KrYpToCiD reacted to ArticularSpark in Linus on Live Stream (I've been thinking of retiring)
I got the notification tonight that Linus was live on YouTube tonight, and I actually had some time to tune in for once. My post here is just me adding in a message of support for Linus, in light of some of the things he discussed in the stream. I realize he did include at the end that it isn't a cry for help, or him exclaiming he's knocked down and out. Nonetheless, I still wanted to share this.

The stream was all of 28 minutes or so long, and there were a lot of things covered that I noticed many people in the chat were concerned about. Now, looking past the trolls spamming "F" and the people doing anything to gain attention for themselves, which were in no short supply, the chat was supportive and many people were donating for the sole reason that Linus was streaming. Anyway, a couple things stuck with me that I'll likely not forget, the most prominent of which was the story Linus shared of the Make-a-Wish Foundation reaching out to him about a sick child, who's wish was to meet Linus. I suppose for the sake of being as brief as possible, I'll only talk about this for the rest of the post. The short version is that the child's condition worsened, and the plans they were originally coming up with had to be cancelled due to a rapidly-worsening condition. Linus told us he was asked to record a personal video for them. Linus agreed, and likened it to the fact he records videos every day, and thought he would handle it alright. His words to us were that he pulled his phone out, went to record and... He froze, as he couldn't think of anything to say. He went on to talk to us about how it weighed on him heavily at that moment, particularly after reading through the guidelines sent to him for the video. He then cried, and tried to express how painful it was to try and put together something for a 12-year-old who was terminally ill, and... Well, a lot of us, myself at that time included, were really concerned and sympathetic.

Once again, to be brief, I'll try to shorten my recap, and get on with what I really wanted to say with the post. I may speak for myself here, but I'm positive countless others will agree that no one on this planet should go through that. Millions of us love and support you and everything you do, and your expression of your thoughts tonight make us think no less of you. I speculate that my words here may come across as pointless validation, but it is the truth. You've helped us learn, entertained us, and in some cases, you've given us something that has been life-changing. I wouldn't have my job today with Best Buy without you, NCIX, or every member of Linus Media Group. With your videos you've brightened the minds of people for more than a decade, and more people are still arriving to your channel today. We're all grateful for you. No matter what you decide to do, or where you decide to go, you'll always have our support.

I really should be off to bed now, but I may add on in the morning if any other thoughts arise over the course of tonight.

    I wish you the best,
    Austin

There is a catch . Unity want to prevent payed accounts cloning. They would lose a lot of money so they are using the license key to determine what you did with their software. it is working something like this: you have a hardware ID and in the same time you log in their server compare your public IP with your hardware ID submitted by log in. You can fool the Windows saying you have identical hardware ( ID, manufacture, parts, etc) as someone else but this is a red flag for them. When you log in with another HDD and everything is identical even your IP, you get flagged and stopped from log in. The same is when you cloned someones account and use it on your own PC, even if you try to cover your tracks, there can't be 2 identical PC even with same bar codes and again you get flagged.

Ok. it's your call then =)) I'm a freshman student and right now I'm working in a quite big PC workshop (around 150 people are working here) and we've seen some amazing stuff. Anyway, you said that the CPU isn't detected? Did you get a POST code? Or it is just your instinct?

It would be that easy if that would be the only thing damaged. Mobos have power protections only on power inputs so it is very possible to get much much more things fried

They announce a product only when they are very close to make it or they are fairly sure that they are going to get it working. Most of the time they show a proof of concept or a dummie, the real product being manufactured or studied to fix some bugs. Also, most of the time, the mass production is in early state or it even didn't begun. Even for big factories, it takes time to make, test and ship millions of finish products. even if the rate of failed products are 0.1% there are still a lot of failed products for a million good products.

Another option is to ditch the idea of a x86 pc-based router. If you separate the VPN load from the routing/firewall tasks you can get by with a good low-power ethernet+SFP router (like the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4). Just run the VPN client on the desktop (or in the future on a VM) and you're good.

BTW you absolutely don't need server-grade hardware for running a home-router, just keep the ISP router as a cold spare in case something fails...

The only case where I would consider server hardware (and ECC memory) at home is for a storage server. If your stuff is mission critical you should always setup two boxes with automatic failover, don't forget a UPS-system with a generator out back and a second internet line, you know, just in case your cat blog goes offline

Oh, mi bad  Yeah, I was thinking about dual 27" again with nice IPS but only 2K . In the future, when I gather some budget again, I'll add a 4k one, maybe slighty bigger like 30" or 32. The current monitor will be reused as 3rd monitor in portrait mode. I've found this mode to be more pleasing for reading texts and emails :))

VRAM usage varies per program, per project, per resolution I'd go with the newer Pxxxx cards not because of more VRAM but due to the fact that newer cards perform better, have more and newer ports, usually draw less power and are better optimized to work because when software developers optimize their stuff they thing of the newest card first

Now if you are a student YOU DON'T NEED A QUADRO CARD, I am pretty sure more students can afford a top-of-the-machine so don't worry you can go GEFORCE and that will give you the GPU acceleration you need. Quadro is just a geforce with some validation process and extra features that you don't always benefit from. Although, solidworks is known to work better on quadro cards so if that program is more important to you quadro is not a bad choice at all
It'd be nice if you mentioned your actual budget and the country you are from. We can't try to understand you if you just say "my budget is limited and things are expensive here" everyone has a different conception of that

Don't worry. I'm sure many people here including me aren't native speakers and even native speakers don't have perfect english so don't take it so seriously

The M4000 and the P4000 are significantly more powerful than the K2200, but that only matters if the software you're using really leverages the cores available. I dont believe Solidworks benefits significantly from powerful GPU's but Maya might, especially since many of the recommendations suggest you'd want more VRAM for extra intensive modeling. I have no experiences or knowledge of UE or CryEngine, but if this is you career path (as it is mine) then the M4000 or P400 might be a worthy investment

The most safer PSU are the redundant ones. But you can find them only at servers. As a recommendation..... IDK..... I have on my NAS a Corsair VS650 and it was online for the last 3 years. It really depend on luck you know? You may get even an faulty CPU or Mobo. But I can suggest to use something from well branded manufacturer  even this is an usless recommendation

Well you will want 8 core Intel to start, then I would just put in 16 GB of RAM since it is cheap. Add in RAID 5 or 6 (go with 6 if important data which it sounds like) So you will need 1-2 extra drives. I would also keep a spare sitting not far away incase of drive failure. Since it is important data, you will want a second server for backup reasons. Go with 2-3x the storage he needs today depending on how fast he is filling up stuff.

As for hosting a web server.... Does he have a static IP? If not he will need DYNDNS, not worth it IMO. Go with Digital Ocean hosting to set up a Linux server. Go with a MEAN stack since it is easy to build on (it's what all my companies software runs on due to being fast and secure).

If he wants to edit on the server not his desktop you will want 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection direct to server since switches cost a ton. He will want a RAID 10 SSD array with at least 6 drives in it. I would go with double capacity of what he needs today to let him grow.

For OS, I would go with just a basic Linux distro with packages added in. IMO it is better and more configurable. UnRAID is easier to use yes but the trade offs are not worth it unless you need very basic.

yeah. Unfortunately I'm well aware about that  I've taught initially about a power splitter that split the power from wall plug to PSU and screen with something but I don't think how or if it'll work.

Can you use an i5-4690T or i5-4590T? They are low power cpu and you might be able to squeeze everything into 160W. Although it will be very, very tight.

There were a time where something like that was going on, where it was easy to find a laptop that had the things you needed even if your needs were very special, but now  you have to look really hard to find one and when you find the one expect it to cost a lot of money.

My solution is a simple one ) . On Steam are able to purchase the most console games, no? This is the situation........he can make a mini ITX PC. in a small case and insert 2 hdd at least. one of them will be with SteamOS and the other can be with a Windows . All he got to do is to install SteamOS and to buy a xbox one console with USB adapter and of corse to configure at boot to chose every time wich drive will be using. More inf about Steam OS  here :http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown?l=english . And the most funny thing is..........you can chose the graphics card or u can chose to buy a AMD A series procesors (APU) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAOV09kdjzM.

P.S. Sorry for my english....I'm trying to make it better
