  1. Back in 2014 the YotaPhone 2 was launched. It had a 5" Amoled display on the front and a 4.7" e-ink display on the back. It was a truly unique phone; but it was quite expensive; around $6-700. Today, that same phone costs under $120 and even though it's 3 years old it's still a unique phone. The phone is made out some type of plastic that seems somewhat rubberized, but it's quite far from making this phone feel like a premium phone. It reminds me a lot of older Nexus devices. A very unusual thing about this phone is the location of the sim card tray. It is sitting behind the volume buttons and in order to take it out you have to remove the that volume button. For specs, we have a Snapdragon 801 CPU, 2GB Ram and 32GB of internal storage. This configuration performs quite well even today and it even gets a score of around 41000 on the Antutu Benchmark. The phone is running Android 4.4 out of the box and you have to manually update it to Android 5 and 6 from there. Luckily it is very close to stock Android and everything works very smoothly from multitasking to gaming to the casual browsing. The back screen is what makes this phone unique and unusual. You could use the e-ink display instead of the regular display without using that much battery. The back screen is very customizable and can mirror the front screen. Technically you can play games, browse the web, text and everything that you would do on the front screen. The e-ink display doesn't have a great refresh rate and if you are in a rush you might as well use the front screen instead. There is only one speaker that is located at the bottom of the phone but it doesn't get too loud and this is something that we see quite a lot with all new smartphones these days. The 8mp camera takes decent pictures even in low light conditions and it is on par with many mid-range phones these days. Personally i got the phone for the e-ink display and for the fact that it looks super cool and well... Because it was super cheap Here is my full video review for the YotaPhone 2:
  2. The Xiaomi Mi 5S is definitely a good looking phone, but is it competitive enough in today's saturated market? Well, for starters, it doesn't cost $8-900 like a Google Pixel or an iPhone. It is made out of metal and glass and looks very elegant and premium, the volume buttons do shake a bit but it isn't very noticeable. The camera used on this phone is the exact 12MP Sony sensor used in the Google Pixel phone. We don't have optical image stabilization but the EIS works good enough for most situations. I have included some sample footage in the review video. Picture taking is fast and the pictures turn out very nicely, but not as nice as they turn out from the Google Pixel; so it has to do a lot with the software optimization. We only have one mono speaker at the bottom of the phone, that gets loud enough, but nothing too special, at par with most flagships these days. The 5.15" screen has a 1080P resolution and that is a bit disappointing. The viewing angles are great and the screen gets quite bright for usage in bright daylight but the bezels around the screen are a bit hideous. Now the software; we have Android 6.0.1 running on the Mi 5S with Xiaomi's skin on top. If you are a fan of iOS, you will most likely like it. No, app drawer and the camera app looks just like the one you would find on an iPhone. You can change theams, and customize the phone however you wish from the Mi theams store. We also get lots and lots of features that none of us will probably get to use... I would say that more useless features than you would find on a Samsung phone for example. I wasn't impressed with the scores that i got for the Antutu benchmark and the Geekbench 4, and im sure it has to to with the Rom that came pre-installed on the device. There is also a fingerprint scanner imbeded in the home button that seems to work well 95% of the time. It is quite accurate, but every now and than it just doesn't want to register any touches. Inside the phone there is a 3100mAh battery that will last the entire day and with about 4h of screen on time, decent enough but not spectacular. For a phone that costs less than $350 i think that it offers quite a lot of value but it could be improved a bit here and there. The camera could take better pictures, the bezels around the screen could be smaller, the battery could last a bit longer. Check out the full review video for more information about the Xiaomi Mi 5S Smartphone!
  3. Umi is yet another smartphone manufacturer from China. Unlike many other Chinese phones, UMI makes some very good looking phones for very low prices. A good example is the new UMI MAX. The phone is made out of aluminum and glass and it looks much more expensive than what it is. The 5.5" screen is covered by Gorilla Glass and it has a resolution of 1080P. The viewing angles are very good but the screen doesn't get that bright and it is difficult to see in bright daylight. Inside there is the Helio P10 Octa Core processor clocked at 1.8GHz and 3GB RAM. The internal storage isn't that great considering that we only get about 11GB free out of the 16GB that the phone comes with. That can be extended with an SD card because the phone runs Android 6.0. Umi Android 6.0 used in the UMI MAX is very close to stock Android without too many useless features. We do have the possibility of using either the on screen buttons or the hardware buttons and you can turn those on or off depending on your preferences. The 4000mAh battery will keep the phone going for 24h with about 5h of screen on time, so realistically more than most flagship devices. You can check out the exact times on the battery in the review video below. Even though the phone it's so cheap it even has a fingerprint scanner on the back that is very accurate and very fast. All you have to do is touch the sensor with the right finger and the phone will turn on. The cameras on the phone are the only things i didn't really like about the UMI MAX. The rear camera has a 13mp sensor and with appropriate light it can take some decent pictures. In low light it takes way too long to focus and the pictures don't turn out great. Feel free to check out some sample pictures in the review video below. Overall for the price the phone is great but it will really depend what matters the most for you. Check out my review video for more detailed information.
  4. There are many Chinese phones available for under $150 but most of them cut lots of corners in order to keep that low price. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 costs under $150 and brings an amazing value for that low price. It's made out of metal, has a 5.5" 1080p screen, a big battery, and a fingerprint scanner. It comes in two variants, one that has a Snapdragon processor and one that it's using a Octa-core Mediatek processor, the Helio X10. I got the one with the mediatek processor and i choose that one because i have used other phones with the same processor and they worked very well. The screen has great colours and viewing angles and gets quite bright; however in direct sunlight it is a difficult to be seen. The battery can last almost 2 days with quite a bit of usage but it charges slowly with the charger provided. The fingerprint scanner that is on the back of phone works great and it's accurate about 99% of the time. The UI is a bit different from the stock Android and it can become a bit annoying depending what you are used to. You can easily install Nova Launcher or any other launcher and change it's look to something closer to stock Android. The rear camera is a 13mp sensor with a f2.2 and it takes great looking pictures in daylight. (check out some samples in my review video). Low light pictures don't turn up good and i would avoid taking any low light pictures with it. Overall for the low price of this phone it brings amazing value. Check out my review video for more detailed information.
  5. The CUBOT S500 is an affordable device costing only around $120. The specs and features of this phone are rather good for this price tag. The phone looks very attractive, has a aluminum frame, and glass on the front and back. It is only 7mm thin. It features the MTK6735A quad-core chipset clocked at 1.3GHz, with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. This is further expandable up to 32GB via a MicroSD card. There’s a 5-inch display with a 720p resolution. The screen has very good viewing angles and it gets very bright. At the back, there’s an 8mp f2.0 camera intrapolated to 13mp with a while up front, there is a 5mp sensor intrapolated to 8mp. Both cameras do a good job in bright conditions. In low light conditions, pictures taken with the rear camera have quite a bit of noise and the camera takes a long time to focus. The camera app comes with many features that aren't normally found in this price range. On the back of the phone there is also a fingerprint scanner. It can store 10 fingers and i found it to work good 95% of the time. It features the same type of sensor like on the Nexus 6P, where you don't have to turn on the phone before scanning your fingers. The screen turns on as soon as the fingerprint is matched with one saved in the phone The device is running Android 5.1. The skin used by the manufacturer is not too overloaded and it goes smooth enough. Features like the "double tap" to wake up are also available. It is unknown if this phone will ever be updated to Android 6.0 The 2700mAh battery is enough to get you thru an entire day. The unfortunate part is that the battery charges extremely slow even with a fast charger. All apps and games work very well on this phone and it seems that the processor combined with the 2GB are a sufficient match. The speaker is sitting on the back of the phone and it sounds a bit distorted at high volumes. This phone doesn't have a notification light and the 3 buttons at the bottom of the device don't light up. Overall, for around $120usd you get a very sleek looking phone that performs great. This phone supports 4G, however the 3G bands aren't that compatible in North America. Check out the review video for more detailed information about this device. Review: Gameplay:
  6. Yeah, i don't know what's going on... The formatting is all off... i think i just fixed it
  7. Something cheap, made out of plastic and the sound quality not that great, right? Well, the Meizu HD50 headphones are the opposite of that. Meizu started by manufacturing Mp3 players at first and later on Mp4 Players. These days, they are actually one of the top 10 companies in China that manufacture smartphones and now, headphones. Their headphones are made out of a light metal and soft leather looking material, plus they only weigh 228 grams. They look great too, it's hard to believe how inexpensive they are given the look and value you receive. The headband is a very flexible band that is covered by a man made leather material, which is quite nice and is at par with the material used on my $300 AKG headset. The inside of the headband is lined with a soft foam material. What i didn't like about the band is the fact that it isn't a bit tigher. If you shake your head hard enough they tend to fall off (check out the video to see what i mean). The cups of the HD50 are a CNC milled aluminum with a sleek design and a lot of attention to detail. They are flat round cups with a brushed nickel finish and a simple but great looking Meizu logo on each side. These headphones have some nice pads that are covered with the same soft material used for the headband. Considering that they are on-ear pads they are very comfortable. The left and right channels are printed on the driver covers. One negative thing about the pads is the fact that they are non removable, therefore they can't be changed. The sound isolation is adequate, but in noisy environments you will need to turn up the volume so you don't hear the outside noise. When listening at high volumes the people around you are able to hear what you are listening. They come with a removable 1.2m untangling cable, a quarter inch adapter, an airline adapter, and a carrying case. The cable has a microphone on it that is also made out of a brushed metal and just like the headphones it looks very appealing. So, what about the sound? Do they sound like $60 headphones? Absolutely not! I can easily compare them with headphones that cost around $120-$150 They have an accentuated bass tuning that carries over into a musical midrange and extended treble response. They're very musical and work with most genres of music. They sound particularly great with modern genres. The bass seems slightly boomy from time to time, but more times than not it is an enjoyable response that brings a nice low end kick to most songs. Connecting interface : 3.5mm Frequency response : 20~20KHz Impedance : 32ohms Sensitivity : 103dB + / - 3dB Microphone sensitivity: -42±3dB These headphones can be found on a variety of websites anywhere from $60 to $120. I got mine for $57usd when they were on sale a couple of weeks ago from a Chinese website. Check out the review video for a better look at these headphones.
  8. This is a very cheap Chinese tablet that can also be used as a phone. I am always surprised that these Chinese items can be manufactured and sold so cheap and even make the company some profit. This tablet costs around $50-$55 depending what website you get it from. The entire tablet is made out of plastic (including the screen). That means that the 7" screen will easily get scratches. The 1024 x 600 vsvga screen has pretty bad viewing angles, and that is one of the reasons why the tablet is so cheap. The tablet has a 64bit quad-core intel atom processor clocked at 1.2ghz and 1gb of ram. This isn't such a bad combination and everything runs quite smooth on the tablet. You can even play games like GTA San Andreas if you don't expect the best gaming experience. Browsing the internet and watching youtube is a decent experience, and probably better than what you would expect. Android 5.1 is the os running on it and that is one of the reasons why it's running so smooth. The OS is very close to stock Android and doesn't have any pointless "features" and that is a good thing. Even though the tablet has a front and rear camera, the only thing that it can really be used for is video calling. Anything beyond that would give you poor results if you would want to take some kind of pictures with it. The 2800 mah battery will make it thru an entire day, but this will depend a lot what the user does with it. This tablet can also be used as a phone, and it takes 2 sim cards. There is also a slot for a sd card. Even thou it is capable of 3G connectivity, it only has one 3g band; the 2100MHz. Most likely you would have to be on 2G, depending where you are located. 2G speeds are way too slow for browsing the Internet therefore, you can only use this tablet for making phone calls and sending and receiving text messages. In conclusion, if it would have a ips screen it would be quite an appealing tablet for the price. Check out the review video for more information about it. Review video:
  9. Currently on the 2nd day on a charge however i have the low battery warning on.
  10. I will start by saying that the Molibao A8 is a gorgeous watch. It looks a lot like the Apple watch, however it doesn't have the same functionality or price tag. This watch costs $49. For that money you get a waterproof watch made entirely out of metal, a 1.54" IPS curved screen, a 2mp camera, a heart rate monitor, a pedometer and a leather strap. The screen looks really good and it has excellent viewing angles. It also gets very bright and there aren't any issues seeing it in bright daylight. I do find it a bit too sensitive and i wish that could be toned down a bit. Watchfaces; well like most Chinese smartwatches, this is an issue. There are only 3 available and i only found one more to install. There are probably more available but it is a bit difficult to find them when everything is in Chinese. The leather strap can be easily changed if you would prefer another one. I do find the one that comes with the watch appealing. The 2mp camera is located to the side of the watch inside the "scrolling wheel" that doesn't actually scroll. Takes ok pictures in bright light, however i don't exactly see myself taking pictures with the watch having my phone in the pocket. It can also record video. The features that i enjoy and use constantly are the pedometer and the heart rate monitor. They seem quite accurate and are a good tool to have. In order to get everything working on the watch you need to install an app on your phone. This can be found in the play store and it's called FunDo Smart device. You can make phone calls from the watch, answer calls, change the songs that are playing on your phone. Every notification that you get on your phone will show up on the watch, but unfortunately you can only answer to sms messages. The 320mah battery will make it thru an entire day without any problems, however it won't make it thru the 2nd day. Overall for $49 you get a beautiful metalic watch with a really nice screen that has some limitations. Check out the review video for a closer look at the A8 Smartwatch. Review video:
  11. The VKWorld VK700 is a super cheap device costing just about $59.99 but with specs that are quite good for this price tag. The phone looks quite good, has a CNC metal frame and a 6.9mm thin body. It features the MT6580a quad-core chipset clocked at 1.5GHz, with 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage. This is further expandable up to 64GB via a MicroSD. There’s a 5-inch display with 720p resolution, which is quite impressive given the price tag. At the back, there’s an 5mp camera intrapolated to 8mp while up front, there is a 2mp sensor intrapolated to 5mp. Both cameras do a decent job in bright conditions, however any pictures taken in low light look pretty bad. This was to be expected for such a cheap device. The device is running Android 5.1 Lollipop OS. Unfortunately the manufacturer decided to use their own launcher so it can add a few "features" to the device. That doesn't work that well; the phone becomes laggy and the offered features are useless. Installing nova launcher makes wonders and the phone becomes quite fast and snappy. Another disappointing thing about this device is the 2200mah battery. It seems quite impossible to get more than 2h of screen time on. Of course, not everyone uses their phone that much, and it js quite possible that the phone will make it through an entire day with moderate usage. Most apps and games work really well on this device even with the 1gb of ram. The phone does get quite hot while playing games. Luckily the heat dissipates quick enough thru the metal frame. This phone doesn't have a notification light and the 3 buttons at the bottom of the device don't light up. Overall, for $60usd you get a good looking phone that cuts some corners in order to keep that low price. Check out the review video for more detailed information about this device. Review: Gaming test:
  12. Due to the popularity of selfies, front facing cameras on phones have improved immensely. Selfie sticks have been available for a while but some of them aren't as practical. The EC Technology Selfie Stick with a bluetooth shutter tries to be different. The stick is made out of a light metal and it extends quite a lot. The grip is made out of rubber so it can be easier to hold. To extend the stick you just have to "unlock" it by rotating it slightly towards the left. To lock it to the desired length you just rotate it in the opposite direction. This selfie stick comes with a bluetooth shutter. This way you don't need to set timer on the phone for each picture. The shutter can also be used without the stick so you can have your bluetooth enabled camera or smartphone on a tripod and take pictures that way. The stick comes with a clamp for smartphones or a mount for a GoPro camera. The clamp is quite strong and ive used it successfully with an iphone 6 and a Nexus 6P. When you are done with the stick just put it in it's pouch (that comes with it) until the next picture perfect moment. The stick costs around $25 CAD from Amazon. Check out the review video to see how to set up and use the bluetooth shutter. Review video:
  13. That would be pretty cool to have. Ive looked at the data used by the app and it doesn't seem to use any
  14. These days everything seems to become "smart". Even though there were smart light bulbs before they were a bit expensive. Now, the Chinese smart bulbs are trying to take over the market with attractive prices. The Lifesmart Smart LED Bulb costs around $20 on a multitude of websites and it does perform quite well. It is very easy to set up, you, just turn it on, open the accompanying app, turn on the bluetooth on your smartphone and you are connected. You can adjust the brightness and the color very easy from the app. The downside is that at a higher brightness it tends to loose the color and it becomes more towards white than anything. This is a 6W bulb so it won't consume that much power and you can basically keep it on quite a lot. I find it useful in the evenings because you can change the color depending on the mood. It even has a mode where it changes the light based on the music that your phone hears. Video Review:
