lot of different name on eBay and Aliexpress even before Kove started marketing heavily) and they were selling theirs at a huge markup (that's why they were always offering 50% off links/coupons on sponsored videos).

Not sure about their current line up, but big discounts like this should be an automatic red flag IMO (just like how on Wish you see and 'original price' and then a 'discounted price' ... yeah, I'm sure your crappy 16bit gaming console full of pirated ROMs is worth $250 originally but is magically discounted to $29 !!!
