BPG has all the same licensing issues as HEIF/HEVC but lacks a lot of the benefits of HEIF (gallery, nondestructive editing, etc). Not to mention that BPG, while awesome, has essentially no support at all. There are no major companies backing it.

I recommend you read my posts again, because it's far more than just saving 10-20% of storage (and hardware acceleration).

    Good news!
AOMedia members will most likely make Opus the default audio codec to go along with AV1 video.
So in ~2-3 years time we might see modern and completely free video and audio codecs gain widespread adoption.
The future of image formats is very unclear though...

Are you sure? I think AMD specifically said that Polaris would support VP9, but the driver for it was not ready yet.
A quick Google and I found this statement on their site:
Since they do not make any distinction in the wording between HEVC and VP9 acceleration, I just assumed that they were both fully hardware accelerated.

Intel, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and ARM are all part of AOMedia and are working closely with everyone to make sure that the codec is suitable for hardware implementations.
The current plan is to have fully functional hardware implemented within 12 months of the format being finalized, and that's on track to be finalized in Q3 or Q4 this year. So expect to see hardware support for AV1 sometime in 2018.

That's a really bad idea, since PNG is not suitable for a lot of different things.

If I understood it right what he claimed was that Nvidia 'calibrated' the brightness, contrast, and gamma on the SDR monitor in a non-optimal way that negatively exaggerated the differences between the two.
These settings were different from the factory defaults so he assumes they did so to mislead attendees.

Since he said he checked THEIR monitor settings I'd have to assume that he did so at the presentation, you can't really check somebody else's monitor settings on your own monitor.

Not to defend Nvidia. But my guess, is that they did this so that when people comes with their non-HDR camera to film the comparison and it is viewed by our non-HDR monitors, it doesn't appear like shit.

    Like this:

Which I have the same problem when taking a picture or filming my monitor, which isn't HDR, but is wide gamut monitor (which HDR requires to show more color details).  The reason is that the camera isn't wide gamut, it is standard gamut for sRGB color space which most people have. Beside the camera, the monitor by people watch on isn't HDR either. Not to mention video codec used. In my case, I can alleviate the problem by setting my problem to sRGB mode.. but I can't go "Look how better it looks/compare", as it will look worse on camera, but in reality it looks better.

Honestly I think his video is valid, yet to be seen how accurate his claims are, but you have to keep in mind that the image you see is not an accurate representation of what he's describing.
In other words his point would have been made equally well even if he hadn't referenced the footage.

Anytime somebody compares/describes/reviews something like VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) or HDR the credibility of the review depends entirely on the reviewer's own credibility.

Same problem back in 2008-09 days when "affordable" IPS monitor that you can say is "game ready" was a thing (and not reserved for the professional space due to the high response time and cost) and you are trying to explain how good it is over TN panels. You can't show them.

That's one of the advantages of brick and mortar stores, you can see something in person that is otherwise difficult/impossible to convey.
I mean more so something like Microcenter, where they have games setup on some five computers with mice and keyboards that you just come in and play on.

I haven't been to Microcenter in a while, idk if they've updated the systems with VRR or HDR displays, it's just an example.

Obviously still flawed since the room is lit differently than your home would be but it's better than nothing.

Now, they'll put super strong glue, and you guys you'll complain that it is not easy to replace the screen, you need a heatgun and special glue and things to lift and cut the glue like on iPads.

Nintendo wants you to be close to the action... you get far and complain about some connectivity issue.
Nintendo wants you to have this bendable system for comfort... more complaining....
Nintendo makes it that it scratch your screen on your dock so that you avoid docking it, and go outside and play with the system.. you know, get fresh air.. complaining!

Jeez.. there is just no pleasing you guys. Complaining complaining complaining.. always complaining.

The more weab among us may recognize the above character's name, and for those who don't, she goes by Captain Marusa. In this scenario, she's stolen "your precious files," and the only way to retrieve them, instead of paying money to the developer of the ransomware, is to play Touhou 12 - Undefined Fantastic Object. Ok, easy enough, except you have to play the game on Lunatic mode and score 200 million points, which, if you've not played any of the games before, is incredibly hard (I never got past easy mode personally). As Ars Technica reports,
The original creator, Tvple Eraser, created the program as a joke, he had no genuine malicious intent with the program, however when he made to unfortunate decision to share the program's source code, that's when it became an issue. Tvple has since apologized on Twitter for releasing the program, and has released a second program designed to force the program to believe you've already reached the high score. Still, the issue remains, while Tvple has tried to do right, I don't doubt that modified versions exist and will continue to spread.

A new, "cut" version of the program has replaced the source code on Github since it has exploded, just to continue to show off the joke for those who are interested in the program, and Tvple has promised not to release anything malicious again.

    It's just a prank, bro.

They meant internet access, maybe even computers, but they don't know it.

No one needs an iPhone. Almost no one needs a smartphone. Many/most need or at least would substantially benefit from internet access and some form of computer or another.
They just confuse what they do with their phone with what needs to be done with a smartphone, as if there was no choice. The truth is, I could not have one (I actually didn't for a while, after the first one) and it wouldn't have any impact on my life, as computers at work and at home take care of any IT/internet need I may have. You may "need" your smartphone if that's your only computer just as much as you could "need" your netbook if that was your only computer. Or as you could need access to the library's or the school's computers if that was your only way to reach the internet.
At some level, they talk like the iPhone invented the internet or are the first thing to replace the abacus...

What do those results, the Cinebench score for instance, mean?
Cinebench is supposed to give you an idea of how well your hardware will perform in rendering workloads; what if Ryzen is (somehow) tuned to perform better in Cinebench than it would in a normal rendering workload though?

@Sampsy already addressed this earlier in this thread.
But I'm sure you'd ( @SamStrecker) argue that as anybody could achieve the same result with their VW that it's fine the emissions test results weren't representing the actual amount of exhaust being released into the environment.

We don't know what these settings actually do, so this is a bit sensationalistic, but anyone saying that this doesn't matter is delusional.
