I would say CPU, but to upgrade CPU you will have to also change motherboard and memory, the 8350/8370 was top of the line for FX. Plus the GPU's are still ridiculous expensive. Grab a new Ryzen 2600/2700x and be happy for many years to come.

Kenrou reacted to epsilon84 in Worth upgrading 1800X to 2700X?
Not worth it IMO. You're losing £100 for a <10% performance gain. The 2700X is definitely faster, but not by enough to warrant an upgrade to me. Your call though.

Kenrou reacted to porina in Struggling to get 4.7 GHz OC on an i7-8700K
If you're happy that 4.7 is P95 stable (10 minutes isn't enough) you can try pushing further clock with AVX offset. This is how much clock multiplier is reduced when running software like Prime95. Other software could run further. So you could set 4.8 and AVX offset of 1, so that other software will run 4.8, P95 and similar at 4.7 still. Beware other software may trigger the offset, if they use AVX also. Cinebench R15 is a starting point to find non-AVX stability.

If you see any overclocks at 5 GHz+ without sub ambient cooling, that almost certainly is NOT running full fat P95. Some OC'ers run an old version that is weak like skimmed milk.

I don't have notes on me, from memory my 8350k does 5.0 at least bench stable but I think I've had to use AVX offset of 3.

    You have 2 options:
Upgrade to a 7700K without changing the motherboard. Upgrade to a new platform such as Z370 or AM4. I myself upgraded to a 1700X from a 6600K because I had similar issues but in case your case I recommend going for a Z370+i7 8700K.

Wanted to jump on the Coffee Lake bandwagon, but 8700k's were nowhere to be seen apart from one place looking to rape your wallet. 8600k wasn't that much better, so in the end I got the 8350k to play with. At 4c4t I thought it might make cooling easier for some heavy overclocking fun.

I got the Asrock Z370 Pro4 as the cheapest non-MSI mobo. Cooling I went all out, and got the Noctua D15 (I find AIOs more pain to use when tinkering). Ram is Corsair, I think it is part of their Vengeance series rated on the box at 2800 but the XMP include a 3000 profile which I'm using.

Ok, not the best photo or setup, but it is enough to run. Oh, in case anyone is curious, the GPU is only there to get things going (in case the built in GPU affects CPU bench results). It's an R7 260X and the original cooler died so I replaced it with a Wraith that came with my R5 1600.

Don't like the bios but I am more used to Asus. voltage adjustments can be made either fixed or offset, but it doesn't give much of a clue where I'm starting from. At least I've not found a software tool that can read it in Windows, other than the VID.

I started using hwbot last weekend, and it seems no one else has started populating results for this CPU yet. Just to get a CPU-Z clock logged, I managed to get a submission at just over 5.1 GHz, but it was only just stable enough to do that and nothing else.

Backing down to 5.0 GHz, I thought I'd try and stabilise it for some other benches. It took +275mV offset to get it to pass Cinebench 15, eventually scoring a best of 848. I also threw in a R11.5 run before I called it a night. These benchmarks will not be its strength area due to lack of HT.

Reported VID during that exceeded 1.5V! Temps were ok still, reaching a logged peak of 78C.

I'm more interested in some other single thread benchmarks later... at some point I also will try a delid to see what that does to temps.

Kenrou got a reaction from yian88 in fx 8300 random voltage spikes on manual V
Your motherboard was not meant to take anything higher then a FX-4300, which is a 95w 4 core and you currently have a 125w 8 core (advertising is very misleading, just because it can run doesn't mean it will run well). If you do not cool the VRM section you risk burning up your system in a very literal sense, my advice to you again would be to get a better motherboard if you want to stay with that 8300. Otherwise upgrade to a Ryzen/Intel. Another thing you can try to see it it helps any is to completely reset the BIOS, turn the power and the battery off for a couple minutes.

Shit (and i mean that literally) VRM section "4 + 1 Power Phase Design", please upgrade to a (minimum) 6+2 or at the very least put a couple of fans on top. The FX series 8 cores are very power hungry and hot

You don't NEED 3000 MHz, it's a sort of thing that's preferable but not necessary.

If you're streaming I think Ryzen would be preferable seeing as you don't have an Nvidia gpu. However, you are using an rx 480 and I'm not sure if that would tax the CPU enough to heavily affect streaming. Either way, I think going for a 6700k or 7700k would be enough for streaming, you may just have to turn down stream quality or something.

Assuming streaming isn't something you're REALLY focused on, I think a 6700k or 7700k would be a better choice.

English is far from being my 1st language, thank you    With your current motherboard i don't see much in way of upgrade, if you get a 1090T or 1100T you will be trading Mhz for cores unless you have the cooling (and luck) for a good overclock. FM2 would be a downgrade unless you get something current (and even then...) and you would still have to buy a new motherboard along with the CPU.

AMD Black Editions have unlocked multipliers and base clocks(FSB). Non-Black Edition's only have Base clocks unlocked. Your validation shows a 19.5 multiplier and stock is like 16 i think. You have a Black Edition.

Absolutely the ryzen 3 1200 and an overclockable b350 motherboard. Its 4cores and 4 threads are hard to beat at the price, especially seeing as you can get them to 3.6-3.8 ghz

IPC or Instructions per Clock is what makes a chip more powerful and better.
It's the number of instructions that can be executed each clock cycle on the chip, so think of it like this. If I can run really fast but can only do 1 thing each time I go around the racetrack but my buddy runs a little slower but can do 3 things per cycle, he'll be more efficient. Obviously there is more to it than that but just the easiest way I can think of to explain it.

The FX CPUs starts to stop at around 4.8GHz ~ 4.9 GHz.
In most situations, you'll either be capped before 5.0 GHz, or you'll need a TON of voltage for it to keep stable (e.g. 1.5V+) which you will need a water cooler to maintain.

50*C also seems to be on the low side for 1.375V -- it's not ridiculous, but low.
What program are you using to monitor temperatures?
Keep in mind, a few temperature monitoring programs can't read / measure temperatures correctly on AMD CPUs.

The GA-970A-UD3P is a decent motherboard, but not the best -- more particularly, in the power phase / VRM department.
It is "advertised" as a 8+2 VRM system, but in fact, really a 4+1 doubled up...giving you 8+2.
A TRUE 8+2 VRM will be significantly better (e.g. found on the ASUS Crosshair V Formula, or Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 and UD7).

See if you can even reach 4.7 / 48 GHz first, and how much voltage that will need.
If you can do those frequencies at around ~1.4V, then you may have a chance at 4.9 or 5.0 GHz.

My FX-8350 can do 4.8 GHz with ~1.4V, but needs 1.45V for 4.9 GHz.
5.0 GHz is not 100% stable when it's getting all eight cores roasted -- even with close to ~1.5V.
Plus, the air cooling I have on it can't handle the heat for long.

So basically (very basically because it doesn't work exactly like this) a
fx 8 core @6.08ghz, would be equivalent to a ryzen at 4ghz. It's all about how the silicon works together.

Except that people can't differentiate from the R7s and the 7700K in blind tests.

Level1Techs did a double blind test to tackle the "ryzen gaming is smoother" and the "7700K is the better gaming chip, hands down" myths. They concluded, that with the exception of a few more hiccups with their Intel machines (7700K and a 5960X @ 4.2GHz), people really cannot differentiate between Ryzen, Haswell-E, and Kabylake in gaming, 99% of the time, and the 1%, the Ryzen is marginally better.

As it stands, I'm far more willing to recommend the 1700 than the 7700K. Better multitasking whilst gaming, better streaming, and you get more for your money in the long run.
