It's just a DRM thing.

AFAIK they don't have as high a degree of support for the Widevine DRM or something along those lines; in other words, they're less secure.

As you may or may not know watching Netflix on Windows 7 or Linux has meant that no matter what you do you're limited to 720p.

Even on Windows 8/10 you must use IE, Edge, or the Netflix app to stream at resolutions greater than 720p. If you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or any other browser then you're stuck at 720p.

And for macOS, AFAIK, you can only get 1080p on Safari.

In fact, the only platform where you can watch 1080p Netflix on Chrome is ChromeOS as it has the DRM required by Netflix.

Fortunately someone has found a way to exploit this to enable 1080p streaming in Chrome (or chromium based browsers) on any platform.

I've tried it on Windows 7 and Ubuntu but seeing as it's enabled through a chrome extension I assume that it'll work on any OS.

You can press ctrl+shift+alt+D to check what bitrate and resolution it's streaming at or ctrl+shift+alt+S to manually select bitrate.

These shortcuts don't seem to be universal as ctrl+shift+alt+D didn't seem to work on Ubuntu so...yeah.

As is usually the case with third party tools, use it at your own risk.

What it is doing is testing your User-agent for the "CrOS" string anywhere in it. If the search returns true, it appends the 1080p profile to the profile playback array (what this line a && this.oo.push(x.V.TH); is doing). If it returns false, it does nothing. The playback profile array is set up like so: this.oo = [x.V.vA, x.V.wA];, x.V.vA is the SD profile and x.V.wA is the 720p profile.

 

After reading this you think the easy solution would be to just change the User-agent to make it contain the string "CrOS" right? Not that simple. ChromeOS apparently has a different DRM implementation than chrome, even though both use Widevine. I could never get it to work when I tried, Netflix always threw license errors. The next easiest thing to do is just delete the conditional to append 1080p and just make the 1080p profile apart of the regular profiles (this.oo = [x.V.vA, x.V.wA]; -> this.oo = [x.V.vA, x.V.wA, x.V.TH];). This works perfectly.

 

All the Chrome extension has to do is redirect all requests to Netflix's playercore to the modified one it has in the root directory. That's it. A two line modification.

I know that personally the first time I'd heard of TWiT was when Ryan Shrout from PCPER mentioned that he'd be in a TWiT podcast called This Week in Computer Hardware, initially I'd thought it'd be on Twitch and that I'd simply misheard him or something since that's what PCPER streams their podcast on.......and, you know, since Twitch is one of the most well known streaming platforms.

I guess they could've used Periscope to stream from Twitter if they'd really wanted to.......but why? Nobody does podcasts on Periscope. It's mostly just IRL streams.

I think a more appropriate comparison would be if Windows, macOS, and/or Linux monitored the rails of your power supply and once they noted that the rails dipped below a certain range your computer would ping a server which would then send out some sort of mandatory firmware update (or something) provided by Intel, Nvidia, and AMD which would lower your CPU and GPU base and boost frequencies to a level that was sustainable without BSOD.

You would receive no notification of this nor would there would be any way to undo this other than replacing your power supply....which you would have no reason to believe you need to do since you've received no notification from your OS and have had no stability issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong, there are multiple different ED242QR models, I think the wi is the 75hz one while Abidpx is the 144hz.

Acer's own site is less than clear on this, you can find two different models of the ED242QR but none with the wi suffix.

They do deceive you, it's 25fps.  

I'm guessing they just used some motion blur/interpolation to make it appear smoother.

Yeah, VLC is awesome; other players still do stuff better at times but VLC is more of a no nonsense one-stop shop than anything I've seen thus far.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my solution only works with up to 720p files, beyond that youtube stores audio and video separately; I also listed a secondary solution which uses VLC's ability to play two files synchronously to overcome that.

I'm not glad because on YouTube I hate videos in 60fps especially videos that have no reason to be in 60fps, so I use a plug-in to force flash and thus enabling 30fps for options higher than 480.

Just use this site to find all the versions of the video, copy the desired url, open VLC player, media -> open network stream, paste the url, play.  

This works up to 720p, beyond that youtube stores audio and video separately so you'll have to do this:  

copy the desired video and audio urls, open VLC player, media -> open network stream, paste the video url, show more options, play another media synchronously, paste the audio url, hit play.

EDIT:Just wanted to note that the MP4 stream takes longer to load than the webm stream.

You could also use youtube-dl

Yeah I don't expect to see a filter for it until it becomes much more widely adopted, assuming that it ever does.

EDIT: I checked their news page and apparently there's one etailer that has a page with all the power supplies they carry which Cybenetics have tested.

Oh and I just checked the rest of the companies on their database, Silverstone displays it as well but it seems that nobody else does.

By use do you mean send their power supplies to Cybenetics for certification, use the certification on their marketing material, or something else?

They currently have 79 power supplies on their efficiency database and 76 on their noise level database, mostly from relevant power supply vendors.

I'm not sure how many of them actually advertise the certification, most of them don't seem to have updated their product pages to include it but Seasonic displays it prominently alongside the 80+ Titanium certification.
