DocSwag got a reaction from The Linux Hero in Should I be worried of SSD "write limit"?
The write limit is usually very high. Manufacturers tend to give very conservative ratings for them whereas in reality you can write a lot to the ssd. Especially if you're getting a 2tb ssd for storage, that means that if you, say, wrote 100tb of data to it, you'd only have used up 50 write cycles.

It's not something you should be worried about; even if you do exceed the SSDs actual write limit the JEDEC spec states that your ssd needs to be able to hold the data on there for 12 months. Basically, once you hit the write limit your ssd will basically not let any more writes through to it and become read only, so you can get all your data off it.

On a side note, which SSDs are you looking at?

Ok, so this happened quite recently. It's a type of story that we've all probably heard multiple times but whatever, we can always hear it again!

So I was at this store where they sell herbs yesterday, and this guy is asking if they have a certain herb that stars with a "j" (I forgot the name of the herb). So I watch as the people there look around the store seeing if they could find it and they also look at the computer which they use when people buy stuff there (I assumed they were looking through their catalogs of all the things they had in stock). Upon not finding any results I watch as one of the people there goes over to another one of their computers that has the monitor positioned so I could see it. I was far enough away that I couldn't completely make out the words on the screen but I was close enough that I could sorta guess what they were typing. So I watch as they go over to the computer and delete whatever was in the url bar and then start typing. Wait, that's strange, it looks like the word they typed start with a "g". I thought the person said the word starts with a j. Maybe he said g (the guy's English wasn't the best) or maybe I just can't see the letter properly. I then watch as the person types out the word. Wait a second, it doesn't seem long enough. They hit enter.

Then I realized they typed Google. So yeah. They googled Google in order to google herb.

After that they clicked on the first result and then typed in the herb.

I'd heard a lot of the googling Google stories before, but I never thought I would ever experience it. I guess I was wrong.

Still, it escapes me how people don't realize that whatever they pe in the url address bar is getting googled... Don't they ever realize the page they get after typing Google in there is awfully similar to the one they search in?

Shucks, it looks like I have what's probably the best school for hardware 'n stuff out of anyone on this thread... Our IT guys are pretty cool, and this year we got a new robotics teacher who's a computer engineering major...

Shoot, we even have a club basically dedicated to engineering and stuff... We get to solder stuff together and this year it seems we're gonna get to play around with Arduinos...

The only thing missing is a computer hardware class. I swear, there's all sorts of programming classes and science classes but there isn't one computer hardware class.

Are you stupid? All those terabytes accelerate your CPU's data rate causing the scheduler to overclock which accelerates the CUDA calculations of the cache causing much higher performance!

DocSwag got a reaction from Alexlotta in What's the fastest M.2 SDD that an ASUS Z97-C will support?
Your motherboard only supports up to pcie gen 2 x2, or 10 gb/s. That's not that much faster than sata, and means any decent m.2 ssd is gonna get bottlenecked by the connection.

Question though, why do you want an m.2 ssd? If it's for boot times and app launch times, forget it, since m.2 doesn't improve boot times or app launch times when compared to most sata SSDs.

Sleep mode means your pc state is saved in ram so your ram HAS to be on in sleep mode to store the state. You can't turn it off. Either turn off the rgb entirely or maybe you can try using hibernate

Which specific monitors are you looking at?

I also don't know if a 120 hz monitor really is worth it. There seem to be very few games that support 120 hz on the xbox one x. And I don't know if support will increase in the future since very few people use a 120 hz monitor with an xbox; most of the time it's a 60 hz TV.

Maybe a 1440p 60 hz IPS monitor with freesync would be your best bet? Freesync is probably the thing you would want for gaming

You're aware that's in USD right? So it's probably about $250 over budget.
Parts wise, the PSU isn't any good, you shouldn't buy a 500GB spinning rust HDD, and the A series motherboards aren't much good.
There's no point in looking at pricing until Black Friday, if you're on that much of a budget.

I guess you're talking about SATA SSD versus NVMe SSD? There are both types on M.2 and even the same type of SSDs can perform very differently, you have to mention the models you'll looking at.

DocSwag got a reaction from alexonpeace in Samsung NVME (OEM) PM981 SSD Speed issues
Basically you SSD uses TLC (Triple Layer Cell) flash, which gives a lot higher storage density and is much cheaper than SLC (single Layer Cell) (you can have triple the capacity as SLC) but performance takes a hit (especially write performance). Samsung usually has a feature that makes some of the flash into SLC that acts as a cache so that when you write to the drive it gets filled up first.

Your write speeds look like what I'd expect if SLC caching wasn't enabled... usually I think there's a setting in Magician for that but unfortunately since it's a PM drive it's considered OEM and isn't supported by Magician.

You could try updating the NVMe driver through Windows but idk what else you could do.

DocSwag got a reaction from mrchow19910319 in Snapdragon 8xx 7xx 6xx what’s the really world difference?
It really depends on what device you're using them with. If the manufacturer did a decent job with their customization of Android, you'd probably be fine with even a 6xx level of SoC (look at the Pixel 3a, google did a solid job on the software side and it performs fine). Modern 6xx SoC's perform like a Snapdragon 835 from 2 years ago, which still holds up pretty well compared to the snapdragon 855 in real world performance. As a quote from Anandtech's Pixel 3a review:
    and
I'd also argue that there's a lot of other factors you should look at, e.g. amount of RAM and storage type (usually UFS storage is going to be a fair bit better then eMMC and result in quicker application load and install times).

So you'd mostly be fine with a 6xx or 7xx device as long as the software isn't too bloated. As an owner of a snapdragon 835 Pixel 2 XL, who's SoC has similar CPU performance to modern 6xx and 7xx SoCs, it mostly is still very snappy, and only occasionally do I encounter small bits of slowness. Something with an 8xx will be a little better, but the difference will be small

DocSwag reacted to porina in Is this RAM Optane thing faster than NVMEs?
I said already, it particularly excels at low QD random reads. In that use case, my 900p 280GB is about 5x faster than my 970 Evo, and "only" cost 4x as much per capacity at the time of buying. Flash might be cheaper but it performs way worse. The only storage I used that was faster was a ramdisk, and that's about double the price per capacity again over Optane (at the last time I looked).

PCIe 4.0 doesn't change the performance of the storage types. It increases sequential slightly over PCIe 3.0 until we get better controllers.

Optane drives have worked on AMD systems form day 1. The only Intel tie in is if you want to use Intel's cacheing software. With AMD, you can use either AMD or other 3rd party software to do similar.

I'm not saying everyone should get Optane, but the fact is it does have performance that no other flash reaches. If you need it, you need it. If you don't, for sure, buy something cheaper. Samsung and Toshiba have tried to re-create something like Optane using nand, but while improved they're still not as fast, and still cost far more than regular flash.

I cannot recommend whatsoever going for a 6700k on a H110. You can't overclock with that board and you're overpaying for a 3 year old processor that gets beaten by almost all Ryzen non-APU CPUs for less money (case in point: Ryzen 5 2600). Hell, you can even go for a Ryzen 5 3600 and still stay sneakingly under $500

I think you could wait out with your RX480 (unless it's dying) and save up some money so you can get a GPU you actually like for a build you're actually happy with rather than sticking a mild upgrade on the GPU from an RX480 to RX580 (waste of money in my opinion) and spending money on a CPU you can't take full advantage of and on a motherboard you're not happy with (can't do Crossfire although SLI/Crossfire is dying out unless you're a media creator or an enthusiast for that stuff).
