I'd just convince them the the emptiness they feel currently is nothing compared to the emptiness of not existing, or something like that, or if they are religious you can use the pits of damnation strategy

Are they special to you? Because, in all honesty, at a point like this there doesn't seem to be much you can do... Ask what they have to live for and show they have lots? Even though things seem awful now they can always get better...

I wouldn't call that suicidal just idiotic, as he wouldn't die from chomping off a couple fingers without something like blood thinners

Ask other to actually seek help? Even if they think it can't help, it most likely can actually think about the decision they're trying to make and realise what a bad idea it is.

Just keep saying nice things to them and if they disagree, keep saying nice things.
