mvitkun got a reaction from jiyeon in What does VRM (Phases) affect and how many phases do we need?
with phases there are two things that matter
    -quality
    -quantity

you could have 100 phase power delivery, but if they are shotty (insert other vowel if you need to) you might not be able to overclock very well anyway.

but if you have a quality single phase power deilvery you may still be unable to achieve good overclocks anyway due to limited power delivery.

8 phase and above is good for overclocking, provided that it's good quality vrms and that they have decent cooling on the motherboard.

when you get past say 16 phase I'd begin to question if the VRM's are actually good quality or if they are slapping as many as they can onto the motherboard (yes there are ones that have a large quantity and great quality)

Voltage Regulator Modules transfer the power while also converting the 12V (or whatever) to what the cpu/gpu needs (around 1v).
the more high quality phases you have the more you can raise the voltage without needing to worry about instability on the motherboards side.

so if you want 4.8ghz+ (3770K) or 5ghz+ (8350) it will help immensely to have a good amount of quality VRM's.

mvitkun got a reaction from BuckGup in 1080p Netflix on Windows 7 and Linux
EDIT: Apparently after he released it someone else made an addon for Firefox that does the same thing.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/force-1080p-netflix/
    https://github.com/vladikoff/netflix-1080p-firefox

Also relevant reddit thread from a month ago when he released it.
    https://np.reddit.com/r/netflix/comments/7wrr78/i_made_a_chrome_extension_to_force_netflix_to/
    -----------

As you may or may not know watching Netflix on Windows 7 or Linux has meant that no matter what you do you're limited to 720p.
Even on Windows 8/10 you must use IE, Edge, or the Netflix app to stream at resolutions greater than 720p. If you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or any other browser then you're stuck at 720p.
And for macOS, AFAIK, you can only get 1080p on Safari.

In fact, the only platform where you can watch 1080p Netflix on Chrome is ChromeOS as it has the DRM required by Netflix.

Fortunately someone has found a way to exploit this to enable 1080p streaming in Chrome (or chromium based browsers) on any platform.
I've tried it on Windows 7 and Ubuntu but seeing as it's enabled through a chrome extension I assume that it'll work on any OS.

Below are links to the chrome extension and to the source code on github.
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/netflix-1080p/cankofcoohmbhfpcemhmaaeennfbnmgp
    https://github.com/truedread/netflix-1080p

You can press ctrl+shift+alt+D to check what bitrate and resolution it's streaming at or ctrl+shift+alt+S to manually select bitrate.
These shortcuts don't seem to be universal as ctrl+shift+alt+D didn't seem to work on Ubuntu so...yeah.

As is usually the case with third party tools, use it at your own risk.

Here's the explanation of how it works copy and pasted from the readme on github.

Grrrreaaat now Windows 10 will dictate what I can and cannot run! More reason I want to return to Windows XP.

What happens if I like the program that it wants to remove?
Personally, I enjoy PC Repire Pro Hunter XP Optimizer. I scan, it tells me all the viruses and issues I haves with my PC, I pay the 300 or something dollar after each scan, and it fixes my problem. I don't need to take my computer to GeekSquad and be told by these money grabbing scammers "Oh sir, we need to re-install everything, your computer takes 5h to boot, and one of the fan is barely spinning on your UCP or whatever, and bla bla bla". Gaawdd....it just never ends with them.

My computer works, the software works, what I do is correct, clearly, and I enjoy the best possible computer experience.
Now, they'll start removing programs, like they removed IE, and now I can't enjoy my tool bars anymore.

I think even Denuvo themselves push this as "It will get cracked but it will get you through the release timeframe" which considering how their model is to sell as much as they can as early as they can, publishers find useful.

    It's 15 in Denmark.

Actually, this kind of highlights how fucked up the justice system is.
Filming themselves having sex and then spreading it around was a terrible idea, and the people continuing to spread it are stupid. But come on... Are we really going to ruin the lives of 15 year olds just because they shared a video? Imagine being a registered sex offender and a pedophile as 15, because you shared a video of your classmates fucking.

I understand why the laws are the way they are, but I think it's messed up that a 40 year old can have sex with a 15 year old and it's totally fine in the eyes of the law, but two 15 years olds having a video of themselves fucking counts as possessing/producing child porn.
"Go ahead and have as much sex as you want. Just don't film or photograph it because if you do you'll become a registered sex offender!".
I can't think of any other law where doing the act itself is OK, but possessing images or video of it is considered one of the most serious crimes you can commit.

I hope the judge takes these things into consideration and gives a mild punishment, if any.
Doing what the law specifies would essentially result in 1000+ people having their entire lives ruined by falling behind education wise, getting a very poor social life, struggling to find jobs, and a long list of other issues.

mvitkun reacted to LAwLz in Activision Blizzard adds 312 new skins to Overwatch to pay for e-Sports by milking customers using Micro-transactions
Oh no, a developer adds cosmetic items to a game which you can either get from playing the game or pay for the ones you want! and not just that, if you go with the latter, 50% of the money goes towards esport teams instead of the developers!

What a terrible thing to do!

    /sarcasm

    Edit:
Actually, I think these are really good news. I think this is a great example of how to do lootboxes properly.
    1) Release the game at full price.
    2) Constantly release patches which adds new characters, tweak things, new maps etc, for free.
    3) Have cosmetic things which you can either get from lootboxes (which you earn by simply playing the game), or by buying specific skins with money.
    4) Give some of the money you earn from lootboxes (50% is a big chunk) to the esport teams to support them.

On top of that, you can get one free skin of your choice for free.

    I see this as a win-win-win situation.
Players gets a great game with gets additional content for free. On top of that you never feel like you lost because someone had spent more money than you. Blizzard wins by having a reliable stream of revenue to fund future content with. eSports wins by getting funded by the developers themselves. Good job Blizzard!

All of the various traits I've seen about this remind me of this:

Which basically is the same issue: you can fool System Manager into executing code that gives you privileged access. It was also caused by a hardware design flaw.

And while it's nice to know AMD isn't affected by the particular exploit in the OP, you'd still be a fool to trust them any better than Intel when none of their security features are open for independent auditing.

mvitkun reacted to DeScruff in Apple apologizes over battery fisasco, will offer $29 battery replacements for 1 year
Eventually no amount of slowing it down will stop it from shutting off if there is a battery issue.  Just slowing down is delaying the inevitable, but not letting the person know the inevitable is coming. That emergency situation where the phone turns off randomly can still happen, though its just more likely the user would have replaced their phone before it gets to that point due to it feeling sluggish.
I'd argue if you want the device it's self to last longer, you let the person know something is wrong with it as you slow it down.

If the phone gets slower over a long time, the user might not even notice till they see how fast their friends iPhone is.
And what are they going to think? "Oh must be my battery must be dying" or "Oh wow the new iPhone is fast, I should upgrade".
    - Ever hear the whole throw a frog in boiling water, and it will jump right out, but if you slowly boil the water it's in, it won't even notice?

mvitkun reacted to leadeater in Apple face 2 class action suits in USA over slowing down iPhones
The details are very important when you're not told about it. Nothing is wrong with the design and technical decision here but people need to be told so. If you're buying a new phone because your current one is extremely slow compared to when you brought it and all that is required is a $80 battery replacement and not a $500-$1200 new phone more people would take the $80 option if they knew for sure it would give them back the full performance and excellent device usage time again.

Many will still buy the new phone anyway but it's better to have an informed buying decision rather than an uninformed decision.

Most people assume their phone is slower due to newer iOS versions, some people actually get very annoyed at that and purposefully not update the phone unless forced to. Now they are being told it probably has little to do with iOS and more to do with their battery, thanks for the multi year delayed information so helpful.

But in the official terms and conditions they say

So each grand prize is 1,000 EVGA Bucks.......and 1,000 EVGA Bucks = 1,000 in your local currency......and yet somehow 1,000 in your local currency also equals 1.00 USD?

mvitkun reacted to Rupe in UK Gambling Commission says children as young as 11 are getting into skin gambling
I think the biggest reason why it's dangerous is that you can get some cheap skins for just playing the game and not spending a penny. This can then act as a gateway where suddenly the kid decides they quite liked gambling their meagre inventory. Perhaps they ask their parents for steam gift cards for birthdays/christmas so they can continue to gamble skins. This addiction can eventiually lead to more sinisters outcomes such as kids taking their parents credit cards.
But the point is to get started not a penny needs to be spent, and their is a culture inside of CSGO when you hear people talk almost like its a status symbol to have a really good inventory of skins which for young kids can be a serious draw
