jorenc got a reaction from Pocketmouse in How much room should I give my GPU's fans to properly cool it?
Enough room = yes. If you do vertical mount, it will run hotter, but unless your GPU is clocked to where every degree counts, you'll experience no issues whatsoever. Modern GPU's are great at handling heat. Even if it was pressed up against the tempered glass, you're not going to even get close to 70C.
Imo, the GPU down a slot looks worse than tubes pressing against a GPU in the top slot.
Listen to Luke, "Just do it. It'll probably be ok."

This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiVWQthb-20&list=LLn2K_CIOpAmKNVfv93VUiHw&index=60&t=115s
Probably the most concise and simple way to explain it, but I'll do my best to help:
- Motherboard: think of it like the hub of your PC. EVERYTHING will in one way connect to the motherboard. As such, a better motherboard (mobo) doesn't really mean better performance. A better motherboard correlates to quality, longevity, safety of components, other bells and whistles you'll never use, etc.
- CPU: it's the brain of your computer. Every click, command, whatever is controlled by the CPU. It will handle most tasks and tells other components what to do. Any AMD Ryzen 5 or an Intel i5 will do everything you want.
- Memory/Ram: if the CPU makes commands and sends those commands around the computer, it needs a funnel or roads to send those commands. This is your RAM. It's gigabyte storage designed to handle chunks of commands in the short term. More RAM = more space for commands (but you really only need 16 gb).
- GPU: everything you see on the screen comes from the GPU. Any visual effect or render will be crunched by the GPU. If you want performance, spend most of your budget.
I'm bored, I won't finish for every component but these are the major ones so you get the idea. Watch the video

jorenc got a reaction from Orx24 in Is a new I5-8400 enough to justify a gtx 1070?
Absolutely! the i5-8400 is a BEAST! Like I know you can't overclock it but its price to performance ratio is arguably the best of coffee lake

jorenc got a reaction from Damascus in Just Need a Case! ($4000 CAD Build)
See I have an Evolv ATX (the TG one) but I can't relate to this horrid airflow.
Like sure, I can see it's definitely not optimal by any means. But I have never had anything close to an overheating issue because of it. My radiator is front mounted (better for CPU) in a push/pull config and it doesn't go above 70C.

jorenc reacted to Oshino Shinobu in what motherboard do you need for a 8700k
There's multiple chipsets you can use, but to get the most out of the K SKU i7 8700, you'll want a Z370 chipset motherboard.
EDIT: Actually, it's more accurate to say that there will be multiple chipsets you can use, but right now Z370 is your only choice AFAIK. H and B series for the 8th gen Intel CPUs should be coming fairly soon.

jorenc got a reaction from Ironi in Gtx 1050 ti or rx 560 w/ freesync
Calling all AMD fanboys!!!
I would recommend the 1050 ti. Until 2017, the Intel/Nvidia combo was at the top (for like 5+ years) so a lot of current software is still optimised for Nvidia cards (DX11 is still far more common than DX12). In terms of consistency, the 1050 ti will offer a better all around performance

jorenc reacted to TurbulentWinds in will i5-4440 3.1ghz bottleneck MSI GTX 1060 6GB
I often see people overestimate the importance of a powerful CPU. You do not need an i7 or even an i5 for gaming. The difference between the tiers is often nonexistent or only a few frames. Any cash you spend on a CPU over a GPU when you already have an i5, is a bad choice if you are looking to push the best graphics and frames within budget. Money is better spent on the GPU than CPU for gaming. Streaming is different. Editing is different. Gaming is all about GPU horsepower with a ok to decent CPU to back it up.

jorenc reacted to TurbulentWinds in will i5-4440 3.1ghz bottleneck MSI GTX 1060 6GB
A. That is an "S" series processor which is optimized for lower power draw with moderate performance drop. So it does not compare well.
B. No, it doesn't. Unless you are playing highly CPU intensive games such as a turn based, RTS or simulation, a 4th gen i5 is not going to bottleneck the 1050. I have a 1050 Ti and a i5 3470, which is a weaker CPU and stronger GPU. Guess what, the GPU is always the bottleneck, besides in intensive RTSs.
If I am wrong, can you upload some benchmarks proving the CPU as a bottleneck?

Will it fit? - no Idea
Will it play games in 1080p properly? - yep thats not going to be a problem
Can I use it for fast rendering 1080p video's? - yep, Ryzen does well here
Does it look dope? - If it fits then yes it would be totally dope

at 4k, probably.
at 1440p, just a tad but a 1060 is an entry 1440p card anyways.
at 1080p, lol no you're good

jorenc reacted to Brooksie359 in Tell me which processors to pick with my Graphics card
An i3 8100 would be probably a good cpu to pair it with of you want to save money. What are you doing with your computer? Just gaming some streaming or content creation?

jorenc got a reaction from saltbox23k in How Do I Install Case Fans??
Hey man!
I have this exact same case, and don't feel alone dealing with fans in this case can suck!!
So the long screws are meant to be screwed into a radiator. You would thread the screw through the fan hole, the bracket on the case, and finally the radiator. Case fan screws are just weird, but it's the same idea minus the radiator.
Hope this helps!
