For those of you who don't know, one of my other hobbies is credit card churning and travel hacking. That is how i flew to LTX 2019 and back for free. I plan to open up two more credit cards this year and pay my college tuition so I can fly to LTX again this year.

American express's business platinum card includes two $100 dell credits every year as part of the annual fee. So I bought an SSD for my laptop. My annual fee was due on januray 16th, and if you close your card in under 30 days after the annual fee is rebilled, you get a full refund on your card. So I redeemed the dell credit and closed the card to avoid the annual fee again.

Personally I would never shop on dells website like, ever. The prices are stupid. But free is free.

Rest in Peace Windows 7 !!! Even though I never liked Microsoft and their proprietary Softwate you still were the last piece of Software I actually liked using, now Windows 10 was a different story because I then wasn't ready yet to switch full time over to Linux and I was trying out things. So my recommendation for every enthusiast now who is a W7 Veteran, move over to Linux. I mean, as long as you don't need proprietary Software that only runs on W7 and factory machines need to run then finally go enjoy Open Source and Free to use Software. The beauty about Linux is really that there is a Distro for every use case, taste and liking. I now personally use Pop OS as my main Desktop OS and Android 9 for mobile. And you are never bound to one Distro, you can switch and move around as you want really. Just keep in mind that the Terminal can be different from Distro to Distro.

Learned something new today about memory.

I was trying to figure out the actual maximum amount of memory I could install in my thinkstation D30. Turns out if you use 64GB octal rank LRDIMMS, the limit should theoretically be 1TB.

    Let's investigate.

If you know anything about computers, then you would know computers have memory channels. Consumer platforms have 2 memory channels per board, while server and enthusiast platforms can have 4, 6, or even 8 channels per motherboard. These memory channels are run in a sort of "RAID 0" for maximum performance when your computer is working.

    https://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/memory/X9_DP_memory_config_socket_R.pdf

Now most dual socket motherboards from the LGA 2011 platform have 16 DIMM slots like this:

Supermicro on the other hand is special, and they have an LGA 2011 motherboard that looks like this that has 24 DIMM slots. And yes, all 24 DIMM slots can be filled at the same time:

Each memory module in your computer contains "ranks". you may have heard this thrown around in the early days of AMD Ryzen when people figured out faster memory resulted better performance with AMD hardware. A memory rank is essentially a 64-bit wide address space that a CPU uses to access memory, and each memory channel on your CPU can support multiple ranks. Based on my research, consumer platforms will support up to 4 ranks per channel and since they come with 2 channels x 4 ranks = a maximum of 8 possible ranks per CPU.

But here's the fun part: There are Single, dual and quad rank DIMMs. AMD Ryzen supports up to 8 memory ranks in total per board with 4 ranks per channels supported. This means a motherboard manufacturer could in theory produce a motherboard with 8 DIMMs slots. It's just that you could only get all 8 working simultaneously if you used single rank DIMMs in each slot. Conversely, board makers can produce a motherboard with 4 DIMM slots with each DIMM able to hold a maximum of a dual rank memory module. Board makers could also produce a motherboard with 2 DIMMs and people would then only be able to use two quad-ranked DIMMs.

    Back to supermicro.

Supermicro's memory configuration guide for LGA 2011 mentions each xeon e5-2600/e5-4600 processor has 4 memory channels and because this is server hardware, each channel can support up to 8 ranks for a total of 32 possible ranks per processor. This again means supermicro could produce a motherboard with 16 DIMM slots per processor, with each DIMM slot able to hold up to 2 ranks. They could also produce a motherboard with 8 DIMM slots per processor, meaning each CPU can utilize up to 8 quad-rank DIMMs. They could also produce (as they have done here) a motherboard with 12 DIMM slots per CPU able to use a quad rank + two dual rank DIMMs per channel with 4 channels per CPU. Supermicro could also do something really stupid and produce a motherboard with 32 DIMM slots per CPU with each DIMM slot only able to use a single rank dimm if all memory slots are populated.

I can't really find a good analogy for describing how this works other than to say just forget about the DIMM slots for a moment and focus on only the maximum ranks supported per processor. for a xeon e5-26xx CPU, they will support up to 32 ranks per CPU. It doesn't matter how many or few memory slots you add to your motherboard, because if you want to populate all of them the number of memory slots will correspond to the number of ranked DIMMs you can use.

Let's pretend we build an LGA 2011 motherboard with 32 DIMM slots. If we wanted to fill up every single DIMM slot, we would need to use only single-rank DIMMs. We COULD physically install dual-rank DIMMs, but only half of our memory would actually show up in the bios because we would have 64 ranks installed and our CPU can only use up to 32. We could also install 8 quad rank DIMMs and just leave 24 of our memory slots blank, or we could install only 4 octo-rank DIMMs and leave 28 memory slots blank.

This also means if we build a motherboard with only 4 physical DIMM slots per CPU, we could fill all four of our memory slots no problem with any combination of ranks and it would just work. "However we would not be able to install 32 single rank DIMMs because there is only 4 physical memory slots present. If we wanted to max out the memory on our machine, we would have to use four octal-rank DIMMs instead.

    But then along come LRDIMMs.

An LRDIMM is a newer type of memory technology from intel that allows CPUs on server platforms to address two ranks as one, meaning a dual-ranked DIMM will be "seen" as a single ranked DIMM to the CPU, and a buffer chip on the memory will handle the additional ranks to alleviate stress from the memory controller. We could also have a quad-rank LRDIMM and it would show up as a dual-rank DIMM to the CPU. A octal-rank DIMM would show up as a quad-rank DIMM. This type of memory technology only works with servers and workstations, so you can't use it on consumer motherboards.

so how much memory can you install in a Lenovo thinkstation D30?

Up to 128GB if you use non-ECC/unregistered ECC memory

Up to 512GB if you use ECC Registered RDIMMs.

Up to 1TB if you use octal-rank LRDIMMs. There, we have our answer.

And no, none of therse memory technologies can be mixed in the same system. A UDIMM cannot be mixed with an RDIMM and an RDIMM cannot be mixed with an LRDIMM.
