  1. Hello all, I've purchased an ASUS TUF A15 back in July 2020 and had some initial driver problems. After I've used the ones from the ASUS website (https://www.asus.com/de/Laptops/For-Gaming/TUF-Gaming/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-A15-FA506/HelpDesk_Download/) it worked fine. Some time ago the issue reoccurred and I fixed it by using DDU and reinstalling the ASUS driver. (Probably windows update screwing me over) Today however the issue reappeared and nothing seems to fix the issue. Since I've had it for quite a long time now and done some extensive googling but could not find any answer I'm now turning my attention to actively searching for help. Full Specs: ASUS TUF A15 15" (FA506IV) Ryzen 7 4800H with iGPU RTX 2060 (NVIDIA driver 460.89) 16GB DDR4 3200MHz 1TB HP EX920 M.2 SSD 512GB Kingston M.2 SSD (OM8PCP3512F-AB) Win 10 20H2 BIOS 315, 314, 309 (persists across different versions) External Monitor: LG24M35 Other Accessories: ASUS Xonar U7 MK II with Sonic Studio (Only since January. Not before. So probably not related to issue.) I've tried Radeon software 21.2.3 from AMDs website and the one from August on the ASUS website with the same results. The ASUS one has worked before. I've had no luck with the one from the AMD website directly so far neither in July/August nor now. NVIDIA driver was always (when it worked and now that it doesn't) a half way recent-ish one from the NVIDIA website directly. (Currently 460.89) I've also checked the laptop power profile and it is on high performance in windows. Core Temp is always running and reports a max CPU temp of 96°C which is within AMD spec and this laptop is known for it's bad cooling performance. GPU will hover around 86°C after extended load periods. Games tested: The Crew 2: Sometimes works. But most times does not. And when it works usually only for a few minutes. Engine: No Idea DirectX: 11 Here you can see the regular but irregular stutters. It does not go away after loading or whatever and is always only a single frame affected. The most annoying type of stutter. This specific screenshot is even from the main menu. Human Fall Flat: Seems to work whenever I start it. Also notice the slightly different colors of the OSD. This is also visible in person. Don't know what that's about. Engine: Unity DirectX: 11 Drone Racing League Simulator: Was affected on a previous occasion. Does not seem to be affected this time. (Only started twice until now.) Engine: Unity DirectX: 11 F1 2020: Was heavily affected the first time. First got my attention to the issue. Was a solid indicator up until now. Also affected this time. Engine: Ego DirectX: 12 I don't know what else I should try at this point. It does not seem to be Engine or DirectX related since it happens in multiple engines and DirectX versions. It does not seem to be OS related since I've had the problem on Windows 10 1909, 2004 and now 20H2. I've also reinstalled windows back in July to try and alleviate the issue but it had no effect on the performance. I'm totally done with this problem and would love to just get another laptop but that's not in my abilities at the moment. I've also noted that when I'm playing a youtube video in chrome on my second monitor unaffected games run just fine. But as soon as the video finishes and the suggestion boxes pop up (no autoplay) the stutters even affect unaffected games until I click on the next video. I've made sure to not have any electron apps open during testing as they might affect the testing since chrome can also. Any advice is appreciated. If you need more info just ask.
  2. Here is the output of the command: lshallo@LINUX-SRV:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep hold lshallo@LINUX-SRV:~$ sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep hold Nothing much to go off of. lshallo@LINUX-SRV:~$ sudo apt autoremove Reading package lists... 3. If I were you I would do the following: Upgrade my gpu to the 3070 when it launches and becomes available (might be after christmas) or look for a used 2080 Ti for <$449. (I would suggest not paying more than 449 for a 2080Ti since you get a card without warranty and slightly less performance as we know now than the 3070 so it should be cheaper than a 3070) If you are still struggling with your goals I would then upgrade the processor and mainboard aswell. Would suggest a Ryzen 7 5800X + a B550 board. In the process of installing the quite power hungry 3070 you might need to upgrade your power supply. I don't know what you currently have so this is just a precaution. Here is a breakdown of your budget and new and old parts: You can keep your RAM since it is 3200MHz which is not the fastest for ryzen but considered adequate und quite reasonable price to performance. BUT you have to make sure it is actually running at 3200MHz. Currently your super fast 3200MHz ram is running at 2400MHz since your mainboard ist not configured correctly! Also I forgot in my calculation that you will need a CPU cooler since the 5800X does not come with one. So add about 30-40 bucks for that. To sum up the upgrades: RTX 2060 > RTX 3070 (2080Ti) | Performance ~+52% (Took the performance of a 2080 Ti as comparison) i7 8700 > R7 5800X | Performance: From 6 to 8 cores. Percent improvement difficult to do atm since the 5800X is not released The rest of the parts are just to make everything compatible so no performance improvement there. Additionally for this thread and the success of your upgrade it would be really helpful if you link your system at the retailer where you got it or take pictures of the inside especially the power supply and it's sticker. Also you should make sure the 3070 fits into your case. It's quite a long card. Also I would highly recommend you read up on hardware encoding with nvenc. It will probably help you if you are not using it atm. That's why I asked for your OBS settings.
  4. Or them just recommending your system ram and not the ram needed by the game. I never have filled my 16GB on any of my system even with IDE (1.2GB+), Chrome and a Game and OBS. I really need to try to fill up 16GB. Currently programming in leaflet. Need all the docs. Also using cherrypy so have those docs open. Also researching for linux server command issues. A few tabs. Pretty standard. My friend is even more extreme with >50 tabs at any one point and he also constantly insists he has to have all of them open. An he only has 12GB RAM.
  5. Don't know about that. Have one game in my >200 game library that I know uses about 12GB of ram and could be a problem when having chrome open and OBS at the same time, but it would still fit. Right now having chrome open with 18 tabs, OBS open and recording a game I'm at 11,5GB memory usage. I don't think it will exceed 16 very often and it would just go to waste.
  6. I don't think increasing memory will help much if any. And I don't think he needs to upgraded to 12 cores or something to achieve his goal. Switching OBS to nvenc hardware encoding and getting a 3070 should be sufficient.
  7. I have unscrewed 2 screws and disconnected the display. Then replaced it with a display with 99% sRGB and 144HZ, IPS from BOE. I've not had a thermal related crash on this laptop. It is running super hot and the gpu and cpu will clock down a bit to keep the thermals in check. It has not come to the point that I found it unusable and generally you don't notice that it's running as hot when not monitoring the temperatures. I've just run furmark + cpuburn and the CPU stayed at 99.5°C and the GPU at 83°C while clocking down a bit from 1650 to 1525MHz. I only plan to keep this device for about 2 years and then sell it so long life of the compontens is not my first consideration. And AMDs spec for the laptop parts is 110 or 115°C TjMax which this device is still below even if marginally so it should not have negative effects on the components during their normal lifespan (whatever that means, probably guarantee window). But if you can stretch it I would recommend you go with another model. The display replacement is not super hard so after watching a video you could probably do it. But after you've done that you're basically at the price of the other models from Lenovo or MSI which does not help the case. Me being a super cheapskate I've sold the old laptop display for about the price of the new panel so the upgrade was basically free.
  8. Well he could sell it after buying the 3070 and a new PSU assuming of course he can live with going over the budget for a few weeks. We don't know but that's what I would do in that case. And selling a 2060 should not be a problem. But we don't know what he is doing to record his gameplay etc. and he is also asking very much >100fps for as little budget as possible which is no easy task in that game. He might be helped by using nvenc instead of cpu encoding, but we don't have enough information to decide on that yet.
  9. Selling the 2060 should cover a new PSU
  10. You could download CPU-Z: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html And please screenshot every tab in that program (except for bench and about). Like so: That would help everybody in here. Also it would help to know if your system was bought complete as one unit and where it was bought (walmart, microcenter, mifcom, maingear). Super helpful would be a link to your system where you bought it! This will help us determine if you need a new power supply to go with a 3070 upgrade. If you don't like CPU-Z for whatever reason go with HWINFO64 and screenshot the main overview page: https://www.fosshub.com/HWiNFO.html?dwl=hwi_632.exe Should look like this: Also what are you using to record the game? What encoder are you using e.g. in OBS? You can see your encoder here: While you're at it please open the windows task manager (in case you don't know how to do that: right click your taskbar and select "task manager"). Leave it open in the background. Then go into CoD and record with OBS like you normally would for about 3-5min. Then stop the recording and exit the game as quickly as you can and return to the still open taskmanager and screenshot the CPU and GPU sections in the performance tab. Should look like this (mine is german, sorry):
  11. I recall everything I've said... Just did a quick sanity check running furmark and monitoring power in GPU-Z.. Max board power is 90W so it seems this is a new 1F15 2060 but still with a limited bios. But the info with the 1F15 still stands. If a review you are seeing has this info and it is not 1F15 it can't be 115W. But if it is 1F15 as you can see it does not mean it's 115W it may also be 90W as supposed to 80W of the original 2060 mobile version. Since even I didn't catch that even that I was aware of the new 2060 it's really hard to tell. I've read the GL65 from MSI has the new 115W, but the review I've found listed 1F11 as model number which is contradicting information. I've also read the Lenovo Legion 5 seems to have the new 2060 model:
  12. To my knowledge that is the case, yes. (Correction: 1F15 is indeed the new model but the bios might still be limited to 90W instead of 115W). That's how I picked this laptop... And also it was ridiculously cheap. 950€ for a 4800H and a 2060 But beware before buying that you probably want to replace the screen as it is quire horrific. And also the cooling is pretty on edge and the CPU reaches 103-105°C. Reference this video for more info:
  13. Here is GPU-Z from my ASUS TUF A15. In the device id you can see "1F15" which indicates the new version (90W in this bios from ASUS). Might also be 115W on other models but never the old 80W version. So this is a first indicator but you will still need to find detailed reviews that mention this.
  14. Yes I did do-release-upgrade Yes apt install --fix-broken has also run multiple times. When I try to install the dependency, that dependency also fails and creates a long chain of dependencies that I have to install for every package since it can't do it automatically. It would also mark all dependencies as manually installed which is not optimal when it comes to removing unused software. My biggest problem atm is, that no broken packages are listed so I have no point to attack and try different things. It's just plain: "You have held packages" dpkg doesn't list any, so I don't know what to try.
  15. I'm at a total loss. I upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04 lts server without issues. Then when I go to install a new packages I get: lshallo@LINUX-SRV:~$ sudo apt install ffmpeg Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information...
