By this logic then you should have no problem with companies like Microsoft, Apple and Google becoming monopolies and absorbing every other tech company out there giving you less choice and giving them full control. Because that's what you'll end up with if you just let bussiness run how they see fit, the biggest ones will become monopolies and absorb everything else around them to maintain their leadership. While definitely not perfect, regulation of business is definitely needed in many cases. At the end of the day giving the consumer more choice and protection isn't bad.

the fact Linux types believe it's acceptable for the option to delete your desktop exists at the end of an everyday app install is exactly why you're staying in 1-3%
judging from my past experiences with open-source devs, I guarantee this got brought up earlier. it took a video from a big channel and relentless mocking to get it changed. hilarious

multifrag reacted to YoungBlade in UK Home Secretary wants to ban anonymous social media accounts, is determined to bring "big changes"
Apart from the fact that it's actually impossible to enforce this, it would also seem pretty pointless. The only people on the Internet who use anonymity that you need to fear are criminals, and criminals don't care about the law, so they'll just find ways to circumvent it. It's the same problem with banning encryption: because open source encryption algorithms exist, any criminals who want to use encryption will just use it.

Additionally, anonymity on the Internet can also be used for good. To keep away from political things where this truly matters, but that isn't allowed to be discussed on the forum, let me use a benign example to get the point across: someone wants to get career advice about possibly leaving their job, but don't want their boss to know that they've sought such advice, so they post anonymously to a site like reddit. If their boss knows their usual online handles, and those handles are linked to their identity, then it would be impossible to hide this from their boss.

The result is that only good people end up being hurt by a law like this.

Not the tin foil hat rubbish again. He's been spouting that for a while, which is ignorance at best, malicious at worst.

If we assume for now that a new product range is being made ready, it is normal to cut back production of the outgoing product to shift resource to the new product. It does not mean a drop in production overall. Now, if they want more launch day stock, then it would imply not supplying the older product a bit earlier to stock up on the new product.

We could further speculate that nvidia might do a product refresh timed to match Intel's Arc launch. It feels a little short for a 40 series, and a little late for a Super refresh though.

I'd further guess this might only apply to certain models, and not across the whole range.

Have y'all heard of "i don't care about cookies"? It's a browser extension that does exactly what most people would want to do anyways: Reject all non-essentials. Plus it gets rid of the cookie consent popups. Then also enable cookie auto-deleting when closing your browser (Edge and Firefox have this feature afaik, not sure about other browsers) and you can also be free of all the hassle revolving around cookies.

This is a clear example of why a lot of people still prefer physical media, buy consoles with disc-drives or CDs instead of paying for streaming. Stuff like this.
Sure what Apple did was (currently) within their rights... But it sure does leave a sour taste in your mouth, doesn't it?

Music I liked disappeared from Spotify. I know Apple themselves removed movies people bought from their account in the past. There's a reason I stopped paying subscriptions and moved to hosting my own Plex server.

I think there needs to a refactoring of ownership laws concerning digital content. Currently basically all of it is a "license to use", not an actual ownership. And while some licenses might be non-revocable, access to the content certainly is, and keeps being dependent on the service that provides them. And current Copyright laws and DRM can certainly get part of the blame.

I think Apple is actually currently being sued about their wording about "purchasing" movies on iTunes, when it was actually an "extended renter's agreement".

Asus barely sells any phones compared to Apple or other corporation, you can't expect massive outrage for a product that doesn't really sell, frankly enough, I've never seen anyone yet, before or during the pandemic to own any kind of gaming phone. Regardless Louis complains about Apple because that's the industry that he works in, he repairs Apple devices and shares with people the issues he sees in them. And whenever he has an issue with a different device that isn't made by Apple he points it out and shows the issue as well, he's done this for example with thinkpads, or with Samsung when they followed in Apple's foot steps and started serializing some parts in some of their devices(I think the A51).

Additionally he also has praised Apple devices numerous times, and mentions things Apple has done right with their devices. Most of the things he does mention and criticize related to Apple is their bad practices, and common issues present in some of their devices that they have refused to release repair programme for.  He doesn't often criticize other devices because he doesn't have first hand experience with them.

He is very aware of this and has experienced it himself. What Louis wants to do is a direct ballot initiative which basically goes past all the politicians and goes straight to the citizens of the state to vote on whether to pass the bill or not. At which point no amount misinformation from paid lobbyists will help.

Gabe Newell (Valve founder) has partnered with Rocket Lab to include a 5 inch titanium replica of the gnome on the Electron rocket launching from New Zealand on Thursday. "Gnome Chompski" was originally featured in Half Life 2: Episode 2 where players could get an achievement by carrying him through the game and then placing him inside a rocket. In addition, Gabe has pledged to donate 1 dollar for every viewer of the launch to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the New Zealand Starship Children's Hospital.

As a huge half life fan I think this is really cool, and I'll probably watch the launch to contribute towards that donation. I'm also glad that gnome's gonna burn up in the atmosphere, I'll take that as payback for having to drag him through the car segment of episode 2.

multifrag reacted to FaxedForward in AMD RX 6800XT AIB synthetic benchmarks: Pure rasterized faster than RTX 3080, RT on par with RTX 2080 Ti
I personally disagree. DLSS' biggest limitation is that it's not universally supported and Papa Nvidia has to bless your game with AI training to enable it. It's not like an API where the developers can just choose to incorporate it at will. There are less than 20 games that currently support it and only about 25 more with future support announced.

I think it would be fair if it was universally available, but Nvidia gets to cherry pick the titles it supports with AI training. So to compare only DLSS-enabled titles and say the 3080 is the best card because it's faster in ~50 out of thousands of PC titles is kind of silly. Pure raster vs pure raster is an objective standard.

This is the same thing we saw with S3 and the MeTaL API 20 years ago, it blew the doors off 3dfx/ATi/Nvidia in the small number of titles where it was supported but was objectively inferior elsewhere. Times have changed in a lot of ways but back then consistent performance with no tricks ultimately won out.

multifrag reacted to fanatiXalpha in Workaround boosts Ryzen Performance for Intel MKL
I looked around and didn't find a posting of this news topic on your forum so I open one up myself.
If there is already a topic/thread here to the same story: my apologies!

So a user on reddit  found a workaround to uplift/boost the performance of AMD CPUs in applications that use the Intel Math Kernel Library.
The problem with lower performance on AMD CPUs has existed for about 10 years and is also known for that long.
The cause was that the library checked in the beginning with which Vendor-ID the CPU responded, which resulted for an AMD CPU in the fallback mode for the instruction set to normal SSE.
Despite the fact that Ryzen CPUs from AMD and even older CPUs from AMD support other instruction sets like AVX that are much faster.

The workaround forces the library to run in AVX2 mode, no matter if the CPU is Intel or not.
Performance gains vary from CPU-Gen to CPU-Gen, but in certain scenarios there is an uplift of 250% or more.
Zen 2 does gain more than Zen1(+) for example.

Hope this is will be covered in techlinked or the wan show...
