  1. Is there anything preventing multiple entries? What happens if I have more than one entry in the top 10? edit: replied to wrong thread
  2. Other than thinkpads or laptops with intel Ultra Low Voltage cpus (none quad core) I don't think you'd be able to get 9 hours of battery life out of the laptop, at least not for that price. What are you doing with a laptop that requires 4 cores? is dual core hyperthreaded OK? (they have better performance than amd quad cores at most stuff) Do you want it to be thin and light? Dedicated GPU? How small are you willing to go?
  3. the laptop is going to suffer from at least 2 of these problems: have a terrible battery life run wicked hot be MASSIVE Ultimately you can build a powerful desktop, get awesome peripherals for it AND buy a nice, powerful workstation laptop like the thinkpad w530 for the same price of this useless laptop.
  4. The ideapad 2 yoga looks good. but it's smaller than you wanted-13.3inch display. I honestly can't think of many worthwhile convertibles other than this (especially any that are 14 in or larger). Also, what's the budget because that could change the recommendations drastically. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/yoga/yoga-2-pro/ High resolution is really nice. alternatively, without convertible stuff the thinkpad x1 carbon touch is good (but again expensive) http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ If you want the longest battery like the thinkpad t440s would probably be your best choice. It's a bulkier ultrabook though so keep that in mind. The battery management system on the new thinkpads has 1 non-removable battery and one hot-swappable one so you can just switch out the removable one as the day goes on (also just really good battery to start with) http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t440s/ I'm not really aware of other brands stuff so keep that in mind. I only know about this stuff because I recently bought myself a thinkpad (t430 with 9 cell and optional 9 cell addon slice, should get a useable 18 hrs with both). They are the beeftank of laptops.
  5. This is the computer I use daily, as it is now. I wish I had logged all the changes it has gone through over the few years I've had it but unfortunately I never did. Oh well Here it is, The Abomination. (I will update with DSLR pics over the crappy phone ones if anyone's interested) First , the specs: i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz MSI P67A-C43 Thermaltake FRIO tower cooler Silverstone Strider Essential 700w Auzentech Xi-Fi Forte pcie sound card 2x 4Ggb corsair vengeance 1600mhz 2x 128gb Vertex 4 in RAID0 2x 1tb 5400rpm Toshiba laptop drives in RAID5 (cheaper than desktop drives where I got them) Beige case that my school was throwing away Gigabyte 7950 Windforce XFX 6870 reference (pcie 1x extension) Obviously not a normal computer. full desk. you can see the inside layout with the 6870 (and associated kleenex box) removed. This pic turned out worse than expected, sorry. closer look The GPU is actually duct taped to the box for added mounting rigidity, when it's installed the box is taped to the desk. just a picture of the box. How I easily connect my flash drives, it's within easy reach and it's mounted with duct tape and meccanno. The drives I use are all held in a Meccano cage because the hole spacing is actually perfect and I had it on hand. Like the 6870 the dvd drive and hot swap bay are all ducked taped for rigidity. whatcha goona do with a case like this? It's not like I can hide the cables anywhere. Simple and effective, not pretty but it's convenient. Simple headphone holder. So that's pretty much my ridiculous rig, I thought you guys would enjoy it. I should have taken pictures of it when it was caseless, just sitting on my desk (or at the LAN). If I make any major changes I'll post an update. So any suggestions on how to improve my awesome rig? Any more pictures in particular you guys want? I'm in the process of designing a lasercut wooden case to house my computer but that's not going to get any meaningful progress for at least another long time, I will definitely update when i do that (maybe even get some noctuas and some paracord B) ).
  6. Back on topic. I understand what you mean, it's part of the reason i've got an old thinkpad x60t as my only laptop (because it has a stylus and i can take math and chem notes in MS paint, i can type everything else out). I'm looking to upgrade and I don't like the weaker hinge they had to use (because 2 axis swivel) so i was looking for alternatives. i found this: http://www.improvelectronics.com/products/boogie-board-sync-9.html It's not out yet but it should be reasonably cheap. Minor problems are that you can't write in colour but it has good battery life and appears to be reasonably functional. I haven't really been able to find anything better though so I'd like to see other recommendations.
  7. For those who don't know, the MakeyMakey is an interesting arduino based board that allows you to turn basically anything into a peripheral. Everything from your seat to a set of bananas can become a computer input. I'm really curious what you guys will think of this unorthodox peripheral. I think it's an awesome idea which allows for hilarious and interesting new forms of gameplay (dance dance revolution with buckets of water looks really fun). It might also help with virtual reality when you can make your own objects computer inputs (like grabbing a knife at your belt and swinging it could be bound to melee attack or something). It could also be a creative way for young children to use computers or play games. (image taken from linked website) http://www.makeymakey.com/ http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f082/ ($60 to buy) So what do you guys think? Is it a stupid gimmick, an awesome one, a revolutionary idea or something else entirely?
  8. Personally I'd rather just see a GPU with DCU II quality electronic components but able to fit a standard (reference) waterblock. I really doubt the Poseidon will match the performance of dedicated waterblocks (so the better components would be of less benefit). That, and I really don't like the look of it, but thats just me.
  9. Theres a good reason you've never been able to actually make a good laptop with standard parts. The form factor requires layouts that simply can't be standardized. This phone will be at least 2 of the following, likely 3: flimsy, expensive, massive or have very few actual options. No matter what it will most likely be flimsy and massive just given how they think the design should work. I really want it to work, but the problem is that it likely just won't.
  10. Thanks, this looks like it would be pretty much fine for what I need. I've been scouring different forums but never thought to see actual footage of it (I feel kind of dumb). I found a bunch of different forums where the question was discussed but it never led to a conclusive answer.
  11. Any 3d CAD program requires a lot of single threaded performance and, in a laptop of this size, AMD simply can't match intel. Not to mention I haven't been able to find any laptops to match the x230 in terms of durability, usability or battery life in it's size category. The only reason I would change the laptop is if it simply can't do what I need it to-which I'm very worried about because it is a big investment and pretty weak hardware.
  12. the new ASUS impact board looks really awesome. If i had enough for a new build with it that's what I'd go for. Otherwise I'd go sabertooth because it matches my case better and actually looks OK with noctua fans.
  13. I want to know how good the hd4000 GPU is for CAD applications like Solidworks and Autodesk inventor. The laptop I'm looking at (thinkpad x230) only has the hd4000 graphics available and I need a laptop for school. Keep in mind that the resolution of the screen is 768x 1366. This computer will be used for modelling and NOT rendering. I also don't particularly care about "pretty" things like nice textures or lighting. If anyone has any experience running either autodesk inventor or Solidworks on a computer with hd4000 I'd like their say. Basically what are the minimum system requirements to reasonably run Solidworks and Inventor.
  14. I'm liking my nexus 4 and at $200 it's honestly just the best value phone for what you want. It's perfectly durable so long as you get a soft case for it and are reasonably careful. I don't baby my phone either, it's been to the machine shop and been in my pockets while biking. Because it's a google phone you get no unstable add ons and everything pretty much just works.
