I have just checked on my work laptop which is W10 and this also connects no problem. This suggests its an issue with my desktop? Any suggestions?

Hi all, I am setting up a Truenas server with Windows SMB shares. I'm a bit of a noob on this but have followed guides to get the volumes, datasets and shares working. I have accessed my windows share from my Windows 11 laptop just as expected including copying and accessing files on the share but when using the same credentials from my Windows 10 desktop it gives me the invalid network credentials error "the username or password is incorrect". I have followed several troubleshooting guides for these including making the networks on both machines set to private and I backed up the network credentials from my W11 and restored them to the W10 to make sure I was not mistyping. I have tried mapping the drive, accessing through explorer address bar and the network section on the bottom left in file explorer. I then changed my Freenas user account password and relogged in on W11 but again W10 gives error. I have created a new user account on my W10 and that gives me the same error, also I tried a PCIE NIC in my pc and assigning it a new IP address on my network, still no dice. Any thoughts or things I can check? Hi all, So firstly I am not an audio connections whizz so apologies if this is a silly question but... Its a bit unconventional but I got some studio monitors and a Q802 mixer on the cheap and want to use the mixer to allow me to play back music from my PC, Bluetooth devices (using 3.5mm BT receiver) and my Echo. Issue is that each of these devices I understand to output an unbalanced stereo signal where the mixer accepts one balanced/unbalanced mono input or two balanced/unbalanced inputs for stereo. I would like to maintain the stereo sound where possible so would it be possible to use a 1/8th inch TRS (stereo unbalanced) to dual 1/4 inch TS (mono unbalanced) connectors? Is there a way to use a single connector for unbalanced stereo rather than balanced mono? I have tried connecting the output of my computer to the input of the mixer but there is obviously the audio distortion created from it trying to balance the two stereo tracks against each other. I have tried to search on forums but don't know if I am the only one trying this or if I am just not searching for the right thing Feel free to tell me its a stupid idea but any feedback would be much appreciated. Ah thanks for the suggestion, its giving me this error but as its not urgent I'll probably just leave it another six months and try again unless there's a way around this .

Sorry if this is the wrong section. So I first set up my forum account using my Steam login but now want to access the floatplane site. Is there any way to get a login for Floatplane using username/email and password from a forum Steam account? I don't mind switching to an email login but it says I need a password which I obviously don't have. I would just set up a new account but I've already paid for my subscription... Many TIA.

Thanks for the suggestion. In addition to the problem of SATA ports I am also restricted on drive bays and SATA power. Do you think it would be worth investing to get my main PC to pull double duty over having a separate NAS?

Hi all, Firstly I know its a bit overkill. So here's the situation. I have 3x3TB new(ish) Seagate HDDs in my main PC. 2 in RAID1 for important info, 1 for games and other stuff. I have recently collected 4x2TB with varying levels of moderate/high use, and yes I know not to trust them...but I'm a student and they were cheap. I am looking to reuse some old parts to build a dedicated NAS device, so I can use all the dries. I have dabbled in freeNAS, but also like the familiarity of Windows. I have just over 1TB of 'mission-critical' data (strong redundancy and some speed for writes) and 2-3TB of other stuff primarily games I want downloaded but am not playing (some redundancy minimum gigabit reads, writes can be slowish) although both of those are only going to increase. They would all be running off a Z97 MoBo onboard SATA controller which I have confirmed to work with all the drives. So I am leaning towards Windows, with a RAID 10 of 2TB drives for non-critical data and RAID 1 3TB drives + 1 standalone. Can anyone think of a better configuration? I have 16GB of non-ECC RAM, which doesn't lend itself particularly well to freeNAS from what I've heard. It seems like for the price of another 16GB of RAM (~£100) or God forbid 32GB of ECC (~£300) I could get a lot of other hardware. I would want to be able to create 'folders' with read-only access for sharing photos and games with friends. I ideally would also be able to assign users space with individual read and write access for the back up of their personal data. Any other OSs worth taking a look at? I distrust RAID5, but how about a couple more drives and a RAID6/Z2 for the 2TB drives? Would SSDs be of any use either as a cache, or standalone storage? Any thoughts questions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Mission critical data: 700GB Basically archived pictures 100GB of files and documents (mostly archived some frequently accessed) 300GB of videos and project files (would just be for archives) Many thanks in advance, Alex

The difference would effectively be 1080p vs 4K vs 4K (rendered down to 1080p). 1080p from 4K looks much better than native 1080p but whether its worth the difference is for you to decide. Bear in mind this is comparing max settings at both resolutions so a 1050 couldn't push that at upscaled 4K or natively. 1x8GB RAM cheaper PSU cheaper SSD Z270 MoBo for OCing Same case which I assume you like. Doesn't really seem to be much between the builds except you can get more with Skylake, and you may choose 240GB SSD plus 1TB HDD over 500GB SSD. My personal recommendation would be to splash another $30 and get the 850 EVO and the Seasonic PSU, and only change the mobo out for a Z270 mATX one. It seems like a really well balanced build. 8GB RAM is a bit on the low side (depending on use case, even just for gaming it can fluctuate wildly), but again you can upgrade that down the road if find you need it, and 8 should be fine for most things. Also I assume you've checked about the BIOS update for using a Kaby Lake CPU in a 100 series board?

Do you not need more than 500GB storage? Or are you re purposing an older mechanical drive?

If you want to spend the $200 difference you could upgrade the 6700K to 7700K and get a Z270 MoBo and a new cooler. Personally I would pocket the difference and save it for a rainy day. PS. The Strix 1080 > reference 1080. Might actually make the most difference in games between the two systems.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, a NAS is a good idea, and I may have to end up going for it, but as I would only be accessing the data from my main PC I would effectively be paying around £1,000 for the caching software, to then be limited in terms of upgrade options and by whatever network connection its got. I had hoped to find an isolated hardware or software solution to allow the same set up inside my PC.

Hi all, INTRO: So I am looking to upgrade my existing storage configuration for video and photo archival in my main PC. I have a UPS, so power failure is unlikely. EXISTING HARDWARE SETUP: 4x3TB RAID 10, but I am rapidly running out of space with 4K footage. I edit videos off a 512GB SM951 which is great but at the end of a project it can take an hour or longer to offload the footage to the archive. UPGRADE: So my plan is to upgrade to 6x3TB drives in a RAID 5/6 (15/12TB usable), but I would need a RAID card to get any reasonable write speed, additionally I would like to get 2 SSDs in a RAID for a write-back cache to accelerate further. SUGGESTIONS: I can find little information online for this kind of setup, can someone recommend a RAID card, or a better configuration? I am an enthusiast, rather than pro video editor, so I am looking for speed and reliability, but preferably in the £100s rather than £1000s. To summarise, something like Intel SRT except with a larger buffer and more configuration options. If I have left anything out, or anything is unclear please ask. TYIA
