Like mentioned above try finding the language that is used in beginner classes and learn that, most likely it will be Java. Try to find projects that you like/interested in. Also, put all the projects you complete on GitHub, it will serve as a motivation to post/finish a project, it will also get you used to the GitHub which you will be using in your career. Depends on your aptitude with math, but I would say get a head start on that since that is what a lot of people fall behind on. Good luck

I just don't get it, most that I have seen are super bulky, seem like a pain in the ass to carry and also they seem overpriced for the performance you get.

99% of time the fix only takes two mins to accomplish but it can take HOURS to figure out what that fix is.

    DNS?

Worst case scenario people revert to memorizing direct IPs of websites and the internet feels a little bit more like the old BBS days again.

I'm trying to understand how handing IANA over to the UN or ICANN suddenly means Russia, China, and Iran has free reign to do as they please over IP address allocation. I would assume if it was being handed off to an international body there would be a reasonable due process for this crap.

Also the US is considered to have "pervasive internet censorship" according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_and_surveillance_by_country (too lazy to list sources, you can go find them on there)

ICANN isn't controlled by the UN in any form, not sure why everyone keeps bringing it up. There are over 100 member nations, the likely hood of a decision implementing a form of censorship is slim to none. IANA has been controlled by ICANN for many years with a contract through the Department of Commerce without issue. The only role the DoC and the US government has played in IANA is approving zone changes. ICANN can't simply switch off a domain, they don't control every DNS server. The only server they control is their own. Please give me a specific way in which ICANN could somehow censor information and don't just say "but they control DNS." That's not explaining how they could censor.

When everyone that legitimately understands how the DNS system functions agrees that ICANN can't censor information through DNS control, it's usually a good sign that everyone that says otherwise is a buffoon on the topic.

Also, Republicans want to abolish the DoC so why are they protecting it in this case? Aren't they all for private control of public services?

    Because its a non issue.

    A) They don't control the Internet, they control the designation of IP addresses
    B) ICANN have already had effective control for a long time, this only makes it official
    C) Trump hasn't got a clue what he is talking about
    D) Why is it OK for America to "control the Internet" but not anybody else?

Why even bother coming to the Linux section if you're going to shoot someone down and tell them to go back to Windows and stop complaining about it. @TubsAlwaysWins, I recommend you read the guide linked in my signature. I mostly cover the ways to narrow down a distro, and the differences between and features of some mainstream distros,

I hate when your considered a "computer genius" when you google a problem that someone is having and solve it for them. I didnt know the solution until I looked for it how does that make me a genius. Also when your family or a acquaintance  thinks its ok to call you at any time of the day to ask you questions like "It says here that I just won a free ipad. How does that work? Can you help?". Do you really think people are just give you a free ipad for no reason.

Except IANA doesn't control the internet? The only thing it has a say over is the IP addresses assigned to the US and regulating the use of Well Known Ports. Neither of those being controlled by ICANN will impact the security of the US. Besides, Trump himself has basically called for Internet censorship here in the US.

That is absolutely not how DNS works in the slightest. The only DNS servers that it can manipulate are its own which is in actuality is very low number. DNS servers do not go to the IANA and ICANN to synchronize, they synchronize with all of the other DNS servers across the web.

The US funds IANA because it is in charge of our numbers, Russia and China give funding to ICANN because it is in charge of their numbers, there is no difference. We will likely start funding ICANN as well when IANA is transferred over.

Please for the love of god stop acting like there are central authorities where data has to pass through. That is absolutely not the case and you are absorbing so much nationalist propaganda. You name Russia and China but what about France and Great Britain. They also have oversight on ICANN. They are also major powers in the UN and are both permanent members of the Security Council. Stop acting like the UN is ran by China and Russia exclusively because it isn't. Also, stop with the self-righteous American attitude, it embarrasses the rest of us Americans. America is not innocent when it comes to manipulation.

Here's the problem that I have with that you are saying.

1st: Your entire first half of your post is talking about hypotheticals. First off, no single country is a majority funder. You say Russia and China fund it - yes, true. But so does the UK, Canada, and many other nations. There are, I believe, 111 nations on the Global Advisory Committee.

That would mean for Russia to "take control", they'd need 110 other countries to agree with them. Or at worst, 55 countries.

With that in mind, the US Government still largely controls the Board of Directors for iCANN anyway...

You're talking about situations that "might" happen. Well guess what? I KNOW the US Government is spying on my government, my fellow citizens, and the citizens of our allied countries, including the US's own citizens. I know the US Government doesn't have my best interests in heart.

So why would I - being a Canadian - want a KNOWN violator of freedoms and rights (The US Government, through the un-constitutional use of the NSA), to keep control over this, over a group of over 100 nations that contains (among other countries) the entire free world? If Russia or China want to start some shit, they're gonna have to deal with or overrule the US, and her Five Eyes allies, not to mention the entire EU and other Western Nations?

Let me put it this way: The risk of Russia or China abusing iCANN's control is a LOWER RISK compared to the US Government.

If Russia or China had exclusive control over iCANN, perhaps I would share your concerns. But they do not. They are a tiny minority of those who share control.

Excitedtaco reacted to dalekphalm in Trump: Internet control belongs to US. Period
Except we're not handing over that control to those countries. We're handing that control over to iCANN - which already has control over a decent amount of the Internet (Or more specifically, some of the infrastructure), and has been doing totally fine.

Americans need to consider that most of the Internet Users in the world are NOT American. As a Canadian, I don't trust the US Government. Full stop. I want to take away control from them as soon as possible.

this has nothing to do with free speech or "power over the internet" . ICANN is simply in charge of stuff like assigning domains , IP's etc . They have no control over the content itself , or free speech . That is up to the network providers themselves , but not ICANN

Excitedtaco reacted to dalekphalm in Moving to Canada
First thing I would do, is do your research.

The Immigration Process for Canada is generally a long and expensive process. It can literally take years, and that's just for Permanent Residence Status, not even counting becoming a Citizen (if that's something you even care to do - certainly not required though).

For a Computer Technician, with no experience, you'd be looking at Entry Level. So basically, not much more than Minimum Wage - maybe $30,000/yr CAD. In Toronto, average wages tend to be a little higher, so maybe you'll get something that pays a bit more.

Costing of living in Toronto is among the very highest in Canada. Mostly this is due to cost of Rent or cost of buying property. Rent is going to be well over $1000/month for your own apartment (Unless it's a tiny shithole where you're just as likely to get mugged in your own bed as not).

Getting roommates or renting a room inside a larger apartment or house will help to keep costs down.

You should check real estate listings, apartment listing sites, and Kijiji (Canada's Craigslist lol - hell check Craigslist too). Most people advertise rooms for rent on Kijiji. Even apartments themselves are often listed there too.

Cost of food won't be too much higher than the rest of Canada. Same with utilities and Internet.

As for Internet itself, depends on what you need/want. You can get basic packages for as low as $30 or so, but you're looking at like 6 or 10 Mbps download. I pay $100 (just under) for 150/10Mbps - depending on where you choose in Toronto, a similar package would be available from Rogers or one of the TPIA resellers like TekSavvy (I use TekSavvy).

Utilities, you can expect to pay around $100-200 a month for all utilities, but this is just a rough estimate. It really depends on the specific place you get.

There are jobs in Toronto, yes. But competition is fierce. It's the largest city in Canada, so for every job you apply to, hundreds of others are probably also applying (Possibly even thousands).

In all honesty, you'll probably start out working at Best Buy or Staples doing computer repairs. NCIX has a few locations in Toronto, so you could apply there You won't see Linus though - he hasn't worked for NCIX for years, and he only really ever dealt with their BC locations.

Once you get some experience, you can expect to make at least $40,000/yr, if not more. Once you get a decent amount of experience, that number can easily jump up into the $50-60-70,000/yr range or higher, assuming you continue to grow your skillset. But those salaries are for people who have a good amount of experience, in most cases.
