I made a ridiculous offer on eBay and this happened... I'm now the proud owner of the following HP DL380 G6.

    CPU: 2 x Quad Xeon X5570 2.93 GHz
    Mem: 48GB
    RAID: P410i + BBWC
    HDD: 6 x 300GB 15K SAS
    PSU: 2 x 750W

I even managed to score the cabinet rails.

What do I do with it?!

Up to now, I've installed ESXi and whipped up a Server 2012 instance. Started a small Minecraft server for myself to play around in at work, home, wherever. I thought about replicating our work's server offsite. Any suggestions welcome!

That reminds me of when I was about 10 and I literally pulled the CPU out of the socket (with the lockdown bar still engaged) while removing the cooler and bent every. single. pin. Good times.

Andrew_C reacted to GoodBytes in The PirateBay uses website visitors as miners without them knowing. 'causes 100% CPU spikes on users
Thanks to JavaScript (not to be confused with the programming language: Java), The Pirate Bay website has put code in their site which turns visitor computers as a mining machine for a crypto concurrency without the user knowing. The visitors of the site are completely unaware of the activity that their web browser is doing. The website says nothing. Only if you open the Task Manager you will notice that your CPU is spiking to really high load, reaching 100% (or you'll notice your system act slow and is less responsive if you know your system well).

The only way to disable this, is to disable JavaScript from your web browser. However, this will disable some features on the website, and affect all other websites you go to as JavaScript is used a lot in the modern web of today. Web browsers may have an add-on to disable JavaScript on a specific website, so you may want to look into that instead.

Do you support websites mining on your system while you visit them to make money off you as an alternative to advertisement or added to advertisement to make additional revenue?

Ta! But I'm in the UK.. I've rebuilt an SR20 before, I'll probably end up pulling the engine in the next week or two - rebuild over the weekend or something.

Loved the video, Dennis needs to be in more videos - pro actor! I guess I still don't get the point of the hardware though. You're going to be carrying around a phone with Google translate anyway... so why not just use that? Seems clunky.

So after working a bit on this thing over the week i've managed to build something that I think is pretty nice for a computer that was going to be thrown away.

I have inverted the motherboard tray so now the PSU sits on the bottom and the pci expansion slots are on the top, the rear I/O panel has also been cut down to be able to fit standard I/O plates. I also modified the orginal power button an LED's so they can be plugged into a normal mobo (This one used a proprietary connector) And obviously painted the whole thing, the interior and the rear I/O piece's are in satin black, and the exterior is in matte black with the front bezel in red.

I really like VMware ESXi, it is very simple to manage via the vSphere client. You can load ISO's directly from your local hard drive to the server and you can use remote console into the host VM very easily. I know this sounds like a VMware ad but I just really like ESXi. Oh yea it's free too!

Andrew_C reacted to Uber_Beluga in Need 'sa' password MSSQL 2012
You mentioned you just wanted to move the database to a new server... Recovering SA passwords is a real pain that it sounds like you can avoid.

I would recommend looking through the SQL server installation directory and grabbing the yourdatabasename.mdf and yourdatabasename.ldf files.
The MDF is the actual database, and the LDF is the transaction log which oddly enough you need.

Install SQL onto your new server and through the new database wizard you can select those two files to create the database exactly as it was before.
It sounds a bit hacky, but it works. I've done it several times for valuable clients who can't keep track of passwords.

Buy an old second hand server off eBay. I got a lovely DL380 G6 for peanuts.

It'll have the RAID controller (mmm lovely RAID 10 in there).
You can run ESXi or Hyper-V.
Lots of ECC memory for next to nothing.
You might even snag dual PSU for redundancy.

Wouldn't you think that the card simply contained an ID number? Which when read would identify the account and how much cash is available on a central DB?

the Google guy who broke the news that USB type C cables can be out of spec, even from OEMs, is back with a new story
this time not a pleasant one:
Surtech’s 3M USB A-to-C cable he was reviewing managed to "destroy" three of his devices: 2015 Chromebook Pixel and two USB PD analyzers
open your eye before buying 3rd party USB cables
